Unfortunately the festive feast did not meet my expectations. I'm very shocked the reviews of this restaurant are high, I don't know if it was bad luck or a bad day in the kitchen.
Oysters were standard, kingfish ceviche was too sweet and I was shocked they served me stale sweet potato chips. The bread from the chicken katsu sando was dry, I felt like I was eating a dry chicken sandwich with hardly enough sauce. Beef tartar rice cake was good. Wagyu gyoza was terrible, the meat was soggy inside, the dumpling dough was uncooked and sauce was terrible. Everything just tasted bitter. I was accidentally served lamb sausage bao buns, which they let us have on the house. Even this tasted like a standard bunnings sausage sizzle in a bao bun. The cauliflower was soggy. Meat saam was good, not enough veg for 3 people mostly made up of pea shoots, rice was ok too. Halo dessert consisted mostly of ice, there wasn't enough icecream for 3 people. The positive was the rice and beef tartare, even so it didn't blow my socks off. This is my attempt at optimism. The customer service was excellent, however at the end of the day I'm paying for food and it makes a big part of my review.
A note for future diners, because this is an indoor outdoor restaurant I wouldn't come here on a very hot day as there's only fans, no air-con.
The challenge with Lilymu is that it tries to be pan-asian, they lack fundamental skill in balancing flavours from salty, sweet, sour and umami. An array of asian ingredients are listed but not well executed and it ended up leaning towards only one flavour profile. You can definitely get better quality food elsewhere in Sydney especially at this price.
