The Most Beautiful Libraries in the World

"This hidden gem, the main branch of Budapest’s broader Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library, is tucked away in a 19th-century neo-baroque palace. While it might seem like a deceptively normal public library when you enter, the fourth-floor royal reading rooms stun with glowing chandeliers, spiral staircases, and of course, plenty of books. Whether you grab one there or bring your own, something to read is a must-have when you visit, tourists say—there’s no better way to take in the atmosphere when you're visiting one of our 24 Best Places to Go in 2024." - Caitlin Morton, Anna Borges

One of the most beautiful and interesting library in Budapest! You can visit it for free, but you have to make a reservation. Its good place to study or even to work

Lovely! I enjoyed the tour, during the Cultural Heritage Days 2021. The library seems a peaceful place, if only to go there to read the newspapers, as the guide told us some people do. There are also EU and UN publications stored and available upstairs. The rooms have a very charming atmosphere, with some old furniture and staircases. To top it all, it has views on the Danube.

Great place to go, super beautiful, free, hardly any tourists at all. You need to register first on the website. You can do it just before you go, then bring your passport for ID. The guard on the side needs to check your ID, check that you have registered. Then you go to the danube side and go in door XXV. Also there is the NYT and FT, but mostly really beautiful bookshelves, lighting, desks and other details. Be sure to climb up to the second floor. Nice wooden lockers for free too.

Student membership is 2k for a year. You need to pre-register first in the website, then you’ll come to the library and complete your registration in person (approximately 15 mins). The best library I tried in Budapest. Internet is really good, library is very comfortable. No need to mention about beauty of the building. You can lock your stuff and you can bring your own food, there are fridges and microwaves, plus cheap coffee.

Inspiring place to study from Beautiful inside, it’s literally from another time. Vibe is young, but there’s a few old guys reading newspapers there. Also, there’s scenic views of the river from there. Very quiet inside and you have to wear a mask while studying.

With the Danube view, it’s the most beautiful library I’ve ever seen! Preregistration is required. Staff are very kind.

Need to register online first, the entrance is a small fence with guards, I missed it so me a whole loop to enter. The guard inside the building was not nice at all. But the librarian was very kind and helpful. I read my book peacefully there!
