Want to See the Northern Lights Without the Crowds? Visit One of These Private Island Retreats in Norway | Vogue

"On the wave‑battered islet of Midtøyni just off Norway’s west coast, going off‑grid doesn’t mean going without—especially when the Northern Lights dip south. Check into the Main House’s trio of rooms or claim the standalone Boat House and you’ll find a beautifully crafted toolkit for slow living: a herb‑infused sauna built from shoreline stones, an outdoor pool for cold plunges, and a self‑serve shop curated by chef Antje de Vries, stocked with natural wines and plant‑based ingredients ready for your pan. Original timber has been meticulously restored, mattresses are stuffed with local seaweed, and gardens fed by compost and rainwater supply most of what Antje cooks over the Aga and serves in the wood‑paneled dining room. Days drift between kayaking, foraging walks and seaweed hunts, and the island’s popular Kelp Club suppers where locals and guests trade stories over season‑led plates—set against fjord‑framed horizons that glow at night—while 360‑degree sea‑to‑sky vistas offer wide‑open viewing territory in a year of unusually far‑south aurora." - Chloe Frost-Smith

"Fringed by fjords along Norway’s west coast, sustainable-star Lilløy Lindenberg’s private island setting restores a child-like sense of wonder. You can settle down in one of the Main House’s three rooms or in the standalone, water-watching Boat House, or book the isle in its entirety. "Lilløy Lindenberg is, in a literal sense, a private island hotel, but it’s at once less extravagant and more memorable than the phrase might imply. This is no luxury resort, but a wild, rocky island in the North Sea, home to little more than a beautifully restored farmhouse and a boat launch — the latter a crucial part of the experience, as the final ten-minute stretch of your journey will take place by sea." - Tablet Hotels

This experience was needed after a stressful exam week, offering a breath of fresh air and an intimate setting. I felt a great sense of peace. The home is beautifully furnished and the island is worth exploring. The views are calming and the nearby islands can also be further explored through kayaking. I look forwards to returning!

Amazingly cozy place. All the interior design gives such a relaxing atmosphere perfect for a getaway with people that you love to spend time with! On the other hand there are also adventurous things you can do around the island like go kayaking and hiking. Plus they have amazing bathrobes hahahaha. Truly special experience, I would highly recommend ;)

Lilløy Lindenberg is definitely one of a kind. My stay was a unique and memorable experience. I enjoyed every aspect of it. The house has a very warm and cozy atmosphere with thoughtful attention to detail throughout. I especially loved spending time by the sun beds and relaxing in the sauna. The commitment to a fully vegan lifestyle was also really inspiring and added something extra special to the stay. Special thanks to the lovely crew, they were so kind and welcoming.

I have returned recharged and relaxed after 4 wonderful days in Lilløy Lindenburg. Such a cozy house, with beautiful decor and the most comfortable beds. Evening saunas looking out to sea and exhilarating late night swimming in the sea. Thankfully good quality wetsuits were available. A real treat was a massage in the beautiful boat house - pure luxury. The private chefs, Antje and Peter, made the most delicious food and all vegan. Many dishes using different types of kelp that had been harvested by hand from around the island. As a non-vegan I didn’t miss meat in the slightest. The team looked after us so well and we very much hope to return in the future.
