25+ Free Things to Do in Washington, D.C. (Updated 2025)

"I was moved by the stately Lincoln Memorial — reminiscent of ancient Greek temples with a 19-foot, 175-ton statue of Abraham Lincoln and inscriptions of his second inaugural address and the Gettysburg Address on the walls — and appreciated the free 30-minute Ranger Walks every Saturday and Sunday at 1pm." - Matthew Kepnes

The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. is one of the most inspiring and memorable landmarks I have ever visited. The moment you arrive, the scale and presence of the monument immediately capture your attention. Abraham Lincoln’s massive seated statue feels larger than life, not just in size but also in meaning. It is a place that reminds you of the struggles and triumphs that shaped America and the vision of one of its greatest leaders. The memorial’s architecture is stunning, with tall white marble columns surrounding the statue. On the walls, you can find inscriptions of Lincoln’s most famous speeches, including the Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural Address. Reading these words while standing in front of the monument is a powerful experience, filled with history, reflection, and inspiration. From the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the view is simply breathtaking. The Reflecting Pool stretches out gracefully toward the Washington Monument, creating one of the most iconic and photographed scenes in the entire city. Visiting during sunrise or sunset adds a magical glow to the experience and makes it even more unforgettable. What stood out most to me was the peaceful and respectful atmosphere. Visitors from all over the world gather here, and yet there is a shared sense of quiet admiration. It is a place to pause, reflect, and appreciate the values of freedom, unity, and equality that Lincoln dedicated his life to. A must-visit in Washington, D.C., the Lincoln Memorial truly leaves a lasting impression.

This is an impressive memorial with a great view if you dont mind having 300 other people as a part of that view (not much different than all the other tourist spots). Unfortunately the space was occupied with National Guard troops which did not feel like the freedom the My Brothers and I fought for. The monument is also currently having a museum dug underneath so there is unattractive construction equipment 🚜 and supplies all around the building 🚧 If you give them a year or so the mess should be cleaned up 😉

A Powerful Experience with Great People and Stunning Views The Lincoln Memorial is absolutely breathtaking — both in design and in meaning. The architecture is stunning, and the view from the top of the steps looking over the Reflecting Pool and Washington Monument is unforgettable. What made my visit even better was the kindness of the staff. My phone battery died while I was there, and one of the staff members kindly helped me find a power socket to charge it. That small act of help made a big difference — truly shows how respectful and welcoming the people working here are! The whole area is clean, well-kept, and very moving to walk through. Whether you're into history, photography, or just want a peaceful moment, this place is a must-visit. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Highly recommend stopping here — both for the views and the experience

Google
So awesome to see this structure in person. T.v., $5 bill, nor penny do it justice. The sheer size of it is monumental. Good place for it amongst some of the other great monuments of this country! A must see for anyone even mildly interested in history. The reflecting pool, the Washington monument and Capitol in the distance. AMAZING TO SEE!

Google
A great place to honor our former president. You will never understand how big it is until to get to the bottom. The best time to visit is close to sunset when the sky is pretty and you can see the full reflection of the Washington monument with amazing colors in the sky. The addition of the ramp although blocks the view from the front, is a good addition for those with strollers.

Google
You feel something when walking up to this monument. It's obviously beautiful but seeing it up close, the stone work, the detail outside and inside. When you look at Lincoln statue, you feel empowered almost. Then looking out from the direction Lincoln is facing seeing the water and the Washington monument. It's cool. Only thing right now during my visit was the giant ramp during construction, got in the way of a perfect photo from the very front. But still plenty of other areas to get nice pics.

Google
Absolutely magical experience! The cherry blossoms in full bloom around the Lincoln Memorial were breathtaking. It felt like walking through a dream. The atmosphere was festive, peaceful in the early morning, and the views were unforgettable. A must-see if you’re visiting D.C. in the spring!

Leah T.

Google
Coming here was great. My only complaint is the eye sore of a ramp… there was a better way to build it. I believe the disabled should have a chance to see it but not by having them roll up and down that awful looking ramp where it just takes the attention away from The memorial. Please fix this for the memorials sake and the disabled. They shouldn’t have roll up through all that. Either way it was clean and a beautiful experience.

Yelp
A very special place. I am honored to visit this wonderful monument that means so much. Take time to read the Gettysburg address, nice and slow . Afterwards, let your eyes gaze at the bigger than life statue of a man whose impact was tremendous and so kind. Made it inspire others to continue this legacy always.

Yelp
A must see whether you're in the daytime or at night. I honestly loved it at night, but I will say, looking out at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool during the day was unreal. Both times of day are incredible. Be prepared to be slightly winded as you climb up the steps - although there's a ramp (that I believe is only temporarily there) but it's great for accessibility purposes and also a lot of people use it to get up and down.

Yelp
So the hours on Yelp! show this place closes at 11 PM. I know rangers are around until 10 PM on some occasions, but I went at 11:30 and stayed til after midnight, and there were still plenty of people there. In fact, I came late on purpose so I could really appreciate the memorial and get some good photos . . . and was surprised at how many people were still around. Online it says the place is open 24/7 . . . though I can't swear to that. There are captiol/park police around and the area is well-lit, so I didn't feel unsafe all. It also sits across from an impressive view of the national mall, the US capitol, and the Washington monument. It is an imposing, impressive monument. I've always been an amateur historian where Lincoln is concerned . . . I went to Lincoln's cottage while in DC, I've been to his Springfield home, I've been to his tomb, I've been to his childhood home in Hodgenville, KY . . . and on and on. This somber monument was a great place to reflect and tie all of my thoughts on his legacy together. Again, I recommend going either super early in the morning or late, late in the evening, near midnight or after. I got some great pics, but be aware that it's undergoing some renovations for the 250th Independence Day celebration and the elevator is out, so there is a huge, janky ramp leading all the way up on the left side of the memorial. Still majestic and beautiful.

Yelp
The Lincoln Memorial is a powerful and iconic landmark. The statue of Abraham Lincoln and the surrounding views make it a must-visit in Washington, DC. A memorable and historic experience.
google avatar

Doug L.

Yelp
The Lincoln Memorial is currently undergoing renovations which could be finished in time for the 250th Independence Day celebration. This was one of the busier memorials during my visit to DC even with the reconstruction blocking parts of the memorial. A temporary ramp was constructed on the left side of the memorial and most of the right side was closed off behind barriers. Inside two walls were inscribed with Lincoln's speeches from Gettysburg and his second inauguration. The statue of Lincoln towered above and was popular with group and selfie photos. Another popular photo location was on the top stairs looking towards the Washington Monument and the Reflecting Pool. Looking forward to returning after all the renovations are finally completed.

Yelp
As one of the most iconic landmarks in Washington DC, one's visit is not complete without seeing the Lincoln Memorial. Within the Greek temple structure, Lincoln sits prominently, overlooking the amazing view of the Reflecting Pool and Washington Monument. If you're facing him, to the right is his second inaugural address and on the left is his famous Gettysburg Address. I wish I had paid more attention to the pillars; I have since learned there are 36 of them, representing the states of the Union at the time of Lincoln's death. When we arrived mid-morning, the monument was pretty busy. In fact, compared to all other memorials we visited that day, this one was the most lively, with people posing for photos in front of Lincoln and also capturing the view of the Reflecting Pool from outside. It almost feels surreal realizing that you're standing in the same place where MLK gave his "I Have a Dream" speech and where many other Civil Rights events occurred decades ago. Needless to say, the tremendous historical significance and inspiration associated with this memorial are sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone who ascends up its steps. "IN THIS TEMPLE AS IN THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE FOR WHOM HE SAVED THE UNION THE MEMORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN IS ENSHRINED FOREVER"
google avatar

Yelp
The Lincoln Memorial looks like a classic marble Greek temple. The monument is 189.7 x 118.5 ft and is 99 ft tall. It is surrounded by a peristyle of 36 fluted Doric columns, representing the 36 states in the Union when Lincoln died, and 2 columns in-antis at the entrance behind the colonnade. Above the colonnade, inscribed on the frieze, are the names of the 36 states in the Union at the time of Lincoln's death & the dates in which they entered the Union. Daniel Chester French, the scuptor supervised 6 brothers in its 4 yrs construction. The 175 ton statue, carved from Georgia white marble, was shipped in 28 pieces. Pointed out to me was that French possibly used sign language. Lincoln's left hand forms an "A" while the right hand portrays an "L". Next to Lincoln are carved inscriptions from his 2nd inaugural address and Gettysburg Address. Symbolic elements are incorperated in this memorial. The mural by Guerin presents Lincoln's life's principles: Freedom, Liberty, Morality, Justice, & the Law on the south wall; Unity, Fraternity, & Charity on the north. The cypress trees in the background represent eternity. The bronze girders on the ceiling are ornamented with laurel and oak leaves. There is a lot of construction at the memorial because they are building an educational center in the basement. It's noisy, dusty and more cramped than usual.
google avatar

DRichard J.

Yelp
The meaning of the memorial means a lot to me, but the 4 stars is due to how dirty the statue was. I know they can do better.

Yelp
Visiting the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, is always a powerful experience. This was my second time here, and it still fills me with deep emotion. The memorial holds significant personal meaning for me as the location of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s iconic "I Have a Dream" speech and the memorable scene from Forrest Gump where he reunites with Jenny after the Vietnam War. The Lincoln Memorial is a tribute to Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, and his legacy of unity and freedom. Completed in 1922, the memorial features a stunning 19-foot marble statue of Lincoln seated, surrounded by inscriptions of two of his most famous speeches, the Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Address. The structure itself is designed in the form of a Greek Doric temple, with 36 columns representing the states in the Union at the time of Lincoln's death. Overall, the Lincoln Memorial is a must-visit for anyone in Washington, DC. Its historical significance and emotional impact make it an unforgettable experience.

Yelp
Beautiful memorial for an amazing man. Looks great day or night. A bit difficult to walk the memorials and the buses are variable.

Yelp
Here Today! It's always an honor to visit Lincoln Memorial when I charter to D.C. It's an honor to pay my respects to those that have served and died for our country, I look at the many burial sites and see our men and women on the streets and I just think they was in true battle, killing with their bare hands, shooting the enemy, stabbing WATEVA it took so we can sleep in peace. So many people from other countries want to come to the land of freedom, where they will be respected as people? No fear to walk the streets. The things they have seen and done...God thank you for all the men and women who have served our country proudly. Have yall ever had a conversation with soldiers of the Vietnam War? Thank a Vet! Here Today. There Tomorrow.

Yelp
Sadly, the Lincoln Memorial was under construction when we visited, but it was still a great experience. I would love to visit again when I have more time to read and pay close attention.

Yelp
My favorite of all the DC memorials. I've had the opportunity to spend a few summers in DC and strolling through the monuments is always a must! Lincoln is a special one because of how grand it is. It isn't uncommon to hear of a proposal taking place at the top with the stunning views of the Washington Monument in the background.

Yelp
Every time I come to Washington DC, I make a point of visiting the Lincoln Memorial. Dedicated to the president who saved the Union, and freed 4 million of enslaved people. Besides the prominent statue of the 16th president seated, walls are decorated with words from the famous Gettysburg address. The Lincoln Memorial was also used at various times for civil rights gatherings including the location of famous " I have a dream" speech.

Yelp
We woke up early on Christmas Day to see the Lincoln Memorial. We just moved to the DC area and thought it would be the perfect day to go, since most places were closed. It was still semi dark with little light. No traffic. Free Parking. Parking was easy and a small walk away. Very few people around the grounds. The maintenance of the area was very satisfactory. Pleasant walk to the Lincoln Memorial despite all the construction. We were relieved that we could still go and view the Lincoln Memorial. The views of the national monuments are breathtaking and peaceful. I could have spent a longer time enjoying the views from the Lincoln Memorial.

Yelp
We were on vacation and decided to come here. There's street parking. There's a lot of walking so make sure you have walking shoes. This is completely free do it doesn't get better then that. The pictures come out amazing. There is a ramp for wheel chairs on the side. The statue is way better in person the pictures don't do it justice. If you're in DC this is a must stop.

Yelp
E Pluribus Unum. The Lincoln Memorial stands as a beacon of liberty and symbolizes strength through unity. (In fact, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have A Dream Speech" here!) At the heart of the Greek temple sits an imposing sculpture of Abraham Lincoln. His stoic gaze overlooks a gleaming reflecting pool. Inscriptions of his Gettysburg Address and Second Inaugural Address adorn the surrounding walls. The temple's marble and stone composition provides a cool, shady area for contemplation and reverence. For a more peaceful experience, I highly recommend visiting in the late evening when there are little to no crowds. The Lincoln Memorial looks even more spectacular by the glow it radiates at night. Note: Restrooms and a gift store are available at ground level to the side of the temple.

Eliza G.

Yelp
The Lincoln Memorial is a tribute to Abraham Lincoln. It's located towards the western end of the National Mall in Washington DC. The larger-than-life statue of Lincoln is placed right in the middle of the monument and symbolizes great historical significance. Behind the statue (above Lincoln) are written words: "In this temple as in the heart of the people for whom he saved the union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever." This statement is there to honor Abraham Lincoln's greatly appreciated work as a president. The site appeals to multiple audiences which includes History enthusiasts, students, tourists, and anyone seeking to reflect on the themes of equality, democracy, and preservance. The Lincoln Memorial is made out of marble, with the building featuring 36 Doric columns that represent the states of the Union during Lincoln's presidency. Inside, there is a statue of Lincoln with the statement as listed earlier. Surrounding Lincoln are his speeches. The mission of the monument is to honor Abraham Lincoln and the significant work that he did during his presidency. It definitely succeeds in what it's trying to convey with its larger-than-life statue of Lincoln to the architecture which also symbolizes other aspects of his time as a president. The tour is enjoyable; it is free. It's a bit of a walk, but it's worth it!! There are available guided tours and nearby visitor centers that provide additional context. There was only one bummer: I've gone to the monument twice now, and there was construction on the site both times, so I was not able to see the true beauty of the site. I would have loved to see everything the way it was meant to be, all its symbolism, without the construction equipment blocking my view. This is also why I gave it a 4-star review rather than a 5-star.

Yelp
Awesome experience especially on a gorgeous day with friends. Only thing- to the kid i saw humping his mom, get a grip! Wtf
google avatar

Yelp
This is a beautiful Memorial. It can be busy. I recommend early morning. Anytime works to visit, but the morning gives you a bit more peace. Sitting on the steps looking at the reflecting pool with the Washington monument in the background is stunning. My daughter was surprised how big Lincoln is.
google avatar

Nick P.

Yelp
Update: they do have some construction going on but still open to the public. There is a ramp if you have a wheelchair or stroller. Be sure to check out the right and left side of the Lincoln statue. You'll find wording on the walls.
google avatar

Ericka R.

Yelp
What an amazing sight to see. It's a must see if you're in Washington DC area. I visited on a Friday afternoon and there always a small crowd. There was construction on the site which sucked for pictures but it was ok. Best part was that the entrance was free. The monument and Lincoln memorial were just breathtaking. I truly enjoyed it.
google avatar

Brady R.

Yelp
Not much to say: great memorial, usually very crowded and busy, but lovely architecture and stone work. Live the views of the reflection pond as well.
google avatar

Emilce R.

Yelp
This is a must see. I'm so glad it's free of charge. If you plan to go with 1 hour it's more than enough time. I enjoyed having an icecream under the trees after I was done exploring. I was taken back by the sheer size of both the Washington monument and Abraham Lincoln. This is a must see for anyone in the area at least once in your life.
google avatar

Eric D.

Yelp
This is an amazing monument to an amazing leader and it never fails to awe me and inspire in it's presence. The monument is beautiful and simple the craftmanship of the statue and the entire facade as well. A great deal of history happened here and it's incredible to experience it time after time. It is heavily under construction at the moment as they look to upgrade the visitor center, ADA access and restore the marble steps and decorations. It's still an amazing piece of history and a must visit attraction.
google avatar

Kiah R.

Yelp
I never realized how giant this memorial was until visiting it. It is HUGE there are steps to get there and people eat on the steps and take in the beautiful view. You can get nice and close to Lincoln. To get here you WILL have to do some walking so put on your walking shoes but it is worth it.
google avatar

Alyssa A.

Yelp
A must stop on anyone's D.C. trip. You see this Memorial in textbooks and in movies, but it's so much more magnificent and impactful to see it in person. Part of the National Mall, easy to include in your itinerary and an easy walk from the Washington Memorial. We came here at night, and while I don't have the daytime comparison, seeing it at night was incredible with the way the lights shined on the monument. Standing at the top of the stairs at the monument and looking out across the reflecting pool and toward the Washington Memorial is both beautiful and peaceful. An important stop and easy to incorporate on your trip to the National Mall.
google avatar

Hayley F.

Yelp
Lincoln Memorial is easily accessible via car or an easy breezy walk through the park. A part of the Lincoln Memorial is currently undergoing construction but the majestic view of the statue is still impressive. Construction will be completed in 2026, and there will be more interesting exhibits added to the Lincoln Memorial. There is so much to learn from the current Memorial already, and I can't wait for the new construction to be done.
google avatar

Christy M.

Yelp
While there is currently construction going on around the memorial (Lincoln museum is coming in 2026!) it still holds all the majesty it ever did. I am semi obsessed with Abraham Lincoln, and have read more biographies on him than I can count. So when I was in the DC area, I had to come pay my respects. It was a busy evening with a lot of school groups and tourists, I was very disappointed that they were not honoring the signs asking for respect and quiet. It was quite loud in there and people were trying to clap and be loud so they could hear the echo. But it still didn't take away from the beautiful quotes on the wall and the statue of our greatest president. It is a hike to get up to the top, so give yourself time if you have mobility issues, but there is a ramp available if you don't want to take the steep stairs
google avatar

Scott F.

Yelp
They were doing renovations but you can still walk the 58 steps to see the iconic statue. It's busy during the day but there were less people at night. I think I liked the night time view as there were lights surrounding it. Also not too far from here you can visit the Korean War Veterans Memorial.
google avatar

Spencer L.

Yelp
This monument is so iconic and amazing to visit! Unfortunately, there was construction going on around it in preparation for their new museum that is being put in. But still, this is an absolute must see if you in DC. It is easy to get to inside the national mall, you can park or get a ride and be dropped off right next to it. Unfortunately, the Metro is not right by, so you may need to look at a bus line or uber.

Yelp
Tony and I were in Washington DC to celebrate his 61st birthday. He said he that he was unable to go on his 6th grade patrol trip, and he always wanted to see the monuments. We walked over 12 miles this Saturday, so he could see the memorials and we still didn't see them all. We walked down the Mall Greenway from the capital to the Lincoln Memorial, now that's a haul !!! They were refurbishing a lot of the monuments and buildings but they were still beautiful and free to enjoy. All of the public areas were full of tourist and foreign languages being spoken at every turn. I found it exciting, adventurous and even exhilarating!! NOT my Tony, he found it overwhelming, crowded and made him very frustrated. It is so strange how two people experiencing the same day, can be so different in views! Lol! He never wants to go back, and yet I can't wait. The entire day overwhelmed him. But, he did admit the Lincoln Memorial was beautiful just too crowded!! I told him maybe we could try at night, he just stared at me
google avatar

Jada J.

Yelp
They are doing some construction out here. Probably not the best time to come and take professional pictures but you can still catch nice views and get up close to Lincoln.
google avatar

Eva G.

Yelp
Climbed the steps up to see this beautiful sight. A must for those visiting DC. Took the time to read everything and just appreciate. Right before I walked backed down, I took a moment as the views were just breathtaking.
google avatar

Sara M.

Yelp
What can be said about one of the most recognized landmarks in DC or really anywhere in this county!? It was very impressive to see him up close and personal. The steps up took a minute but if you're able to - it's so worth it! I believe there is also an elevator but I'm not sure how that works. We got the chance to see him during the day and at night. Impressive sight both times but there is something about a nighttime visit, when the world is quiet and resting that made it a little more special.
google avatar

Darlene B.

Yelp
This wasn't our first time coming this was our second time both times we came at night. We will go in the day if we choose to come again. We had to play with the portrait setting to retrieve a good photo this is free to the public you just walk on in. The large statue was really breathtaking on both visits. However; it was nothing like the first time. We had outfits and was more shocked. Now we like Lincoln is our homie lol

Nadiia R.

Yelp
Visiting the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., was a deeply moving experience. Standing before the towering statue of Abraham Lincoln, I felt a profound connection to American history. The inscriptions of the Gettysburg Address and Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address on the walls added to the solemn atmosphere, prompting reflection on the nation's past. The memorial's grandeur, combined with its serene location overlooking the Reflecting Pool, makes it a must-visit landmark that offers both inspiration and a tangible link to the country's heritage.
google avatar

Shaw K.

Yelp
I visited here while on a summer trip a while back. Though it was quite humid and the walk to the memorial had me very damp, I must say it was completely worth it. The memorial is massive and it was truly impressive to see such an iconic statue with my own eyes. The view from the top of the steps is incredible and the only thing that would have made it better was if the sun was out. This place has something that almost anyone can appreciate. I feel lucky to have gotten this experience.
google avatar

Ginette P.

Yelp
This has to be one of the most recognize memorials in the area. This memorial is impressive & pays homage to one of the few presidents that actually made a difference in history specially during a time where life was so unfair. The Architecture is very impressive & the words behind are inspiring. Seems like it is currently going through some renovations as of August 2023 partial area by the stairs was closed off. This one of the few that I can say is definitely worth the visit.
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
The Lincoln Memorial has always been my favorite memorial in D.C. and it's likely because Lincoln is one of my favorite presidents. It's a stunning tribute to him and it's a very thought-provoking place to be, even when it's absolutely crowded. The architecture of the building itself is gorgeous and that is only enhanced by the statue of Lincoln himself. My favorite way of seeing this is it lit up at night and the memory of that is one that I will keep with me forever. It's a beautiful memorial and one you should make sure to see once in your life.
google avatar

Kierstin R.

Yelp
So cool! If you want to see something really neat and you enjoy historical things, then I would definitely recommend checking out the monument mall in D.C. Also, it's free to walk around and take pictures of the monuments!
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
So amazing. Definitely worth the walk. It's under renovation with an expansion slated for 2026. After viewing this, it's a short walk to view the White House.
google avatar

Talya S.

Yelp
We had a great time going to see the Lincoln Memorial this week. It definitely gets pretty crowded, but is a great place to visit. With great views of the reflective pool.
google avatar

Jesy T.

Yelp
Everytime I'm in Washington DC I love to make the trek out to the Lincoln memorial! The view of the memorial itself is astonishing and the view from the top step towards the courtyard is also one of my favorites! This past Easter weekend the weather was perfect and made the walk all worth while. Definitely a must if you're in the area!
google avatar

Emily D.

Yelp
Such wonderful views, best in the NCR! 100 percent free to go in and see Lincoln. Great place to start your DC tour. Well worth the trip no matter how much time you have in DC. Tip: if you are using Uber be specific in your pick up location it is pretty busy down there.
google avatar

Matt R.

Yelp
This is one of the most iconic spots in DC and well worth a visit. We went at night and was extremely busy still. Tons of people making it a bit hard to navigate, but still so worth the trip. We made our visit short because it was so crowded. At the top of the steps, inside where Lincoln is, is a little tiny bookstore which sells some souvenirs. It is the size of a closet with books and other items. I had visited this memorial about 20 years ago, and the bookstore/gift shop it is exactly as I remember it, unchanged. Amazing vantage/viewpoint as you can see down the mall from the steps. We went on a moonlit night and it was just a spectacular and beautiful view. The bathrooms were closed/unavailable the day we visited. Taxi stand just off to the side of the memorial (if you're facing the Washington monument, they are to the left) making it convenient to catch an Uber or taxi afterward.
google avatar

Courtney W.

Yelp
They are currently doing construction on the memorials, but you can still get to them. It was incredible to see this for the first time.
google avatar

Doug D.

Yelp
Fantastic and accessible. Large and awe inspiring. People from many countries and all walks of life there. Beautiful location and view of the Washington Monument.
