On the Grid : Liberty & 33rd

"Liberty & 33rd is a high-end antique furniture and rug company that sells pieces to designers across the country—the majority of their pieces are currently going to New York, Los Angeles, and Texas. Beginning as a furniture-flipping business in South Bend, owners Adam Cramer and his wife Kelsey transitioned to furniture restoration, curating a vast repertoire of high quality furniture and antiques and promoting the ecological benefits of buying second-hand. While they don’t have public store hours, you can schedule a time to visit the warehouse and wander through all sorts of unique items, like an 18th Century Indian Jhula bench swing." - West.SB

I purchased an antique Jacobean cabinet sight unseen via an Etsy listing. The cabinet was just as photographed. The owner, Adam, was very responsive and helpful. The entire transaction went as we had discussed. Shipping was via a 3rd party carrier and arrived on time. Beautiful and tasteful things in this shop! Highly recommend purchasing if you see something you like.

Finding Liberty was by sheer luck because I wasn’t really shopping, but I came across such a beautiful piece, that I couldn’t turn away. It was a big purchase for me and they were very patient with my 10,000 questions and replied in a timely manner. The shipping waa effortless and my first grown-up purchase is beautiful. Thank you!!

Google
Adam, I just wanted to say thank you for the Baker secretary bookcase. It’s beautiful and just as described. You sold it at a fair price and the delivery service was excellent with a smooth transition. I appreciate all that you and your company have done. I look forward to more purchases in the future. Thank you!

The chairs were as described...very good, used condition with slight wear. Adam arranged for shipping. Items were packed well and delivery was about two weeks. Very pleased with my purchase.!

The antique Chippendale style serpentine front dresser I purchased is in excellent condition -- it looks if anything even better in person than in the photos shown on Chairish, and delivery was smooth and helpful. No complaints at all!

Google
I found some beautiful Italian chairs on this site that go perfectly in my living room. They arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Adam was my contact person at Liberty and he was always quick to answer questions and give me information. I would definitely buy from them again!

The vintage dresser I purchased was exactly what I was looking for, is a fabulous quality piece and perfect for my home. Andrew Skipper was a joy to work with and provided excellent customer service. The shipping turnaround time was also amazing. I will definitely purchase again and highly recommend this company.

Yelp
I had multiple conversations and received nothing but professional and incredibly knowledgable feedback. Their refinished product is fantastic and I couldn't be more thrilled with their furniture. I would always begin here when looking for a new piece of quality furniture.

Yelp
BUYER BEWARE! Do not ask, DEMAND, to have accurate photos taken BEFORE giving a deposit to Adam. The photos were in no way accurate with regards to the finish on the piece of furniture I decided to purchase from Adam and his 33rd Liberty store. Upon discovering the misrepresentation of this piece of furniture and requesting a refund based on its misrepresentation, my request for a refund was adamantly REFUSED. Read on for my experience ... Initially, Adam was kind and very helpful when I was inquiring a piece of high-end bedroom furniture. Based on the description and the photographs, which were posted on Adams website, I decided to purchase a Drexel Heritage dresser for my bedroom. Adam stated that he required a $500 nonrefundable deposit to hold this is piece for me for 90 days, which would give me time to get rid of my old furniture and repaint my bedroom. Being thankful to Adam for offering to hold the dresser for me, I generously decided to give him a $2000 deposit instead of the $500 that he initially requested. My exact words to him was, " I know you have bills to pay and employees to pay", and therefore, out of the goodness of my heart, my deposit was $1500 more than he required In the meantime, I was searching the web for other pieces of the same line of furniture by Drexel Heritage to match the dresser. I soon discovered that the pieces I was finding elsewhere did not remotely match the finish of the dresser what were posted on Adam's website. I was extremely disappointed and attempted to communicate with Adam to request a refund. Adam avoided me and basically forced me to communicate with him through another one of his employees. During a phone conversation with one of his employees, Andrew, I was advised that Adam will in no way issue me a refund. As Andrew pointed out, all sales are final and no refunds were to be issued. Evidently, photograph misrepresentation of the actual items for sale in this store is quite convenient for Adam. Not wanting to deal with this business any longer, and knowing I would be forfeiting the $500 deposit, I asked for the remaining deposit, which would equal $1500. I absolutely positively knew that when I signed the contract virtually, it's specifically stated that the $500 deposit was nonrefundable. When I asked for the additional $1500 to be refunded to me, Andrew refused, stating that ANY and ALL deposits were nonrefundable. Andrew stated that Adam "would do me the favor" of giving me six months to purchase another item which he would apply the $2000 deposit that I was about to lose. After my awful experience, the last thing I wanted was to purchase another item from Adam. But given that I would lose $2000, I felt my only option would be to purchase another piece and trust that there were no more issues. I ended up purchasing a refinished Henredon bedroom dresser. As an FYI, I based my decision to purchase this item was only AFTER I searched Google and Yahoo images of the same piece of furniture, instead of trusting Adam's poor photography. I also opted to purchase the two matching nightstands, which were also refinished, from Adam. I was worried that the dresser being refinished may not match the finish on nightstands if I purchased them from another individual. So here we are three months after I made the purchases, and I received these three pieces two weeks ago. The dresser and one of the nightstands were nicely refinished, to which I am thankful considering what I had already been through. However, the second night stand's mahogany and walnut veneer is lifting off in a couple of different places on its top. I know better than to expect Adam do something about this piece of damaged furniture, since "all sales are final", despite the fact that I paid top dollar for these two nightstands. I will absolutely positively NEVER make another expensive furniture purchase online ever again, thanks to this costly "mistake" by Adam and his "liberty 33rd" business. To this day, I have not heard one single word from Adam. I trusted him. I had faith in him. I gave him $1500 MORE than he required, and I faced losing it all! Day by day it seems that more and more people live and survive by unethical practices and very questionable morals. The only thing I can say is karma will one day catch up with Adam. If I lived my life by the same morals and integrity that this guy does, I would rather be poor and homeless!

Yelp
I bought a pair of John Stuart nightstands they had listed on LiveAuctioneers. They stated that they were rosewood, chrome and black lacquer that were newly refinished. As I have the matching dressers I was excited to find the nightstands. Unfortunately, what they failed to say was they did not refinish them in the original gloss black lacquer but a satin lacquer which wasn't apparent by looking at the pictures. I know that a gloss finish is more difficult and expensive than a satin finish so I imagine that's why they did it. I now have a bedroom set that doesn't match because, I feel, they misrepresented their nightstands. When I spoke to them about it they pretty much put it on me with "I wish you would have asked", as if I should have just assumed they didn't refinish them in the original John Stuart finish. And the auction experience was not a good one to say the least. They put a starting bid of $500 on them but apparently wanted no less than $1400 so when I bid $500 it said "reserve not met" and I kept bidding in $100 increments and kept getting "reserve not met" until I hit $1400. I am fairly new at the auction thing but it just seems wrong to me to put a starting bid of $500 on something you won't take less than $1400 for. So when I finally got them and they weren't what they should have been, that was just insult to injury, a bad experience whichever way you look at it.

Yelp
I bought a Danish MCM bookcase remotely and had it delivered. It was a gamble bc I'd never heard of the store before--and I didn't want to drive all the way from Chicago to look at the piece in person. I'm so glad I bought it. It's in perfect condition. Worth every penny! Even more amazing, they delivered all the way to Chicago--arriving exactly when they said they would. I will definitely be a frequent browser on the website for future pieces.

Yelp
Bought a bookshelf from this store after seeing the ad on Craigslist. The stand was advertised as being a Beachwood piece of furniture. After driving 2 and a half hours to the store, I arrived to discover the shelf was not Beachwood but Beachwood veneer. The price was $450 and reasonable for a solid Beachwood shelf, but not Beachwood veneer. It was also stained and water damaged. When I brought this up to the store they stated they had plenty of buyers and "We ship nationally". I should have walked away but after the drive I wasn't leaving empty handed. I will say the employee who met us after hours was very helpful because he met us after hours. We meant to arrive before they closed but due to the time difference, we ended up being an hour late. Adam was great but the piece is crap.

Yelp
Fantastic place! I found a wonderful and affordable antique dresser. They went above and beyond to get it to me - closed the shop early so that they could deliver it on a Friday afternoon (in the rain). Such a great business! I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
This is definitely worth the trip if you're in South Bend! They have a big warehouse type store with just about every type of vintage furniture you could think of. They also have a large selection of rugs, mirrors and chairs. Ted sold me a dresser, and the service was good even though he was the only one working on the floor. Some of the pieces are on the higher side for my college student budget but there are certainly some good deals to be had and the quality is great. I would definitely recommend!
