Mel Ottenberg’s Grub Street Diet

"I buy things at the health-food store Lifetime (Once Again roasted chunky almond butter is one of my go-tos), and I also tried a new coffee from Lifetime that I found bad — I still drank two cups but won’t be having it again." - Rima Parikh, Sarah Kilcoyne

I can’t believe this gym is called lifetime this location is absolutely disgraceful. This place is dirtier than planet fitness you come here for a workout and you feel absolutely disgusting. It is so dirty here I told them countless times if they need somebody who can actually clean I will clean for the membership. scuff marks all over the floor squat racks look like they haven’t been cleaned in one year and on top of that I found a piece of gum in the sauna for $290 a month. This is absolute crime. Whoever pays $290 a month for this is getting taken advantage of. The only location that is worth this amount is Syosset the cleanliness of Syosset dominates the cleanliness of Garden City. The most I will give this location is two stars it’s absolutely dirty and needs a deep cleaning. Hot tub is also broken and making weird noises. They need to drain the whole hot tub and scrub the walls of the hot tub. I have attached a photo of the conditions of the hot tub. I’ve been to almost every single lifetime, including the ones in the city, and none of them are as dirty as this place this is looking like a LA fitness. The cost of the membership for the quality of this gym is insane and makes absolutely no sense. This dirty filthy gym makes me wanna quit and go back to push fitness new Hyde Park. That’s only $50 a month and is much cleaner. Thank God For Syosset, location or else I would have quit a long time ago. Very sad because this location is so convenient and has so much potential, but they do not know how to maintain this facility. The GM is not doing anything seems like he has no interest in maintaining this facility. Please communicate with Syosset and have their cleaning peoples come here because the people cleaning here are not doing anything and it’s ruining the lifetime image.

Where to begin… The personal trainers (Gabe O.) hog up prime space lifting during peak hours and act like they own the gym. Many of their trainers (John K.) have been fired from other high-end gyms. The sauna is disgusting. Lockers are all dirty. Locker room staff spends more time talking than working. This place has gotten absolutely out of control with the group classes. All regular hours, it’s overflowing. It’s horrible. It’s not worth joining if you just want to use it as a regular gym and workout unbothered- which for $350/mo you should be able to do. I leave here more stressed than I was when I arrived most of the time. The blonde older lady who has been working at the front desk for years is so rude and never smiles. The locker room and lockers are DIRTY AND DISGUSTING, FILTHY. Also, in the Men’s Locker Room - they NEED ventilation in the bathroom area. MOST OF THE TIME ALL THREE STALLS ARE FULL

Great Gym and Facilities. It is pricey and be sure to pay attention to notifications. There are “ up charges “ such as outdoor pool . They do offer a family plan which I use . There is a concierge that can walk you through the process before Joining. A few stand out employees that love their job , most people who work there a generally happy to be there . The rest are honestly stressed out and not at all happy, perhaps working there for the free membership. Overall an excellent gym.

Do not put your kids in the daycare if they do not talk dangerous , My nine month old was at the daycare mind you They make you make a reservation for infants, younger than one years old as they are supposed to be in a separate section, I got a call around 20 minutes after my son was in the daycare saying that “he wasn’t doing so well” I said what do you mean that he was not doing so well they said that he won’t stop crying. Side note My son does not cry unless he wants to get out of the stroller needs a bottle or needs to be changed. he went to the bathroom before I dropped him off so I knew it most likely wasn’t that he needed go to bathroom, I told them to give him his bottle as it’s 1135 at this point and I have to pick him up at 12 because that’s when the daycare end so I said I’ll be there soon give him his bottle. He’s probably hungry. When I arrive, they hand me my 9 month old and as I’m putting him into the stroller he’s crying holding his face. I notice that he has a big welt on his face. I asked them what happened did he fall? The lady told me hang on let me find out so she goes in the back and she comes back and tells me that there was a kid sent home because he was hitting kids. If my son did not have the welt on his face & I Didint ask what happen to his face , They were never going to tell me that some kid was hitting him in the face with something. The kid was older than one years old, not even supposed to be in the infant section they took advantage of my son not talking , I would have never knew my son was being abused had he not had the welt on his face . They thought they would get away with not telling me my son was hit in the face because he doesn’t talk , after I asked was I was not notified that he was hit in the face the front desk lady says let me get the daycare manager. Ms Jackson comes out nonchalant like it’s not a big deal my 9 month old has a bogey on his face , her response was “what’s up” she was very rude and unprofessional told me I can’t get a incident report because she’s busy mind you there’s only two other kids in the daycare section and over 4 staff members , she told me I was not noticed my son was hit because staff was busy , she had a complete nasty attitude and completely unprofessional she should not be working in a setting of children , they were very dismissive rude and unprofessional, Do not trust these people with your kids especially if they don’t talk ,

Ada is incredible! My phone was dead and she lent me her charger and she saved me. I was a damsel in distress and she saved me. She is also an incredible worker, her customer service excels. As well as Yvette. She makes incredible shakes and always welcomes with “What’s up queen”. They both always have a smile on their face! The bartender is also incredible and makes amazing drinks. He is very thoughtful in keeping my drinks low cal. He even asked me if I wanted syrup so that I didn’t ruin my workout which was amazing. This ambiance keeps me coming daily! They also always refill my tumbler with a smile each time!

Just started and I am thrilled to report that I am impressed. It's a great gym if you are looking for doing more than just lift weights. Three pickle ball courts, full court basketball, multiple indoor pools, sauna, steam room, a ton of studio classes for different levels of fitness, good quality machines. It's clean, not super crowded and so far everyone has been polite. It's pricey but you get what you pay for. If you take advantage of everything it's a great deal. Highly recommend!

I just tried the new Aescape robot for 30 mins and I’m really impressed. Everything was adjustable on the tablet like pressure, music, sceneries, how much time for each area, etc. The robot arms were heated so that definitely felt nice and not like a cold robot is touching you. It felt good!!! Definitely recommend if you’re someone who doesn’t feel comfortable with people touching you or if you just want to give it a try because it is really cool and innovative

I am very grateful to the staff members who helped me find $200 cash lost in the pool area. My wife even said she didn’t expect to get it back. Thank you and much appreciation!

Yelp
This is the most amazing club!! I call it a club because it is beyond a gym. Everyone is so kind, it is so clean. I love it has everything including an outdoor pool!! I go and never want to leave. The employees are helpful, cheerful knowledgeable. It's just a thoroughly perfectly run gym. I also love that they added it in a social life at night. That is another big plus, I feel so excited since I joined it has changed my life. I spent so many hours there.!!

Yelp
This gym is a nightmare. I was a loyal member for two years, but the front desk staff (Justyna and Giordan) are rude, dishonest, and completely unprofessional. They pressured me to cancel my membership, lied about who the manager was, and even laughed about having "plenty of people on the waiting list." They don't care about loyal members, only about replacing you with someone new. The place is dirty, the service is trash, and any changes to your membership happen behind your back without proper notice. If you value respect, honesty, or basic cleanliness -- stay away. Zero stars.

Yelp
I've been coming to Lifetime Fitness for 8 years. Started as solo and then got my family enrolled throughout the years. I've never experienced anything like what happened recently. We pay nearly $900 a month for our memberships and our three kids' swim classes, so we've always expected -- and usually received -- respectful treatment. This past Sunday, my kids were running late for their swim class. When they arrived, my wife rushed them inside so they wouldn't miss more time, planning to return immediately to the front desk to scan in. We were even planning on enrolling our youngest daughter to swim class that day as well. My wife also had our Nanny with us as helper who was also considering enrolling her own daughter in the gym and its programs, so she joined us to see how everything worked. Unfortunately, what she witnessed ended up convincing her not to sign up at all. At the front desk, the receptionist, Sharon, stopped my wife very abruptly and insisted she scan in first -- despite her clearly explaining that the kids were late and she would come right back. She said "I don't care" and even made her pull all kids out of their class and bring them back to the front desk just to scan in. When she explained that our family has been a member for 8 years and fully intended to follow the process, she responded with, "If you've been coming here this long, you should know how to follow the rules," followed by, "Maybe you should arrive on time next time." Our Nanny was shocked and even asked us why we pay so much here just to be treated this way. My wife asked to speak with a manager -- something we've never done anywhere -- and Cheryl, the manager, came out. Unfortunately, she immediately sided with Sharon and made them feel unwelcome rather than heard. The entire interaction left them feeling disrespected and uncomfortable, and it genuinely made my wife question whether they were being treated differently for racially motivated reasons that should never play a role in customer service. In eight years, we have never had an issue with anyone at this club, but this was our first time interacting with these two staff members, and the experience was deeply disappointing for both me and my family. Sadly, Lifetime has lost a long-term customer -- and a potential new one.

Komal S.

Yelp
Our family has been loyal member of this gym for last 4 years, but the front desk staff (Sharon and Cheryl) are very rude and unprofessional. My kids are taking swimming lessons for last 5 years, we wanted our youngest kid to try the pool, she has been prone to develop allergies to public pool. These 2 staff members treated me like I am a thief, started yelling you have to buy her membership to which I calmly replied, ok let me drop off my kids to their swimming class and then I will register my youngest child as well, she wouldn't let me do that either. We had to ask our nanny to wait in the car with my youngest child. If you want to be insulted join this gym. We will be cancelling our membership and will recommend our friends to cancel their membership as well.

Yelp
This is by far the biggest lifetime I've ever been to!! I love the turf! I also love that the squat racks are separated on a different floor! I DON'T like how the boxing equipment is right next to it. (These are all on the third floor). Boxing floor needs its own soundproof area, it's so annoying to hear. I'm kind of in and out after my workouts and don't dally much, but there's just so much to explore when I have time. I'm dying to try out the aquatics section this summer tho!!

Yelp
I noticed it was very clean when I walked in. I came for my nieces birthday party and liked how clean and spacious is it. I came with my sister before the party to drop something off, so I knew where to go. When I came back, with my husband, the front desk stopped us and asked if we were for the birthday party. Once we said yes, they directed to two women about 20 feet back saying they know more information about the party.

Yelp
This club needs serious customer service training. They don't tell you it's $75 to bring a guest outside when you sign up. The trainers interrupted me while working out. They tell people they're doing things wrong so you sign up for $130 sessions. Some of the trainers are very arrogant and disrespectful. Manager blows you off when kids are in your lap lanes.. Had a stretching treatment that was very painful and hurt for days. Also didn't like how they use noisy power washers in the showers in the morning when you go there to relax..not worth $3000 a yr.

Yelp
im going to increase this a bit due to things Ive noticed. The personal trainers leave you alone unless you need help or have a question. They dont run up on you like most gyms. I do not know if its because I know what Im doing or because they know its a elite location so they dont bother you . I also witnessed a lady get hurt and everyone ran like they were first reponders on site, as a first responder who also reacted the same way. I gotta give them props. The thing about this gym is that its all different entites so not every employee in every section is the same. So far the trainers are solid in regard to respecting space and responses for assistance in anyway.

Jason D.

Yelp
Pros its big and well equipped, place gets very crowded in the summer months.Biggest problems with this place is machines like the stairmill never get fixed which is no excuse for the amount they charge per month and Im convinced people at the front desk hate their job.Say Hello to them and you might get a blank stare but most of the time they wont look up from their phone or computer. They havent mastered the basics like every well managed gym does but hey they are great throwing a pool party and selling Liquor if your in to that.

Yelp
My family has been members of Lifetime for the past 12 years. On 6/8/24 at 10:30am, a team member at the front desk was blatantly rude and unprofessional. There was a miscommunication about the status of my mother's membership. She had a medical procedure and thought she needed to pause her membership since she would not be able to exercise for a month. She spoke with a team member about this and they said since we are a family of four the membership fee does not change if we still have 3 active members. In the past members of my family have paused their memberships and when they returned simply scanned back in at the club to reactive it. Yesterday a front desk team member berated my mother insisting she was not an active member. My mother, confused about the situation said not one has said anything to her as she has been attending classes after her recovery the past few weeks. She continued to state my mother was not an active member and did not listen to anything my mother had to say. Frustrated my mother asked for the manager to which the woman said she was the manager. As it was a Saturday morning it was very busy in the lobby. There were many onlookers who watched as this team member who called herself the manager belittled my mother for attending classes in the past weeks. The woman (white, slim, light hair) caused a scene. She kept insisting my mother was not a member and has been coming in "without paying" the past few weeks. This "manager" could have pulled her aside and clarified the situation while reactivating her membership status. Instead she embarrassed my mother and kicked her out of the club. Frankly this behavior and treatment is demeaning and disgusting considering the membership fees and length of time we have attended this club. TLDR: Unprofessional "manager" bullied my elderly mother out of the club.

Yelp
Pool is fantastic and outdoor pool in the summer is just amazing. My one issue would be that some of the lifeguards are perhaps less than what you'd expect from a place like this. One incident really sticks out in my mind. A guard was eating his dinner and when he finished, he walked over, bent down, and rinsed his hands in the pool. Now that's just gross!
google avatar

Yelp
HEY BILLIONAIRES IN CHARGE; YOUR GUEST PASS RULES ARE COMPLETE AND TOTAL B.S. I brought a friend to the gym as a guest.......since i had my 2 "guest passes" to use that month at 5:45 on a saturday morning (because i worked that morning......my friend didn't) and was told my guest couldn't work out because i had already brought her as a guest roughly one month earlier and YOU CANNOT BRING THE SAME "GUEST" TWICE WITHIN A 60 DAY PERIOD............WTF?!?!?!?! $239 (no even more btw) bucks a month includes a whopping TWO "guest passes" and you can't use them with the same person within a 60 day period. So basically they are not guest passes at all they are CLUB PROMOTION PASSES. The point of this review is just to contribute to the list of complaints about this policy. I didn't wanna give 1 star cause im not a scumbag like whoever enacted this rule. Plus its a beautiful gym.....it has its positives and negatives like any gym theres no point in getting into them. BILLIONAIRE OWNERS.....STOP BEING SLEAZY! GET RID OF THIS RIDICULOUS POLICY YOUR MEMBERS PAY ENOUGH MONEY TO BRING WHOEVER THEY WANT TO THE GYM AS A GUEST TWICE A MONTH.

Yelp
This is a great gym. I have been a member for 3.5 years. I am an extremely lazy person who prefers to eat so my friends keep me in check so I can continue to eat. I don't like one particular exercise so I try a bunch of random classes. I love boxing and martial arts with Gab. Chris's alpha class kicks my butt. RJ is an amazing rings/calisthenics. Fernando is great for weights and personal training and he's a professional at dynamic stretch. There are so many great teachers at the gym who help me out even when I am not paying for a personal training session because everyone is super friendly. The aquatics team is super friendly and always help us out and is super good at returning my calls and answering my 5 million questions about scheduling and swim lessons. Not everyone is great (there are 3 bags eggs I've run into) but the majority of the staff and people here are great! We love kids academy and it's an amazing babysitting service that has stem and gym classes for everyone!!
google avatar

Yelp
The best gym ever and friendly staff always willing to help the place is always clean and well kept

Yelp
Great gym, you really get the value out of all the amenities they offer. Could spend hours enjoying all the different amenities. Always updating their equipment too which is a massive plus

Helena R.

Yelp
I've been a member of Life Time Garden City for about 8 years and this gym went down a lot yet my membership keeps increasing every couple of months. Lately, it feels like the gym is catering more to the children and making money. Overall, it's beginning to feel more and more like a YMCA type of facility rather than an exclusive country club. For example, over the summer they had swim team practice M-F from 6pm-8pm and two hours in the morning. There are two indoor lap pools and one lap pool outside during the summer. Rather than having the swim team practice in the indoor cold pool they have them in the outside lap pool which only has 6 lanes. They have done this for years but in the past they only took up two lanes and they didn't have practice every day. Now they are entitled to use 3 or 4 of the lanes and they have been there every day from 6-8pm which is a popular time to swim laps as many people end work at 5pm. I didn't swim there the entire summer and the one day I decided to go during the first week of September, I was kicked out of a lane after swimming for 20 mins due to them needing more space for swim team. I was extremely disappointed and the lifeguards were very rude about it as well as they rushed me out of the lane. Than when the outdoor pool closed at 7pm I decided to go to the indoor cold pool and I walked in and all of a sudden came in the swim team and they kicked me out again because they needed the entire pool for another hour of practice and the warm pool was packed with other swim lessons. It makes me wonder why they couldn't be at that indoor pool the entire time?? Also this year the outdoor pool closed earlier than ever, Sept 8th. Seems like every year is a week earlier! Meanwhile other locations are opened later such as Life Time in Westchester which has their outdoor pool open until Sept 30th! This summer they also hosted a ton of parties at the outdoor pool deck which I'm sure some people enjoyed but due to the parties they closed the pool early so many times this summer and also charged members to go to the party which I don't really think is right. They could definitely use new Management and someone to make this place as great as it used to be because I do think a lot of long time members are feeling this way and will start looking to join else where, this gym went down a lot and you should start listening to some of these testaments.
google avatar

Charity A.

Yelp
Best classes and instructors are at this gym. That's why I give it a four. But compared to other lifetimes it's dated and not that clean at times. There is a ring of dirt around the hot tub. But overall good experience.
google avatar

Daniel A.

Yelp
I've been coming to this gym for about 3 years now. The staff does a very good job keeping the entire gym very clean. Unlike other gyms, the free weights and plates are usually always re-racked nicely here. There's many amenities that I find useful here as well. There's about 8 squat racks in this gym compared to 2-4 in most gyms. Whether you are deadlifting or squatting, theres usually never a wait time when wanting to use the squatracks - HUGE PLUS. The top floor has a large turf which I find very useful for a lot of my HIIT workouts. Everyone is very friendly here as well. From the members to the staff. Jonathan Carroll and Clay I have known for many years and they keep the members very engaged in the group classes. They are both extremely approachable too with great attitudes. They are the best! Only reason why I give this place 4 stars is the steep rise in price of the base memberships. Definitely quite a sting to the wallet with the monthly charges, but the superiority of this gym compared to others definitely keeps the members.

Yelp
Shadow of its former self... Many members days are numbered. This gym was amazing, but its glory days are over sadly. The Basketball community was lied to, kept in the dark and deceived. They ripped out 1 full court to put in a permanent Pickle Ball court. That messed everything up. Having only 1 full court for basketball not only is NOT what I and many people signed up for, but it has created a wait time that of an L.A. Fitness for a next. It is insane. Also, the pickle ball court is empty soooooo much. GM, corporate or whoever is making the push to bet on Pickleball has destroyed the thriving Basketball Community which has come together at this gym. The bonds and comradery sadly shattered because of this move. To boot, We were told that no permanent fixture of a pickleball court would be added. Lies... the agenda was to add the pickleball court regardless of what the basketball community's concerns were. Plus, we were kept in the dark about all this, because they knew we would have a huge issue with this drastic change. Membership price has gone up since I have joined and the quality has gone down. Pool area... you name it. Don't get me started. The price increase for membership for "quality". I never complain, but I just could not stay silent anymore on this matter. I and many are hugely disappointed in this gym. PS. Edwin is no longer at this gym. He is at another location in another State now. Promotion? Hmmm Update after response below, from Gym: How do you plan on rectifying our concerns? You can't ! Lifetime Bucks is not an answer. The experience was in your hands to begin with and your club does not regret anything. Your top priority should not be to deceive your club members. People talk. You honestly think members don't know through word of mouth what is coming? The Basketball community was lied to multiple times. Our concerns were of no matter. It's not just one person. I guarantee you if your club came to the court and ran the idea by any of us, we would have turned down any thought of such a drastic change. That is why it was "kept in the dark". It is us members that pay to keep your gym open. The future new member who is paying at least $220 dollars a month for the horrible quality towels, which were once good. The ones, mind you that are empty many many times. Amongst other things that you claim is servicing us. The services that you think people want. You can give us any excuse under the sun that you try to pass of as reason, but the fact of the matter is we see with our own eyes how empty those pickle ball courts are many times. We know how packed the Basketball court is now in comparison. The lights go off on the other side from lack of use. Come on. Serving all the members is a great thing. You failed at the attempt, because all are NOT being serviced the right way. You want signatures ? I'll start gathering. Not a problem. A place like this should be deserving of 5 stars. Smh, Not 3 on yelp. The proof is in the pudding.

Rose G.

Yelp
We've been members since they opened. It used to feel like a resort. Now, it feels like a NYC public pool. The outdoor area is disgusting, the entitled population that attends leaves trash everywhere, and it's taken a nose dive. We feel that our time here is up. The fees are outrageous for filth.

Amanda B.

Yelp
This gym has gone way down since Kenny took over. The facility is dirty and nothing is being done about it except increasing prices. It's a waste trying to speak to Kenny because he stands with a dumb look on his face as if he is clueless but clearly he is not, he is just concerned about raising fees. Something needs to be done about this new manager because what should be a "resort" style setting clearly feels like a run down public gym and pool. Do not think this is fair to members who pay sometimes almost 500 a month in dues. Garden city needs to be operated in a more professional manner, majority of the staff walks around with a nasty attitude, god forbid you ask a question, they are either clueless or just plain rude!

Yelp
It's all about Eve! Love Life Time Athletic but this revue is about one of the very special staff at the Life Time Cafe! Her name is Eve. My wife and I met Eve last year shortly after she joined Life Time's staff. She served as our hostess and was fantastic in every way. A wonderful engaging personality but also quite natural in the way she meshes her warm, friendly manner while at the same time serving us with accuracy and speed. And she remembers names, including ours and the first time she met us. I say that because I had not seen Eve for a considerable time. And lo and behold she remembered my name and my wife's and recounted how we first met and what we ordered. Pretty remarkable! Eve is a keeper!.....Frank.

Yelp
I'm loving this place. At first it took getting used to so many bodies machines movement in all directions. The spaces are ginormous, plenty equipment in differ the stations on thee floors of pure fitness tools. Their yoga pilates space is wonderful with good teachers that offer a studio peaceful space for mindful body movement. Their pools are awesome with dedicated lap pool and common area pool. Plenty of focused life guards and towels and equipment to make it safe and fun. HOWEVER The chlorine content is so high however that I smelled like chlorine up to three showers/three days later and still a faint residue smell remained. It's a shame to swim for fitness health in a soup of chemicals. The jacuzzis the same. In fact I remained only a short time until my eyes felt they were burning. Showering is a pleasure and the lockers have their own combos, awesome hair dryers, swabs, shampoo rinse and body lotion hair spray, while fully equipped with plenty towels (some people grab 4 at a time which makes me wonder how much we are damaging the eco system washing gum towels alone :/). There is an attendant if you forget your combo or it won't open, which seems happens. There is an awesome spa/salon and I've hooked into two of the best techs I've had. Bethany and Jamie are really pros and so pleasant to chat with. An eatery of fast good food makes this a one stop spot to enjoy yourself for hours. Instead of the mall! They offer really yummy eats that are organic and fresh while also offering "healthy" snacks and smoothies/shakes. They even accommodate your dietary taste needs and I may have started a trend of Collagen/Peptides in your Coffee after requesting it one morning when I signed up. The staff are really helpful cheery and pumped on fitness endorphins and take every opp to upsell you at every chance.

Gurnek S.

Yelp
This gym had everything until, they decided to rip half of the basketball courts space to place pickleball courts which majority of the members do not use. Now, the basketball courts have huge lines in order to play, and no courts are available just to shootaround. This is very frustrating that they decided to make such a drastic change without thinking about their basketball community. Before the switch, they had allocation time for pickleball. That worked out fine. Even if they keep the pickleball court, they didnt need to TAKE OFF the basketball rims on that side. Very poor management deicision..

Gaby D.

Yelp
I've been a member of Life Time on and off for a few years. Mostly go to the Garden City site and it's going downhill The weights for barbells have to be locked up and the pilate balls that says enough about the clientele. I will be cancelling within the next 2 weeks to find a better club.

Michael C.

Yelp
My rating is based mostly on the cost of membership. It's a very nice club. But the dues kept going up and up. When my dues were increased from $179/m to $229/m over a short period of time, it was just too much for me. It all comes down to how often you use the club facilities and amenities. On the plus side, the indoor pools are very nice, plenty of towels everywhere, the exercise equipment is top of the line, many different yoga and other classes are offered, no complaints there. But lots of lockers are broken or inoperable, the showers, steam room and spa facilities had frequent problems, and the management's main focus seems to be up-selling add-on products and services to the members. All in all, it's nicer than most other clubs, but it could be better for the money.

Gabrielle E.

Yelp
I've been a member for 6 years. This used to be a high-end club and now seems like the YMCA. The gym is packed and filthy. I lost an item, called 9 times to speak to lost and found, and still haven't received a call back. Very rarely does the front desk pick up the phone. I just looked up these reviews and it's good to know it's not just me. So I just called the front desk and whoever picked up was disgustingly rude. She told me that garbage everywhere seems like "a parental issue" not the gym's problem, and that they're crowded because it's summer, and they're at FULL CAPACITY for the gym. I said I haven't been able to use the family changing room because there's never any available lockers and she said "ok, so what." I asked if they plan on adding additional facilities being that they have additional members and therefore additional money. She said no. Then she said "I don't know what to tell you." I asked for her name and she hung up the phone immediately. Called back twice and of course nobody picked up the phone. My family pays nearly $500/ month and will be finding a new gym after summer.

Yelp
This review is specifically directed at the Lifetime Athletic Gym in Garden City, NY. When I first joined several years ago it was spectacular. However, the facility has become rundown and dirty and some equipment is not working for months on end and not being fixed despite some complaints. I'm giving it one star because I am annoyed that I am just being given lip service on my past complaints or no response at all. Nothing worse than that.. Treadmills either do not work at all, or they malfunction while you are in the middle of your workout. You have to hope to get a working unit when you arrive for your workout. Regulars should know in advance which ones to choose so they won't have problems arise as they are working out (ie: elevation setting don't work). A Sign have been posted on a treadmill screen for the last 5 months indicating that the machine is not operating and when I spoke to a manager I was told that these units were made in Italy and they are having problems getting parts and trained personnel to fix them. (For some reason the Syosset LT Gym has beautifully operating treadmills and they are clean).. In addition, the womens locker room bathrooms stalls are not kept clean. The metal walls inside the stalls look as if dirty water was sprayed on them - (like someone sprayed a diluted coke soda on the walls and left the drip marks behind.) Plus the stall door locks are falling loose. Since the locks on the locker room doors do not always function properly, on occasion one must call on the staff to open them for you. Unlike in the Syosset facility, at Garden City they just open the locker that you claim is yours without checking your ID or even describing what is inside before they give you access. Prior to the Syosset locker room being renovated, if there was a problem with the locker not opening, they made you sign a register to indicate who was claiming the contents of the locker before they opened it for you. I see no reason, at the very least, why the bathroom stalls cannot be kept clean even if they are not in the best maintenance. And that means more than just cleaning the toilet bowl. Clean the stalls walls, the floor etc. Would love to know that someone is planning a renovation of the locker room or at least going to examine the locks on the storage cubbies and have them all fixed. Yes, that means going through each of them one by one to determine their status. Plus, what's the excuse for the treadmill maintenance. I don't buy the story that they cannot be fixed and serviced properly because the manufacturer is in Italy. If that was the case, our membership fee should be reduced or Syosset should be having the same problems, right???? I would like to see Garden City return to what it once was. In the meantime I and other members I have spoken to are going more frequently to Syosset. Management know this.. people are talking about the decline of Garden City. Don't think we don't notice. You should do something before this gets escalated to the Corporate level.

Yelp
Zero stars if i could. Had a spa appointment and decided to make a day of working out and swimming. Thank god i am a not a member here. I cannot imagine anyone paying to be here. The men's locker rooms are kinda dirty. Hair and dust bunnies roaming freely, towels weren't very well stocked when i was there. The showers are kinda grimy, crud around the handles of the doors, and water knobs. The sauna had a stale sweat smell to it and the cedar was stained with it. The steam room STANK. I can only imagine the eco system living in there. Around the leg press/ free weight area is the unmistakable aroma of dead rodent behind a wall. Some of the machine's like leg curl and extension are so worn the padding is useless making any kind of movement under load a painful experience. In the pool there was a bandaid. Such fun. Jacuzzi was nice but had the usual chlorine aroma. I dont really know what kind of zoo like atmosphere you will experience in the summer when young folks are home from college and parents bring their young children to use the pools. The spa was clean as one should expect and my therapist was professional and well practiced. Overall, staff are friendly and seem to be well trained and clearly do the best with what they can. Its the facility that falls short and doesn't meet the price point.

Yelp
This review is for the garden city location. Has gone downhill. Overcrowded. Now, they decided to turn the ventilation down, unacceptable. This is not how a lifetime should be. Machines are not being fixed. I am not going to go on a whole long review. Garden city knows what the issues are. Last straw for me is the ventilation being turned off. Syosset is not like this, will drive the extra 15 mins

Yelp
Membership will go up insane and Kayla from the front desk is a bitch, pardon my language. I was there at 5:30am with my 60 year old mother. I was told my guest passes were up and If I wanted to bring her in it would cost us $75. She told me she couldn't make an exception and was very rude and cold in her approach. I HIGHLY recommend going to a different gym. She could've said the exact same thing in a completely different way. My mother even questioned if it was because we are Hispanic. On top of that they charged my brother 3 months of membership AFTER he cancelled his membership and refused to give him a refund after it was clearly a miscommunication.

Yelp
I was a lifetime member before kids and always went to Syosset. Now I rejoined and go half of my time to Syosset and garden city. Syosset revamped and is wonderful. can't really say the same for garden city. The women's locker room... I honestly don't think there are that many women in the building but like 70% of all lockers are always locked. I don't get why? And then there are times when like some lockers and locked so nobody can use it. Why is nobody fixing these situations when you know it's peak time at the gym. The showers.. water pressure is meh and somehow I always find hair... not mine but someone's hair somewhere around the shower. And why is there like 6 hairdryers in the locker room. All these women have hair! Lol The workout area... it's not as spacious considering what you are paying for. It has all the amenities... but someone is always using the machines hahaha. Treadmill... yeah there is always a broken one or two on the floor. Don't know when it will be fixed but doesn't seem like it's going to be soon. The weights are there when you need em and you will find them where you would expect em to be. Parking... always packed... Staff... great! Seem nice and helpful. Haven't had any bad encounters with anyone who works here. Wish corporate would update this facility but the people seem friendly

Yelp
This place is almost like a mall. It has a beauty salon, spa services, separate bathrooms/changing rooms for families, heated pools, hot yoga, Pilates, circuit training, spin classes, boot camp classes, pretty much everything you can think of ! I enjoy the steam room and jacuzzi..you can literally spend an entire day here working out and then relaxing. There is also a cafe and the food is not expensive. Membership is a bit pricey. There is a daycare center for kids and there are classes for kids. So if you're a parent this is a great place because you can drop your kid off at the daycare center and get a workout. Things to keep in mind - you need to buy a membership for kids. Pilates reformer classes and boot camp classes are extra. The free classes (except for barre and dance classes) are packed. I took a hot yoga class and it was fine. However the circuit training classes were so full I had a hard time moving around. If you're plan is to use machines, do yoga, swim and in the morning or late evening then you are fine. The pool on the weekends is full of kids after like 10 AM. If you plan to swim, go early in the morning or else you'll have kids swimming in your lane. Unfortunately the lifeguards are pretty much useless. They don't keep kids out of the swimming lanes and parents don't look after their kids. It's really annoying.

Yelp
We were charged $300 for a month we didn't use, the membership was put on hold and we were paying to have it as such for several months Management here is a complete joke. Don't waste your time or hard earned money here. Equinox is even nicer and there are many other gyms in the area. Don't settle for being treated with disrespect

Yelp
I am upset because LifeTime is rasiing my monthly memebrship fee from $199 to $219. Hefty! And they said there was no negotiation when I spoke to a manager yesterday. Today I was speaking to other members and learned that someone had negotiated to keep their monthly fee at $170! Also - the contract requires 30 days' notice for cancellation, but LifeTime can raise rates with NO NOTICE. For me, this fee is not worth it, as I only use the pool and locker room. I will be looking into New York Sports Club in White Plains when their pool reopens. The monthly fee is much more reasonable.

Yelp
I love this gym it's family oriented. Don't have to worry about your things going missing. The atmosphere is amazing very clean and is getting cleaned daily. They provide you with everything the only thing I recommend you bringing is slippers and deodorant so you can shower comfortable. Now for the bad it's ONLY 1 FULL basketball court. No one even plays Pickel ball just a waste of space. People look at you funny like you don't belong there when we both paying over priced fees for a gym. I gave 3 stars instead of 2 because the customer service is fantastic when they want it to be.

Yelp
I am a member of Renew Active thru United Health, which means I am entitled to a free membership with restrictions. However, I go today to sign up and I'm told there is a wait list for Renew Active members. But if I would like to upgrade my membership to Lifetime Signature at a discounted rate of 150.00 per month there is no wait list. So if I spend $150.00 per month I'm in if not I'll just have to wait till someone cancels their membership. I was told this policy only went into effect today. With so many gyms and so many available on Renew Active I will join a different gym.

Yelp
We've been members of Lifetime for awhile. Generally, we have been happy there. My children have attended swim classes there since they were 2 and I really enjoy the swim teachers and pool facilities. We also like the Kid club and even hosted a birthday party there (which was perfect!). One very strong word of warning though- the lifeguards are horrible. There have been multiple times when we have seen lifeguards on duty in the indoor pool watching their phone instead of the water. One time, we even saw a lifeguard with an earbud in watching TikTok. We took a picture and immediately tried to report her but there was no manager on duty. We told the front desk instead and they assured they would do something about it. If you bring your small children to the pool, just be warned that you have to watch them. Do not rely on the life guards. I haven't had an issue with the outdoor pool life guards, but the indoor ones not good. You are supposed to be in the pool with your child if they can't swim but they also allow parents to blatantly ignore the rule.

Yelp
This place has been run amuck. It's a mess. the people do not seem to care whatsoever. The General Manager Kenny or Kevin is terrible. Absolutely terrible. Speaking to him is equivalent to speaking to a wall. He is either frazzled or completely lost when discussing legitimate concerns. The environment has changed and it saddens me because at one point this place was a haven. Decent service should never be too much to ask for!

Yelp
I joined this gym back in 2019 and I had very much enjoyed its amenities, my comments although are targeted directly at the Garden City location - in that time since joining I picked up playing pickleball which has now become a major part of the community there however , the staff have egged players into this competitive frienzy - if pickleball is your reason for joining I advise you look elsewhere - members will ask your skill level and close you out - it's something the staff has very much made and have no intention of changing - the pool and equipment are very well maintained it's just a very cold and unfriendly gym that's just become more cold and isolating - save your money and look elsewhere

Yelp
Gym is great but the fees keep increase. Wish they would use that money to install a cold plunge instead of those massage chairs .......

Yelp
This is THE best gym EVER!! I'm motivated to come here and work our for at least 3 hours. And after a hard session, I can jump into the pool then hot tub to relax my muscles a bit. The hot tub is definitely the game changer for me as I tend to get bad muscle cramps. I didn't think that I'd actually pay this much just to go to the gym...but it's well worth the money to come here. I've been in and out of many gyms from LA Fitness, UFC and Blink Fitness--this gym can't be compared to any other! Nothing comes close! The services, the amenities, the programs, machines, parking, the cleanliness, even the patrons! It is on the expensive side...but again, it's worth it. It's even kid friendly. Most importantly, the hours don't suck. I used to dreaddddd going to the gym. But i definitely look forward to it these days. If one can afford it, I do highly recommend coming here!

Yelp
wonderful place, not crowded, convenient late hours for the hard working people! I used to need a suit case to carry all the stuff to a gym, life time changed that, they have towels, shampoo lotion even shaving cream. thanks a lot!

Yelp
my family and I have been members of lifetime garden city for 7+ years, and sadly this gym has just fallen off the proverbial cliff in the last 2 years. ever since the former GM edwin left, and was replaced by the former training manager Kenny this place just keeps getting worse and worse! Under Edwins leadership this gym was very clean, members had some etiquette, rules actually existed (and were followed), locker rooms/facilities were well maintained, members were held accountable for their (and their guests) behavior, constructive criticism was welcomed and changes that needed to be made to improve the overall club experience were actually made! That's what happens when a general manager you know....MANAGES. Kenny, however, does none of those things, yet we've been hit with two membership price increase under his regime. We mentioned this to him and he said there is nothing that can be done, however I know for a fact other families WHO JOINED AFTER US SOMEHOW PAY LESS My husband and I have even mentioned this and some of our other gripes about the deteriorating conditions (and seemingly simple fixes) of the club in casual conversations to various staff members in different departments throughout the gym we have come to know over our 7 years at LT Garden City, like the kids club, lifeguards, locker room attendants, etc. and without mentioning those employees names they all give the same feedback, just drive the extra 15 minutes and go to the Syosset location because their hands are tied, and that the new Manager Kenny has no clue what he is doing and that he should never have been promoted to GM. It's honestly astounding how much better the Syosset location seems to be run in our few visits there. Ever since Kenny took over the only thing that has gone up are my membership dues. Ever single other aspect of the club has gotten worse. Many other members and myself have Mentioned this to Kenny many times over, and absolutely nothing ever gets done! he even thanked me for bringing some of these complaints to his attention, as if this was the first time he was learning about the condition of as he put it "his club". Um excuse me, but it's not your club Kenny, the club is shared by all the PAYING members! And again ever since you took over "your club" every single aspect of it has gotten worse. The women's locker room is disgusting, many lockers don't work, the women's sauna is always out of order, hair, towels and dirt are everywhere. Now the showers even have those little flies using all about in them. Mentioned to Kenny, even wrote email to corporate, and again nothing ever gets done. The gym floor has become an LA fitness, overcrowded, weights everywhere except on the racks, dirty mats, trainers constantly hitting on the pretty ladies, trainers using 3 machines at a time to train their clients, dirty Towels everywhere, etc. it would also be nice to have an actual cleaning service clean the free Weights/squat rack/machine area of the gym instead of trainers. Mentioned this to the new training manager as well, and he didn't even look up for his phone, just said thanks we're working on it. Never once have I seen him approach any member about following the rules, and maintaining good gym etiquette. The pool area is even worse, just Complete chaos in there. no system of organization whatsoever. Again mentioned to Kenny that the lap lanes should be for people actually SWIMMING LAPS, and leisure pool for all other leisure activities like walking, floating or children playing. and this review is before the annual summer pool season sh#*$ show begins, when they allow 1000's of "new pool members" to join (without adding any additional staff, machines, chairs, towels, lockers, etc. to service the increase in members...essentially ruining the gym going experience for us year round members! To be fair, in any club that gets the foot traffic every day that this gym gets, there are going to be Machines that break, things that go awry, and a few "rotten egg " gym members with no etiquette or regard for others. But also, to be fair, we have been to the syosset location a few times in the Last two years and it's Astounding how much better the experience is over there. it's been almost two years since Edwin left, and ask any long time member, and they'll tell you the same thing about new management and the conditions and experience of the club under Kenny....straight downhill Sadly. Hopefully corporate will read this and actually make some changes in personnel. We truly believe that a new, more suitable GM would be able to restore this club to its former glory days under Edwin. My family and I have honestly tried to give new management the benefit of the doubt, and some time to make some changes because change is hard, but this is now the second time in less than two years my family membership has had price increases and have Been left with far inferior club.

Yelp
Before the pandemic the yoga studio at lifetime used to have such a strong community. It has not been able to rebuild its infrastructure since the pandemic. I wonder what is going on? They only have a few senior instructors teaching and the schedule hours are not full. I wish the atmosphere could be like it was before pandemic. Classes were packed, there was a lot of diversity in the class schedule to pick from and instructors were more senior and work together, not independently as they do now.

Yelp
Who is running this place!!! Corporate needs to step in!! Going bad on a daily basis!!!! Everyday another email with things closing!! Services staff all lacking!! Heads should roll!! Luxury prices for subpar services!!! Don't join!!

Yelp
So gross someone took a bowel movement in the pool on the inside and on the outdoor pool. It's not the first time this is happened to your locker room is filthy. Disgusting towels all over the place. No clean towels just absolutely disgustingly filthy gross

Yelp
Went to this gym for years and absolutely loved it. They recently started letting students in the gym for super cheap while increasing our memberships by almost a third. I appreciate the thought of it but we pay a crazy amount for this gym to get away from the kids filming themselves in the gym and sitting on one piece of equipment for over an hour while staring at their phones. Made it so you get the same exact experience in any other gym so why pay 6 times the amount anymore. The final straw was trying to workout on the stair master and watching 3 girls film each other for no more than 15 seconds on a piece of cardio equipment going as hard as they could then jumping to the next and doing the same over and over again. A once amazing gym that still has incredible potential that is catering to young kids with no gym etiquette.

Yelp
I liked this gym during Covid. It was Covid clean. Now I'm paying $249 a month with senior discount. It went up $50 since Covid, last year. I'm paying more for a dirty gym. The pool is not clean (I swim with goggles). The restrooms are not clean, floors, etc. Such a shame. This high end gym is not living up to expectations.
