Harassed Mother Is Filmstar for One Blissful Afternoon
We arrived at the Lido Di Venezia by watertaxi..it's simply the only way, dahhlings! I donned my white catseye shades and my son tried hard to resemble the exquisite boy in "Death In Venice". As he is a burly rugby-playing eleven-year-old, and I am a pallid redhead with freckle issues, we perhaps did not quite pull it off. However, when we reached our bit of the beach, which boasted huge fourposter beachbeds , wafty muslin curtains, and a gleamingly clean little bar ;we both started to feel like filmstars. The white soft sand and cerulean blue of the sky and the sea was an immediate enchantment. The fact that you could trot to the friendly little barman at the friendly little bar, dry off with a dry Martini, and then lie back on the towelling mattresses of the beachbeds, and read, was my idea of paradise. My son, meanwhile, divided his attentions between the water and the music on his I-pod, in equal bliss. I went in for a languid swim from time to time, and then resumed my position. The distant cries of Italian children and the occasional small plane trailing an advertising banner for some suitably glamorous product, were the only sounds besides the gentle splashing of the Adriatic. Warm air scented with blossom mingled with the aroma of delicious Italian coffee. The whole experience was irresistible to the senses, and the ultimate in simple relaxation. We stayed until the cool of the evening descended, and then walked back to the water taxi stop, and back to our Venetian hotel, feeling like celebrities. My shoulders had descended from their usual position, around ear level, and my son was temporarily lulled into contentment. An unforgettable day at the Lido di Venezia.
