4 Small Towns to Visit Along the U.S. Civil Rights Trail

"In 1955, Sarasota's NAACP president Neil Humphrey Sr. organized wade-ins at Lido Beach to protest the lack of access Black residents had to the state's shoreline. This demonstration introduced wade-ins as a new tool of the civil rights movement. Visitors can explore the Newtown African American Heritage Trail, featuring 15 historical markers, and join guided tours as part of the Newtown Alive initiative." - Jessica Poitevien Jessica Poitevien Jessica Poitevien is an international storyteller and regular contributor to Travel + Leisure. We reached Lido Key Beach around 10:00 am and found plenty of parking without any stress. The beach felt calm and uncrowded at that time, making it a great window to visit. When we were leaving around 1:45 pm, we noticed several cars circling and people struggling to find parking, so arriving earlier in the day definitely makes a big difference. The beach itself is beautiful, with bright white, soft sand that’s comfortable to walk on. There were lots of birds around, which added to the relaxed, coastal vibe and made it enjoyable just to sit and watch them along the shoreline. One of the highlights is the iconic red lifeguard stand — it’s very photogenic and stands out nicely against the blue water and white sand. Overall, it’s a clean, scenic beach that’s perfect for a laid-back morning, photography, or just enjoying the sound of the waves before it gets busier later in the day.

Loved this clean, beautiful beach! Amenities like food, drinks, and ice cream make it easy to relax, plus restrooms, showers, and changing rooms. Super easy trip from downtown Sarasota on the free trolley.

I love Lido Key! Living in Sarasota, it's one of the best beaches to go to that's not overly crowded. The bar , music and the vibe is always perfect

This beach is beautiful, white sand, not crowded, clean. I did not see a lot of parking available. The town is pretty close, there’s local trolleys and such to help you get around. The sunsets are my favorite.

Beautiful beach I feel like a lot of people will compare the beach to siesta key the good thing about this beach is that it is not always overcrowded like siesta key, it is easier to find parking and there’s multiple entrances. Some entrances are closer to the food court, others It will be a further walk, The food area is called lido grill with good quality food and a nice bathroom area. The water is clear/ light green color, sand is white a little shelly but beautiful, clean beach not usually too overpacked. I even came here during the Christmas and holiday time, and it was not too bad. Nothing compared to how crammed siesta key beach is, also holiday parking is free here and they have parking along the street as well as a parking area that can sometimes be free or low cost. Also, for those who might need wheelchair accessibility, there is not a flat pad to get one to the beach on a regular wheelchair, but there is a flat area by the water that I saw individuals with motorized wheelchairs for the beach that they were using on the flat area by the water.
