I had a wonderful stay at L'Hotel In Pietra. The hotel is located in the heart of the Sassi, making it incredibly cozy and charming. The room was perfect for a solo traveler, providing a comfortable retreat after a day of exploring. The location is perfect—easy to walk to nearby restaurants. Breakfast was delightful, with a good selection of fresh pastries, fruits, and hot options. Matera is one of the best places I have visited! I highly recommend this hotel for a cozy and convenient stay in Matera!

What an awesome place! Cave room experience in Matera but what struck me as exceptional was the staff. Room was very cool. We booked directly from hotel. There were 3 of us so in Europe that means 3 person rooms are a bit limited driving up the cost a bit. But it’s centrally located. Gotta haul your bags cause the stairs and cobblestone will break your wheels but the hotel does have helpers if you need. They helped us with a transportation dilemma we had and diligently found a solution. Shoutout to Lucia and Francesco. Also found us a less costly ride to our destination as long as we paid in cash. The woman who served in a breakfast was superb. Sweet and very attentative. Breakfast was really ample and tasty with hot fresh breads, pastries and even some scrambled eggs. Bravo! Highly recommend.

This was a unique, historic, and fantastic hotel!! It is in a great location, not just in terms of getting around the city, but also since it is a short 2 min walk (up or down steps) to get a taxi. We had a room with a terrace overlooking the city. The view was so wonderful we spent much of our time there, but the room itself was spacious and comfortable. Even if you don’t get a room with a terrace, there is a shared terrace also with a great view. The staff was friendly and helpful in every way possible. The breakfast had a nice variety of sweet and savory. It was a great value for an amazing experience. I would love to stay here again and would recommend it to anyone visiting Matera.

We just came back from a fantastic trip to this lovely L‘Hotel in Pietra located in the scenic Sassi of Matera.|This hotel and the City of Matera are truly hidden gems and should be on your Italy-Must-Visit list, especially if you already have seen the Azzuro-Evergreens Rome, Venice, Florence and/or Capri.|Still this city remains quite undiscovered even James Bond has been to Matera recently.|We did not see many tourists in November but believe this time of year ist perfect to come here.|The L‘Hotel in Pietra is a very „boutique“ hotel and only consists of a number (10?) of rooms and suites.|We had the „Sauna“ suite which was truly spacious but changed to the „Terrace“ Suite after one night because we prefered to rather sit outside enjoing the warm autumn sun as much as possible.|Again, each suite speaks for itself and I believe it would be difficult to find something similar and unique in Matera even comparing the upscale hotels like Gattini, Sextantio or St. Angelo.|The staff was very friendly and helpful, especially Lucia.|Breakfast is improvable as it gives more of a typical Italo Cornetto/ Caffe impression than a rich (no sausages, no fresh egg specialities) and healthy (no cereals, no fruits, no fresh juices) Continental European Style.|However based on our research this might still be the best choice for your Matera Dream Holiday Trip. This hotel was well designed, well run, and get classy. My room was incredibly small (one if the smallest I've ever stayed in), but very lovely and for one person was ok. The hotel proper is very nicely decorated, very well situated in the town (reasonably accessible from the town above or piazza below because most of the town is only reachable on foot), with great views of the town and exudes a wonderful sense of tranquility. The staff was always pleasant and helpful. There were some minor issues, but nothing that negatively affected the overall experience.

Stayed in this hotel/cave for one night and had an amazing experience. We had a room which I think was called the SPA-room (or something similar) and it was amazing. As probably all of the rooms, hey are "carved" into the mountain, and this consisted of two floors. One for the bedroom and bathroom, and the lower floor which was pretty much an in-house spa with hot tub and sauna. It even had an additional small cave, which was a great hit with our son. ||Naturally being surrounded by stone means that the room got a bit humid, so it was important to keep windows open as much as possible. Also this naturally affected the wifi-signal, but it worked by the beds. Note that if you come with a car it's a bit of a walk, so I would not go to the hotel with heavy luggage. Take what you need, as there are lots of stairs and cobblestone streets. Breakfast was just ok, but the rooms (and the town) is the star here!||Would recommend and could definitely stay again!

Incredible hotel located in Sassi Borasino. It used to be an old Basilica. Our room was a cave room but very well lit and the ambiance was excellent. Would recommend it for any one that hasn’t difficulty going up and down stairs. Breakfast was ok and parking was provided close by at a reasonable cost.

This boutique cave hotel was the cherry on gelato for our 3 week European trip! Superb location within the Sassi with the most incredible views of city! We stayed in one of the most unique suites anywhere in Matera, Suite 1003, that was the former bell tower in this ancient 13th century cave monastery. With a four-poster bed it made for a romantic getaway. There’s a stone staircase that leads to the upper floor where the jewel in the crown of the room awaits you: a large Jacuzzi. The private terrace was the ideal place to relax while sipping an aperitif and enjoying magnificent views of the Sassi!

Staying in Hotel In Pietra is definitely a once in a lifetime experience, we had the pleasure of staying one night in our trip in Italy's mezzogiorno. Finding the hotel can be a bit of a trip, there are many stairs and you have to park your car around 300 meters away, which wasn't too bad. All hotels in the sassi (caves) are like this but it is best to be aware. The view from this hotel is nothing short of a dream. Actually I was in a dream like state after staying here, it's almost unbelievably beautiful. Our room was quite small, a tiny entryway carved into the stone, very nice and curated, there is even music infused throughout. We needed stairs to get up to the bed, which I loved though going to the bathroom in the middle of the might was a little daunting. This is all overshadowed by the amazing view of what was once a dead city after the resettlement in the 50's by the Italian government. I would however recommend one of the bigger rooms as ours was a little claustrophobic, there are nine rooms in total and it is way worth it to book a large 'cave.' Keep in mind that it can be quite humid as you are in an actual cave, they control it as best they can but it is worth noting. The hotel is actually part of an ancient church, you see remnants inside the main room (where you also have breakfast). The service is impeccable, Roberto the owner was so friendly and helpful, we felt like they go above and beyond for their guests. Breakfast was nice, very European with various cakes and sweets ( there was the most incredible chocolate and orange cake when we were there) and good-quality coffee. All in all, I highly recommend this as a true experience in Matera's sassi, you will go camera crazy like I did and this place blends comfort with extreme.

I was so so excited about staying in a cave hotel. This hotel did not disappoint us. We stayed in a beautiful two floor suite. Storage space is excellent. There was a living room area upstairs with a window and the bedroom and bathroom were downstairs. The staff and owner (Roberto) were extremely accommodating and made our stay a great experience. Roberto made an appointment for us to take a guided tour of Matera with Nadia. I definitely recommend the tour. Anyone considering booking a reservation for ANY cave hotel in Matera (which is the only place you can stay in the Sassi area of Matera) should be aware that moisture and some mildew cannot be avoided. This hotel does a great job of controlling the moisture as much as possible. Other cave businesses we visited had much more moisture and mildew. Our room was spotless. The shower was a little unpredictable with water ranging from cold to hot. I am not complaining about that though, since this is an ancient cave hotel. Another thing to be aware of is that one must climb 89 rock stairs (even more steps) to reach the hotel. Once again, that is true of almost any hotel in the Sassi area. The Sassi area is not the place to stay for someone who has trouble climbing stairs at all. It is impossible to say how many stairs we climbed in 3 days, but every stair led us to an amazing experience.
