Lindores Abbey Distillery - Gastro Obscura

"For centuries, Lindores Abbey stood in ruins without receiving much attention. For most of the 20th century, the farm was owned by Drew Mackenzie Smith. Mr. Smith remembers how one day, in 2001, an “shambolic chap in a linen suit” came and asked his father to look around the ruins of the Abbey. And then, in six months, a book arrived in the post: Scotland and Its Whiskies by Michael Jackson (not the Michael Jackson, but rather an acclaimed whisky writer). This book referred to Lindores Abbey as a pilgrimage for a whisky lover, as the earliest written account of Scotch whisky refers to Lindores Abbey. The reference comes from the Exchequer Roll and dates back to 1494. According to the document, a monk named John Cor was commissioned by King James IV to turn eigh bolls of malt into Aqua Vitae (Latin for Water of Life, or, in other words, a fancy term for a strong alcoholic beverage or medieval Scotch whiskey). And it can only be assumed that Aqua Vitae had been produced on-site much earlier. The reference in the book gave the long-needed impetus to take advantage of the site’s history and produce whiskey once again. Five centuries after the original mention, the distillery opened its doors. The current distillery’s image is largely based on its historical roots. For example, to maintain the aura of the monastery, the barrels are manufactured from the oaks growing near an old monastery in the small village of Thiron-Gardais, some 80 kilometers south of Paris. Visitors are invited to take a tour of the distillery and see for themselves how the past merges with the present. The guides will tell you about the history of the place, show state-of-the-art equipment used for whisky production, and allow you to indulge in some tastings of Lindores Abbey whiskey and its Aqua Vitae (the owners now use this term for alcohol that has not yet matured to be technically called whisky). However, the main emphasis is still on the quality of whiskey, as the owners are really careful not to turn this place into a “Whiskey Disneyland”. Lindores Abbey itself has seen many significant historical personalities and events. Founded in 1191, the wealthy abbey not only accommodated such monarchs as David II, Edward I of England, and Robert the Bruce but also Scotland’s greatest national hero, William Wallace. Know Before You Go Lindores Abbey Distillery is located within a few hundred meters from the town of Newburgh, a 20-minute drive from Perth, a 1-hour drive from Edinburgh, and a little over an hour's drive from Glasgow. The distillery is open to visitors seven days a week from April to October and from Wednesday to Sunday from November to March, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Distillery Tours are available at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. To book a tour or tasting experience, visit the website. Standard tours cost £15 for adults and £5 for children." - tamuleviciusmantas

No whisky pilgrimage should be considered complete without a visit to Lindores Abbey, earliest confirmed site of whisky distillation in Scotland. The owners could have taken the easy way, leaned into only the tourism part of it, bottling other people's spirit and selling it under the Lindores Abbey brand. Instead, they've managed to combine a beautiful nod to the past with an excellent start to their own whisky journey. Although all the Lindores whiskies are quite young, they are already impressive. Absolutely worth a visit, both for the history and the whisky. Really looking forward to seeing what these guys do in the future.

This is a lovely new distillery built on the site of the abbey. Its full of history and they have tried to include as much history within the building giving it lots of character. Its a small distillery thats new to distilling whisky which was brought on by the history of the abbey which when in the past was home to monks who brewed their own alcohol (aqua vite) water of life. Its one of the only distillery's that is dog friendly, so even your pooch can go round the distillery with you. Whilst there , look out for the abbey's famous duo, their beautiful cats. They offer a lovely meat and cheese platter for 2 whilst you sample a wee dram/cocktail after the tour, or even if you just want to visit the abbey located across the road.(Pre order this please) The distillery has a wide variety of gifts/whisky to purchace (something for everyone) and the staff are happy to answer any questions you may have. This is definitely a place to visit whether a whisky lover or just a tourist as there is plenty of history around the grounds and surrounding area. 👍👍👍👍👍

An Unforgettable Experience at Lindores Abbey Distillery – Spanish Tour with Lorena We had the absolute pleasure of taking the Spanish tour at Lindores Abbey Distillery, led by the incredible Lorena — a talented whisky blender whose passion truly shines through in every word she speaks. From start to finish, the experience was nothing short of outstanding. Lorena captivated us with her enthusiasm and deep knowledge, making the entire tour easy to follow and incredibly engaging. She explained every detail in such a clear and accessible way, ensuring that everyone felt included and understood. She was always attentive, asking if we had any questions and making sure nothing was left unexplained. One of the highlights was the whisky tasting session, where Lorena guided us through the art of tasting different whiskies. Her insights added so much depth to the experience and really helped us appreciate the craft behind every drop. The professionalism and warmth of the entire team were exceptional. A special mention goes to how wonderfully welcomed our dog Lily was — not just by the staff, but also by Lorena herself. It truly made us feel at home. Lorena’s passion for her job is contagious. It’s clear she loves what she does, and that love is reflected in the quality of the tour. She made the whole experience so comfortable, friendly, and memorable. I would 100% recommend visiting Lindores Abbey Distillery, especially if you have the chance to join a tour with Lorena. Whether you’re a whisky expert or just curious, you’ll walk away inspired and impressed. A truly unforgettable visit!

We had a very good stay here. Although we didn't find our favorite whiskey of the trip, we still felt very welcome. We had a great tour and a super informative tasting. It is a pretty new distillery but I am sure that there will be some very good whiskies coming from there in the future.

Wonderful peaceful place. Took a group of folks here in May 2025 and the staff team could not have been more accommodating or friendly. Would highly recommend this as a dementia friendly place. Lift access to the first floor and accessible toilet were all good. Helen our tour guide did an amazing job with our group. Thank you 🙏

We so enjoyed our recent visit! Thank you Linda (lynne?) for a FAB tour. The perfect amount of information about the history of the building and distillery and whiskey process without being too overwhelming. It was a cold winter day and will return next time in the summer to take advantage of the outside space and explore the abbey ruins! Try the Acqua Vita for a taste of something unique and different!

Yelp
Linda gave a highly educational tour on the history of the abbey and the distillery as well as their distillation process. So much fun. And of course the tasting afterward. Even more fun. Then I spent a bunch of money in the "gift"shop
