3 Best Day Trips from Sydney | Condé Nast Traveler

"Situated on the edge of a dramatic escarpment above Jamison Valley, Lilianfels Resort & Spa has one of—if not the—best vantage points from which to appreciate the Blue Mountains’ natural charms. It's also just a short stroll from Katoomba’s Echo Point and iconic rock stacks The Three Sisters. Traditionalists will appreciate the genteel decor in the hotel’s 89 guest rooms and suites, which team Wedgwood wallpaper in pink, lilac, or green with pretty patterned curtains and canopies over wrought-iron—though make sure to opt for a room with a view of the valley below. That's something to wake up to." - Sophie Davies

Lilianfels Resort and Spa, Blue Mountains, NSW - Explore & Book

"Old world chic perched on the edge of the National Park, Lilianfels combines traditional accommodation with a relaxed atmosphere that spells 'leave your worries at the door'. Lilianfels started as the Victorian home of then Chief Justice of New South Wales, Sir Frederick Darley, and continues its grand country house tradition today as a Luxury Collection Resort. It's all picnics on clifftops and high tea at three for cashed up weekenders escaping urban Sydney, and international guests doing their Australian 'tour'. Enter via a gravelled driveway past the swanky pool begging for a cocktail. There's a Great Gatsby feel to the open plan salon with grand piano, fireplaces, French doors, terrace and Victorian couches to lose yourself in. A distinctly retro indoor swimming pool with traditional wide striped towels and glass conservatory, plus a full-sized billiard table and a tennis court, complete the historical picture. There are two acres of landscaped gardens, and vast bathrooms with deep vanity sinks in each of the gracious bedrooms. Don't overlook the award-winning cuisine at Darley’s restaurant, nor the seriously seductive spa tucked away in the basement of pampering. Highs Service, service, service - friendly, impeccable and discreet Proximity to the Three Sisters rock formations and a plethora of bush walking tracks Darley’s restaurant has won repeated "chef's hats" - Sydney's equivalent of a Michelin star We loved our four handed poultice massage treatment in the spa Lows The very old-fashioned country house décor is not for everybody, and some guests mention that it is starting to look a bit tired It's not absolute clifftop - a road divides it from the national park, but you can easily walk to the public viewpoint Daytrippers break the spell when showing up for high tea and a look-see At 85 rooms, it's larger and better known than most of our chosen hotels" - Rachael Oakes-Ash

Lilianfels Blue Mountains (Blue Mountains, New South Wales) Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Ninety minutes’ drive from Sydney is Lilianfels Blue Mountains, one of Australia’s most unique lodgings. Equal parts charming country house and elegantly modern boutique hotel, Lilianfels begins with a spectacular location, at a cliff’s edge overlooking the Jamison Valley, and alongside the towering peaks of the Three Sisters." - Tablet Hotels

We have been coming to Lilianfels since 2001. Since being bought by the GIC the government of Singapore through some local investment company the hotel has been seriously downgraded. We had 3 rooms of which 2 of the rooms the aircon did not work- turning them into 2 stars and all the little special things like soft sheets gone. Areas with plastic up I guess for some changes The lounge once a prime area to hang out with the family has been stolen by plates set around leaving no where for the family to meet up. The billiard room has been stolen for another function space taking away the 2nd area families could gather and enjoy the property. A chilly evening and finally got one of the 2 fireplaces to work (since they realised we were going to drink champagne and other things they allowed us to stay). The bar drinks obviously made by someone not an experienced bar tender. Tge milk shakes once amazing now seems a cheep ice cream with cheap syrup. We had Dinner at Darleys $275 per person and there was not a person that was experienced waiter serving that could you explain the menu etc- nice room but not even 3 star dining experience- and certainly not what we had come to expect at Darleys. Yes not very happy to see an iconic Sydney venue taken over by an Asian government and not keep the local charm we had come to expect here in the blue mountains. We decided to go outside the hotel to local town Leura for breakfast- best decision we made. So the basic hotel is good but plan your eating and lounging out of the hotel. I suggest you look for a new spot until the hotel is sold to local owners again.

This place LilianFAILS on so many levels. We came here for our honeymoon and wish we had stayed in the city longer, where we had a true five star experience. The grounds, the rooms, the spa, the dining scene, the service- not even close to five stars. When we arrived, no one came out to greet us or help with our bags. Upon checking into our room, we found a dirty used floss picker left in the shower. The pool scene is atrocious. There are no loungers due to the renovations. The only seating by the pool is hard, uncomfortable chairs (see photo). No side tables to put drinks on, so we had to put our drinks on the rusted ground (see photo). No poolside service for food/drink- you must go inside the restaurant to order. We laid towels on the turf grass to soak up some sun, and we were surrounded by duck poop (see photos). I asked an employee to move an umbrella near us, and he was walking through the duck poop to set up our umbrella. Never returned to clean up the poop. The indoor pool had used, wet towels all over the place. On our second day we returned from an outdoor hike and we were quite thirsty. We asked front desk staff for water and they looked at us like we were crazy. They told us our only option was to purchase a large glass bottle of sparkling or still water, or to have our used plastic water bottles from the night before from the room (only 2 provided per room) refilled using sink water. To call yourselves a five star resort and not have a water dispenser or water bottles at the ready for guests is astonishing, especially considering the proximity to many outdoor activities. We left our room at 6 am for the hike and put the “service please” sign on our door. We returned around noon and the room had still not been serviced. When it was serviced, the room was not actually cleaned. The sink area was still visibly dirty, but the towels had been swapped out and the bed made. I can appreciate the charm of an old hotel, but the hotel in general was just dirty. The lamp shades were stained, the ironing board was stained, our desk chair was stained, the carpet in the elevators was dirty, and the couches in the lounge were dirty (see photo- crumbs everywhere). There is no turn down service, which is something you typically expect at a “five star resort.” The staff seem miserable, and almost like they are avoiding eye contact with you because they do not want to do anything above and beyond to make you feel welcomed or comfortable. In three days we were never once asked how our stay was going, if we were celebrating anything, nothing like that. Again no effort to be exceptional in any aspect. The food at The Lounge was decent- certainly nothing to rave about- and the service was subpar. The breakfast was ok… pastries were small and scarce, overall food options limited. Food and service at Miss Lilian were the highlight of our stay. Last, we had hoped to sleep in on our final morning but we were woken up by the renovation construction at the crack of dawn. Our travel agent reached out to the hotel yesterday to make them aware of these issues, yet at check-out nothing was done to rectify the situation.

I wish we had read some of the Google reviews before booking this hotel. My daughter booked a studio apartment as a special treat for our last night in NSW. 5 star it is definitely not. While our room was spacious, the furniture and soft furnishings are dated. Bed linen has definitely seen better days. Bedside tables were stained and scratched. There was a long hair on a pillow as well as hair, including pubic hair and a dead cockroach in the bathroom. Breakfast was ordinary without much variety. Available fruit was kiwi fruit and passion fruit cut in half. The staff were polite and friendly, especially Bryant at Reception. Thank you Bryant. For the price, the place is a disgraceful ripoff. We would have had a better experience at a Comfort Inn and paid a lot less. It was a very disappointing end to our time in NSW.

This isn't a five star hotel. We spent a small fortune to splurge on this hotel for 2 nights and we left disappointed. The rooms are dated, the bath was tiny to the point a couples bath was a horrible experience, and the service was meh. It turns out there were a lot of renovations going on whilst we were there. The only notification we had of this going on was a small paragraph AFTER we booked that exciting works were underway and a small number of rooms were effected. Well turns out we didn't have access to the health centre, nor to play billiards, Darleys restaurant (which is where we planned to spend our 10yr anniversary dinner) and when we went to book into the day spa we were booked into another hotel 18mins away because suprise, that was also closed. No complimentary taxi was provided to us either to make the journey. Disgusting. Some other people staying there complained they were woken by drilling above their room at 7.30am as well! There was duck poo all around the outdoor pool and no deck chairs around to relax, just uncomfortable seats. The location of Lilianfels however is amazing and close to some beautiful, easy walks with incredible views. Will we go back? To Katoomba yes, but not Lilianfels based on this experience.

My parents are visiting from the UK and I thought it would be a lovely treat to take them to Lilianfels to celebrate my 50th birthday. We drove 1.5 hours to have high tea which is quite pricey at $70pp but I wanted to spoil them. The staff were lovely, the Lounge looked great decorated for Christmas and the food was nice. However, sadly the experience was marred by the constant noise of a pressure washer and leaf blower (workman cleaning the tiles) just outside the window for the entire time we were there. Had we been advised (when booking a few days ago) that this work was scheduled for today, we would have chosen another day.

We recently stayed at Lilianfels Blue Mountains with high expectations, having chosen the hotel based on glowing recommendations from friends and online reviews. Unfortunately, our experience did not live up to the advertised standard and left us very disappointed. The room itself was not as described — it had a noticeable damp, musty smell which was quite unpleasant and gave the impression of poor ventilation or deeper maintenance issues. The quality of the linen was below expectations for a hotel of this calibre, and the pillows provided were flat and uncomfortable — not what you’d expect from a premium property charging luxury rates. While we were aware that renovations were underway, nothing prepared us for the extent of the disruption. Loud construction noises, including hammer drills, echoed throughout the hotel for hours during the day. This made it difficult to relax or enjoy any downtime in our room. Clear communication about the scale and impact of the renovations would have been appreciated before booking. Overall, for the price paid, the experience fell far short of expectations. It's disappointing that such a well-regarded property did not meet even basic standards of comfort and peace. We hope management takes this feedback seriously and improves transparency for future guests.

Location is great, staff are excellent . We left behind some things and front desk organised delivery very quickly. Unfortunately, the property feels too old, too worn, and simply too tired to justify its rating. The rooms and bathrooms show clear signs of age — dated furnishings, scuffed surfaces, and a general lack of freshness. Common areas also look worn, and what should feel luxurious instead feels neglected. Even though it carries a 5-star label, the atmosphere doesn’t match the standard you’d expect. We stayed from Sunday toMonday and there was no live music at the bar area (o(y on Saturdays). The worst was the swimming pool area - all furniture was rotten and looked disgusting, the sauna is so old that it is scary to sit in , the temperature in sauna and steam is too low - you are not getting any benefits from using it .

I visited the spa today and was made to feel very welcome. ||Trudy at check in was clear with her directions as to where to go etc., and had a lovely cheerful manner. ||My therapist, Vanessa, was delightful and a real master of the art of massage. She was careful to ensure the pressure was appropriate in different areas. ||The massage achieved its objective, with total relaxation accomplished. ||Well worth a visit. I’ll certainly be booking in again when next visiting the area. ||Thanks you spa staff for ensuring a wonderful experience. It’s clear that you understand the importance of customer satisfaction.
