The 15 Best African Safaris to Add to Your Bucket List | Vogue

"Perched atop a dramatic escarpment in Ethiopia’s Simien Mountains National Park, where jagged mountain peaks meet a verdant valley, Limalimo Lodge is a community-focused project that offers a rare glimpse into the region’s wilderness. With the support of the African Wildlife Foundation, founders and mountain guides Shiferaw Asrat and Meles Yemata opened the lodge in 2016, with a vision of showcasing the beauty of the national park while also benefiting the households and communities within the park boundaries through tourism. The result is a sustainable and low-impact design consisting of 14 rooms made from rammed earth, wood, and thatch, each surrounded by fragrant juniper, olive, and acacia trees. The lodge employs local staff and sources much of its produce from nearby areas, ensuring that the community thrives alongside conservation efforts. With regional residents and experts as your guides, you can enjoy walking treks across cliffs where groups of 200 or more gelada monkeys graze in vast troops, while lammergeiers wheel overhead, dropping bones to crack them on the rocks. If you’re lucky, you can even spot a horned Walia Ibex, Ethiopian wolf, leopard, or hyena." - Michaela Trimble

Remote "eco" lodge with fabulous views. |Good restaurant. Huge rooms in individual bungalows. Nice community rooms with roaring fires. |One shortcoming was the lack of hot water for a shower, apparently as the clouds, rain and/or cold prevented adequate solar heating.|Close to Simien Nat. Park.

After several days of rugged journey from the Danakil Depression and into the Simien Mountains, and feeling a little altitude sickness after our first night of camping in the park, we arrived at Limalimo physically exhausted. From the moment we stepped onto the property, everything shifted. The staff was remarkably accommodating and kind! The lodge itself is stunning. Thoughtfully designed to blend into its natural surroundings, it offers sweeping views of the Simien Mountains and the kind of peace and beauty we waited for to end the journey. The food was excellent, the beds were comfortable and the views from our lodge were beautiful! Limalimo is a sanctuary and we only wish we had stayed longer. It gave us exactly what we needed at the perfect moment, and we left feeling refreshed and reconnected. If you're traveling through the Simiens, don't just pass through—make Limalimo part of your journey. Thank you all very much and we hope to see you again!

Don’t miss this lodge if you are in Debark / Simien Mountains area. The views from the lodge are amazing. Rooms are spacious, clean and have breathtaking views as well. You really feel deep in the nature, with serene surroundings, amazing sunsets and starry nights. The staff is wonderful, so patient, professional and accommodating to our needs. The food is freshly made with love, and by far the best meals I have had in Ethiopia. ( Vegan and vegetarian options too! ) Overall experience: we were feeling at home. |Warmest recommendations.

My wife and I visited for 3 days in September 2024 because of the stunning reviews. We were the only people who stayed there this week. Beautiful environment and nice enough hotel with some good food and some not so good but very limited choices. There was no electricity except from the generator which was run for about 4 hours in the evening. There was NO warm water in our room. We were told that because of the inclement weather, the solar water heaters were not working. Finally, we were told that there was hot water in one of the other vacant rooms so we finally got to take a shower. At US$400 a night, I expect 5 star accommodations. This was about 3 star without electricity or hot water.

I think that the reason we went to the Simien Mountains National Park was the fact that we’d been blown away by images of Limalimo Lodge. The reservation process was very efficient and professional, and our experience there was really fantastic. The lodge’s biggest selling point must certainly be its location. The views are so dramatic and absolutely spectacular. Make sure you get up early at least one morning to admire the sunset. The cabins are nicely spaced out. So, you have your own space. The décor is a little simpler than I had expected, but that actually only adds to the sense of adventure. And the beds are comfortable and the showers work well. We also liked the communal spaces and both breakfasts and dinners were excellent. The service was also impeccable, with a special mention for Julia, who could not have been more pleasant and helpful. My only possible reservation would be the price. We definitely don’t regret having splurged out because our experience at Limalimo was magical. But, a few days later, we spent one night at Gheralta Lodge in the Tigray Region, which was just as marvelous… but three times cheaper.

Limalimo Lodge is the most magical and best lodge in Ethiopia. A two hour drive from Gondar, you arrive at the top of the mountains of this world heritage national park. Enjoy the serenity of the mountains, hike around the lodge or to amazing places like 500m high waterfalls or look out for the wildlife including monkeys, birds, Ibex or klipspringers. The eco-lodge is gorgeous, has the best service ever and serves the most delicious food. After the sunset, when sitting around the campfire at 3000m, you’ll know why you came.

Everything about the lodge was thrilling.||The design of the rooms.||The service was impeccable.||The staff was courteous, well-trained and efficient. The manager was wonderful, catering to all our needs quietly and quickly.||That terrace with the view of the Samiens Mountains was magnificent.||I saw the sunset and the sunrise and both were breathtaking at close to 3000 meters altitude.||The hikes, we had the best possible guide... a calm, knowledgeable, wise, intelligent man.||The mountains were extraordinary.||I imagined a one-week stay to do nothing but take in the beauty of the land and of the hotel.... ||I nearly cried when I had to leave... fortunately, I visited Gondar and its fabulous royal palaces afterwards which made me forget the loss of Limalimo...

Truely beautiful! Nestled on a peak with magnificent senic views on three sides. Very clean and modern with something of a modern ski chalet vibe. In addition to the wonderful design of the lodge, the chalets, the rooms, bathrooms, bed, etc were 4 star level. All of the amenities were wonderful including the fireplace lounge and bar and the gourmet quality food in the dining room. This is a simple hotel on the top of a mountain with spectacular views and the opportunity to travel and see the sights of the park We were on a tour with a different hotel every two nights and if I had a chance, this is the one I would return to. .
