On the Grid : Li-Lac Chocolates

"Li-Lac Chocolates is Manhattan’s oldest chocolate house. In business since 1923, they have a selection of more than 140 chocolates. Every chocolate is handmade in New York in Industry City. I personally recommend their 72% chocolate bar. It’s a good blend of sweet, smooth, and rich goodness. Fun fact: their life-size heel mold is as old as the store itself." - Alisha Austin

Google
Nice chocolate shop. Broken dark chocolate bark was very good, rich flavor and creamy. Salted dark chocolate caramel was also very good. Light caramel flavor. Rasberry cream had nice flavor but was not very creamy. Butter crunch was delicious. Reminiscent of candy from years ago. Definitely worth a visit.

Google
Excellent chocolate and very kind service. This was an unexpected find as we walked Chelsea Market. A very fun collection of options that were very well prepared. My favorite was the Smore. Lots to enjoy here and great gift options.

Google
I came across them while roaming inside the Chelsea market. We bought two small pieces- one with hazelnut, and another with dark chocolate mousse. To be honest, both of them were pretty mediocre. I bought two small gift boxes. The boxes look very pretty, and quite expensive too. However, inside I found only four truffles and other square ones. The square ones were too sweet and very mediocre. Howe er, the truffles were good.

Wonderful chocolate and wonderful staff. This guy with a mustache and beard with a yankees hat was very kind to us. Always love coming here.

Lilac and the people who work here have always been amazing. I grew up in New York, I grew up with lilac, I remember when you had the storefront on Christopher Street. And though you’ve got two different store fronts now you still handmade here. And you hire the best people. I am at Chelsea market now and your employees here are awesome. thank you for always being the best

Google
I just purchased some chocolates from here a week ago. I loved the dark chocolate mousse roll and the pecan chew! I went back after walking around and purchased a few more to take with me. I got the milk chocolate mousse roll, peanut butter cup, and the dark chocolate coconut roll/log. I liked the dark chocolate mousse roll the best. I didn't taste a strong peanut butter flavor with the cup, but of course it was still tasty! I also liked the dark chocolate coconut log. The prices are a bit more, but they are in a very touristy area, so that isn't surprising.

Yelp
Very good selection of chocolate, unique flavors, good for personal enjoyment and gifts. Even though there is a lot of places to get chocolate in New York, lilac is New York's oldest.

Yelp
Li- lac Chocolates has been in business for 100 years, so that alone is quite impressive. This location is located inside the Chelsea Market closer to 9th Avenue. I had the pleasure of chatting about the chocolates with a super knowledgeable employee who answered my numerous questions. The chocolates are expensive but the quality is definitely worth it.

Yelp
David was super nice, super helpful and super knowledgeable. I tried the Rasberry Patties, it was amazing!

Yelp
Great chocolates and always delious! It's tough to give this place a bad review since they always seem to deliver. I will say, come ready to wait on line as you can be waiting for 15+ minutes. They had a special with Archehouse and gave a free chocolate bar. Yummm

Yelp
It was my first time walking around Chelsea Market, and as soon as I saw a chocolatier I had to make a pit stop. I never heard of Li-lac Chocolates, so I was excited to try some place new. I had most the expensive milk chocolate covered s'more, which was almost $10 for one square. As expensive as it was, I have to admit that it was pretty damn good. Great milk chocolate, light and airy marshmallow, and soft Graham cracker crust. The quality of the chocolate and overall tastiness of the s'more bar matched the price. It was by far one of the best I've ever had. I would certainly get it again in a heartbeat.

Yelp
In the hustle and bustle of Chelsea Market, it would have been easy for the employees to get frustrated with me- I didn't have an exact idea of what I was looking for, and it was so loud that I was practically shouting across the chocolate counter. But the employee who helped me, David, was absolutely phenomenal: friendly, incredibly knowledgeable, and patient as I explained what I needed. I cannot wait to give my chocoholic dad his birthday gift now! Thank you David!!

Yelp
Right next to the popular very fresh noodles is this small chocolate stall! I got the orange slice dipped in chocolate. It was surprisingly very good. The orange was candied, sweet with a slight bitterness from the rind, and was very gummy and chewy. I loved how it contrasted the sweet (but not sickeningly sweet) chocolate. It was a great piece of dessert that was overall balanced. This place is really expensive though. 3 orange slices costed over $11.

Yelp
Stopped by here to grab some dark chocolate to take back with me to the hotel. While nothing special, it reminded me of the candy stores in the past selling holiday themed chocolates and candies. Not bad but don't come here if you only like high quality chocolates.

Yelp
I got the Dark Chocolate Smore (about $6) today which was too sweet but good but it made my stomach hurt. I do like this place though. The size of the smore was pretty big, the marshmallow was obviously sweet & chewy. The chocolate itself was too sweet.

Yelp
After dinner sweet summons chocolate. This location sits inside Chelsea Market. Upon scanning the many chocolate treats and sweets on display, I found my childhood sweet reminiscing my elementary school days of the annual Valentine's Day- chocolate red heart shaped in solid milk chocolate $4.00 each. Billy, the server was warm and hospitable to relate about my childhood red heart shaped chocolate. There were other novelty shaped chocolates but the red foil heart shaped turns back time to my childhood-- a happier and simpler time in my life. Li-Lac Chocolates appear very simple not artisan -ish which I like simple but good quality. Fancy artisan, overpriced, over decorated, gourmet style does not impressed me as it does not meet quality, freshness, simplicity, and reasonable price.

Yelp
First time visit at the establishment, friendly and helpful sales person. She helped me customize my order and helped me keep within my budget.

Yelp
I loved discovering this gem inside the Chelsea Market. They have such delicious chocolates. I bought their white chocolate almond bark, white chocolate cashew bark, dark chocolate pop, butter crunch, and dark mocha truffles. All were simply amazing. My favourite would be their butter crunch which were a very unique type of toffee almond chocolate. Warning that it gets expensive for such small pieces of truffles! Service was just ok nothing special.

Yelp
BEST CHOCOLATES EVER! My personal favorites are the hazelnut squares and any of their creamy white chocolate! My in-laws LOVED the dark chocolate, and my son (4 y/o) of course went crazy for everything we got! Amazing chocolate, you can tell they put a lot of love into it! Awesome customer service too! Love supporting small businesses, it's so important!

Yelp
This Chocolate is flavor of Days Gone By! Absolutely fabulous chocolate ... We tried so many. Marzipan Roll in milk choc, raspberry jelly bar in dark choc, milk turtle clusters with caramel, dark choc coconut bar.... Unreal They have chocolate in novelty shapes. Football, Shoes Pumps, soccer ball, handbags, Oscar Statues, Empire State Building, champagne buckets with ice & bottle, Champagne Bottles..... They're currently getting ready for Easter. We will be buying our Easter Goodies @ LI-Lac this year!

Yelp
Gee, I don't know. Everyone else seems to love this place, but it just didn't do it for me. I've tasted the likes of La Maison du Chocolat, Teuscher, Jacques Torres, and Neuhaus and love them all. Even See's Chocolates out where I live....... but Li-Lac, regardless of it being the oldest chocolate producer in New York, just doesn't make a chocolate product that I like. It's kind of waxy and crunchy as a result, and instead, it should have just melted in my mouth. The pieces I bought should have had NO crunch to them. Also, the flavors were just weird, and it just didn't feel like high quality chocolate. To be honest, it was quite second rate to me. Maybe it has a much lower butterfat content, which might alter the taste and texture, and while it might also make it healthier for me, since when do I eat chocolate to save on fat and calories? I don't know what the problem is, but what I do know is that I want it to melt on my tongue and stay there. I want to really taste the flavor of chocolate and feel its smooth, silky richness. Li-Lac chocolates, at the least the 4 pieces that I tasted, did not allow me to achieve that state of bliss. Disappointed, too, because their packaging and store presentation is quite nice, but the actual taste and texture didn't match what I was viewing. Too bad.

Yelp
I enjoyed the chocolates from here! You could definitely taste the freshness but they were definitely over priced and could've been easier on the wallet.

Yelp
This Chelsea Market expansion not far from their other outposts is another welcome sweets addition to Chelsea Market, with prime corridor fronting, plentiful samples, friendly staff, and a great selection.

Yelp
I got really cute chocolates decorated with NYC designs as souvenirs for friends back home. They had every kind of chocolate here. Plus the lady that helped us made sure we got a package of chocolates to sample. While she rang us up she chatted in her New York accent about her son and had us cracking up. In a place full of great foods and cool shops the customer service and quality confections made this place stand out above the rest. If the prices were better I could give it 5 stars but it was kinda pricey. Then again everything in Chelsea was.

Yelp
On my way to Del Posto, I visited Chelsea Market. I got French Chocolate for the hub and the cutest ever mini Easter Basket for my Dad. So yummy!

Yelp
Fabulous selection of chocolate. Soooo many to chose from. I had milk chocolate cashew clusters. They were super great and tasted fresh. Feel like its over priced.

Yelp
It was my first time visiting Chelsea market and I wanted to get gifts for some friends I was meeting for dinner and the staff were so patient and helpful since I couldn't decide what to get. The presentation of the chocolate was beautiful and the chocolate themselves were the best I've ever had. Such great quality. My friends love the chocolates. I was very happy with their reaction. I will be dreaming of these chocolates until next time. Hopefully soon!!!

Yelp
I'm not sure why the really high rating. I'm a huge fan of chocolate tried the white chocolate hazelnut bar and aside from being extremely overpriced it was terrible. Texture, sweetness, ratio of nut to chocolate and presentation where all off the mark of me.

Yelp
We were helped by the sweetest lady- I think her name is Kee. She was very helpful, informative and timely. We chatted for a minute (literally just one minute, don't think she was just standing around chatting) and she was so sweet and told us all about the company. Thanks so much Kee!!

Evelyn Y.

Yelp
So I'm very picky when it comes to dark chocolate but this definitely tops them all! Dark chocolate almonds were great. The fudge was okay for my taste but my brother loved it!

David H.

Yelp
Wonderful high-end gourmet chocolate. A wide variety. Beautiful specialty items, especially for the holidays. Manager Shakia Hendley took extraordinary care of us for a large, important holiday order and went way above and beyond to ensure we were delighted with our purchase. Thank you.

Yelp
This review is strictly based on customer service or lack there of, to be exact. Nothing to do with the quality of the product, which continues to be excellent. The rude, lazy, snarky, clueless attitude of the sales associates at this particular location is a disgrace. They treat clients with utter disdain. They have no clue what the responsibility of a job in customer service requires. It starts with a greeting and a smile. They've never been taught that. They treat the product, which is pricy, like it's trash. It's a sad thing to see happen to a business I have patronized for over 40 years, way back at its original location on Christopher St. A word of advice to the new owner, Anthony; don't let untrained, ignorant workers destroy a NY food legend. Teach them how to your handle product with care and respect and not just dump it all into a bag without any regard. One more thing; teach your manage common courtesy and to value and respect customers; who ultimately pay their wages.

Yelp
Li-Lac Chocolates is a wonderful new edition to the Chelsea Market! As a tenant of the building for many years, I frequent the market place and am always delighted to stop by and taste the delectable samples that are always left for the customers enjoyment. The staff is pleasant, friendly and quite knowledgeable in the different varieties of chocolate that they offer. Tamara, one of their most wonderful employees, is always a pleasure to work with whenever I'm making a purchase, or just can't seem to make up my mind which type of chocolate I want to cheat on my diet with! Their displays are always great to look at and wonderfully reflect the festivities of the holidays. Love this store and will continue to be a regular customer!

Yelp
Just received my online order of chocolate-covered marzipan (both the Acorns and the Rolls) from Li-Lac Chocolates. The box arrived the next morning after being shipped via FedEx Ground, with the cold pack I requested, and in perfect condition. It is some of the most delicious marzipan I have ever tasted. Judging from it's flavor and green color, it seems a perfect mixture of almond and pistachio. The marzipan acorns are half dipped in chocolate, and so are great for those of us who really love our marzipan. The marzipan rolls are enrobed in delectable dark or milk chocolate, and are also wonderful. Thank you, Li-Lac!!!

Yelp
Historic NYC chocolatier with epic levels of deliciousness!! There is only one thing that can get me to brave the slow-walking crowds at Chelsea Market that make Macy's look like a deserted island, and that's Li-lac Chocolates. I used to go to the Christopher Street location decades ago, before they lost their lease, and get sugary pralines when I was a little girl. Now I brave the crowds to get the decadent French Rolls, which is what people in-the-know order (or so I'm told). Li-lac's also is the perfect place to find just about anyone a gift, for any occasion. They have cute chocolate alphabet letters, molds of NYC icons (Empire State Bldg), sporting goods, and girly things like purses and shoes, etc. I always find the perfect gift here; even the simple Nonpareils are heavenly and always a hit!

Yelp
It smelled so good when I walked in! Loved the stacks and mounds of chocolate. Delicious!
