Western Australia for the Food Is the Next Great Food Lover's Destination

"A working-man's pub transformed into a French‑Vietnamese bistro with Parisian décor, natural wines by the glass, garlic-chilli-crab (or garlic-crab) noodles on the menu, and an inclusive, safe-space vibe — even a tongue-in-cheek window caption announcing, "We accept Walkens." - Kevin West Kevin West Kevin West is a writer, food consultant, and “canning evangelist” (according to NPR). Loved this place! So beautiful inside and service was friendly and accommodating. Loved the furnishings. The chicken salad was amazing! Absolutely loved the red wine that I searched for the winery. Brussel sprouts entree was so good, a little spicy but best we’ve had apart from what we do at home with them. We didn’t have dessert though as there was no dairy free or vegan options for it.

Made a reservation for two and was unfortunately really let down. We were sat at couches when the dining room was half empty? When I asked if we could move they said no as we were fully booked but tables were still empty by the time we had left. Service was below the belt, I’m assuming very busy and stressful time of year means tonight could have just been an off night. Dishes were forgotten, empty plates and wine glasses left on the table the whole dinner, just generally very snappy and unkind behaviour from our server. Tuna is great! Everything else was poor, the crab noodles had no crab and was so salty. The salt and pepper tofu was overwhelmingly tasting of vinegar. At the end of the night I still went to tip as it is a very busy time of year and the hospitality team work so hard for our enjoyment. But then the lady at the till rolled her eyes at us and was incredibly short during the whole payment. The whole night was a real bummer and it’s my first time ever writing a review like this. The place has amazing potential, hoping this was just an off night

Food = 10/10. Unfortunately I will not return unless this place has a massive revamp. I am not sure if this is intentional but it feels like you are at a family lunch at an elderly relatives home where you have to find any part of the living area to sit and eat. Me and my two friends were sat on a small stage in the corner with three arm chairs and a coffee table which was quite uncomfortable. The couple beside us were seated at a desk and there was another group sat on two long couches with a long coffee table in the middle. In our opinion, the general aesthetic, cleanliness and atmosphere of the restaurant does not match the high prices of the food and alcohol at this venue. It smells like moth balls, curtains are dusty, there is visible mould and the ceiling is starting to cave in. Unfortunately we are aware there is no other venue like this in Albany so Liberte can get away with being a dump that sells quality food. Service was decent (for Albany)

We were recommended to try out this restaurant while visiting Denmark. Beautiful setting and quick service from the waitress. Abit of a wait from the kitchen. Non carbs items are yummy. We had the chicken liver parfait, crispy pork belly, loaded fries, fried rice and crab noodles. Chicken liver parfait (6pcs)- pleasant taste but inconsistent amount on the liver. Some had generous amount some only a dollop on a prawn cracker. Crispy pork belly - crispy with beetroot salad. Very small portion. Not a size for sharing as per the menu ‘sharing is caring’ Loaded fries with brisket - spicy. Kids couldn’t eat it. Average Fried rice for kids - not suitable for kids at all. Spicy and taste like tomyum fried rice. Only carbs barely any meat The famous garlic crab noodles - without any crab. $36 with all carbs. Some cheese and greens on top. Overpowering sauce like pad Thai. If u are going for the crab. Then avoid this as there isn’t any in it.

This place was such a cool experience. I was recommended by a friend to check it out. Loved the layout it was awesome. Very retro felt like you went back in time. Food was tasty! Love the loaded fries with brisket, pork belly was tasty, bao also tasty and fried rice was nice if you like the taste of lemon grass and I do. Nothing to complain about there. Cocktails were also nice but on the pricer side. For two starters, two mains and a cocktail each it was $160. Definitely happy I went and can say I've done it.

Google
where do I start….. I never liked those extremely negative google reviews that seemingly criticise just about anything about a food establishment, yet here I am. Came here expecting a decent and quick touch and go dinner, but left not being able to compliment anything else beyond the warm and cosy ambience of this place. Our rice paper toastie, pork belly and tuna crudo were rather awkward attempts at doing an Asian/French(?) fusion. Rice, (perhaps a staple of any Asian cuisine) and pork belly never made it to our table (40+ mins) before we attempted to cancel them. Fine - perhaps the food wasn’t suited for our palates, and maybe the staff were busy. Other things we were not happy about: Waiting staff were quite pleasant but honestly not attentive - water not refilled promptly, hard to get their attention to place an order. And like a final punch to my gut, the dear cashier was rather impolite. I asked if he could repeat my order to ensure I was paying for the right table - dude prints off a receipt, activates the eftpos machine, doesn’t say a word and walks away? Overall it was a very terrible experience - how does one place mess up a service so many times? Were we that unlucky? I was embarrassed to have brought my family here, then bring them to hungry jacks afterwards so they wouldn’t go hungry for the night. I genuinely do not wish for any unassuming group to wander into this place hoping to find a decent bite. Please do not waste such a beautiful space - we hope something changes about it. Please.

One of the best meals we had in Western Australia. Creative dishes in a fun and funky atmosphere. We enjoyed the chicken salad, crab noodles and pork belly. Portions of each dish were good. Reservations highly recommended

Yelp
Old world charm meets modern day restaurant in Albany - with a capital WOW! Liberte is in the London Hotel and feels like you've stepped into a classy parlour with an incredible boudoir style sophistication. The menu is inventive and Asian inspired with a focus on seasonal local produce. GF items are denoted and only make up about 30% of menu but a heads up that the staff were happy to help - I shared stir fry Asian greens, whiting, fries, quail and an amazing egg nest pancake dish - order it! Extensive drinks menu, great for large groups or an intimate catch up. Be transported to 1920s Paris or 1960s New York in present day Albany while enjoying a delicious feast.

Yelp
Excellent French-Vietnamese fusion. Classy cocktails. A bit pricey, but we'll worth it. The restaurant is shabby chic with an eclectic style. A lovely warm fire in winter.

Yelp
The London Hotel on Stirling Terrace houses one of, if not the, best destinations in Albany - Liberté - a wine bar, coffee shop, tea rooms, restaurant - with the area at the rear of the place a wonderland of baroque style furniture - plush velvet, ornately carved wood, leather, marble, dazzling chandeliers, large hanging mirrors - it has the lot, all set up as eating and drinking and relaxing nooks. The menu, designed and produced by the amazingly talented Amy Hamilton is a celebration of French-Vietnamese fusion - perfectly suited to the room which could almost be a salon from French Colonial days in Saigon. We dropped in a couple of times during our trip to Albany last week, the first for lunch, the second for a relaxing late afternoon/early evening drink - both visits immensely enjoyable, relaxing and creating the urge to return again. The menu is not too large, but has a tantalizing collection of dishes to choose, mostly designed to share - for us fried Brussel sprouts; roast pumpkin dumplings; and crab and garlic noodles saw us through lunch - on our evening return we had a dish of salt and pepper whitebait to accompany our wine. The wine list is a carefully curated selection of Great Southern wines, a couple from Margaret River and, reasonably, a few from France to balance out the cuisine - over the course of our time there - Tripe.Iscariot's Margaret River Grenache Rosé; La Violetta's delectable Ye Ye Grise a Gewurztraminer and Riesling blend from the Great Southern; Apricus Hill Denmark Pinot Noir; and Mark Warren's Margaret River Marq Malbec all impressed and satisfied. Excellent wine list - but the focus is and should be the food. The dumplings, beautifully gelatinous skins encasing moist, sweetly earthy roasted pumpkin, well-seasoned and scattered with nutty sesame seeds, arrived with "secret" dipping sauce - a honey soy combo that added a sweet sour salty note - delicious. The sprouts, fried to a dark, crisped consistency, cooked with chilli, lime and honey were crunchy, zesty, the contrast of the flavours and texture a wonder to behold - ah... if only all Brussel sprouts of my childhood had been cooked like this! And the noodles, slippery, al dente, oily, loaded with succulent picked crab meat, oodles of garlic, scattered green onions were stunningly good - one to return for, for sure. Salt and pepper whitebait, certainly salty and causing a thirst for more wine, were equally as satisfying as the other dishes - crispy fish, and a sourly creamy tamarind dipping sauce. A couple of people we spoke to later gave rave reviews of the loaded fries - so something for us to remember on our next visit! Liberté is simply one of the best dining houses in the State, and should not be missed on any trip to Albany and the Great Southern. Atmospheric, outstanding wine selection, friendly and welcoming staff, brilliant food - what is not to love? And if it's just a glass of wine, or a coffee, tea and cake you want, then sitting in the salon of Liberté is hard to beat....

Yelp
WOW- I've stepped into the Delorean and been time shifted from Albany, WA (yes you are reading correctly - ALBANY!!) to a boho Sydney bar decorated in an eclectic, Parisian influenced, funky disco style with Louis XVI velvet armchairs! Back to reality and I realise I'm actually in down town Albany - country WA. Absolutely fantastic coffee and GF chocolate cake. Wine, tea, coffee and food in a seductively beautiful building. Albany I hope you realise how lucky you are because there is a serious lack of upmarket, quality eating and drinking venues in this area! And don't get me started on the woeful standard of coffee!!

Yelp
Fabulous interesting food and awesome staff! Absolutely gorgeous quirky venue that is comfortable and stylish. Never disappoints. Wine list and cocktails are extensive.

Yelp
This place is incredible! The furniture is quirky and interesting and the flavors in the food are out of this world. The loaded fries are delicious as are the beef and pork belly and chicken bao everything was mouthwatering. The cocktail menu is fantastic and they even accommodated my request for a non alcoholic sour cocktail. The staff are lovely and nothing was too much trouble. We will be recommending this place to everyone that visits beautiful Albany.

Yelp
Only in Albany for a couple of days. Found this place on a Yelp review. The beer was great, staff friendly and engaging. We liked the decor and feel so drifted back there for another beer and coffee Saturday arvo. Worth a visit, you won't be disappointed. The bar / coffee shop off the street leads onto a larger room at the back, the furnishings will captivate you.
