I was a patron of Level Up Games for years. Had a situation after a modern game where an employee stated the pronouns of an individual in a not very polite manner (happened a few times before but with people I didn't even know the names of, let alone their pronouns). The person who had the pronouns never said anything and did not speak during this exchange.
I stated politely that I would not use preferred pronouns, but would instead refer to the person solely by their name. That was not accepted and the employee stated that I was no longer welcome at the store and asked to leave.
I called the owners to see if that was store policy, WOTC policy, or the employee going off on their own. They stated it was not their official policy and that they would look into it.
After a week, I called them for a follow up and they stated that I would not be banned, but I am not allowed to play modern on mondays (the only day I could make it). They would not explain their reasoning further.
They will require you to use compelled speech if you are to participate in their events (not saying something mean, but forcing you to say something that is opposed to your moral and religious beliefs).
The argument is that it can make someone feel uncomfortable or unaccepted when you are just there to play a card game, not enforce someone's ideology (why is this even brought up?) Do they not consider that forcing people to speak in a non-normal way and bringing up politics in those kinds of environments can make those who don't hold those same ideological beliefs very uncomfortable and unaccepted? For myself and many normal / healthy individuals - this is seen as very hypocritical.
TLDR: if you want to bring up politics and enforce an ideology in a gaming store / public space, do not expect over 50% of the population to put up with it for very long and expect them to continue to patronize your stores.
I am very disappointed in the response from the employee and the owners of the establishment.
