20 Beautiful Castles in Ireland to Inspire Your Next Trip

"First constructed in 1185 and rebuilt in the Gothic style in the mid-19th century, this ancestral home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire sits on the banks of the Blackwater River in the town of Lismore, County Waterford. Its elaborate gardens and a contemporary art gallery are open to the public during the day, while the castle itself is sometimes available to rent in its entirety — the property has 15 bedrooms and can accommodate up to 27 guests." - Patricia Doherty Patricia Doherty Patricia Doherty is a writer who specializes in covering destinations, resorts, and cruises for Travel + Leisure and other publications. I've been meaning to stop off here for years and finally did. The gardens are beautiful and very well maintained. I found the small art gallery interesting, and there was a girl there on hand to explain anything I wanted to know about all the pieces. There was also a small craft fair there on the grounds the day I visited and couldn't resist some homemade jam.

Wonderful place, I fell in love with the garden. My son is only 4y old and he was running around, discovering ever more beautiful places, plants and flowers. A true gem. Lovely coffee and cakes too!

We were very disappointed to learn that the castle is private! They tell you that after you pay! The cafe was also very expensive! €7.50 for a piece of cake and €3.50 for a small cup of coffee!! I'd like to known more beforehand!! The money you pay going in is for the garden only.

Don't follow the sign and drive hundred miles, it's private castle and you cannot visit in. They have to write on all sign on the road "private castle". I'm sure noone would like to drive for a garden. I see people's shared pictures, there are a lot of more beautiful gardens in Ireland. When we arrived two very rude old women were at the entrance for sale the ticket for garden not the castle. We learnt that the castle is private from those women at the entrance. I said as statement that; "To hear that here, disappointed for tourists after drove a lot". one of them told rudely " it's disappointed for you not for the owner". I shocked. And she stands up from her chair and turned her back while saying "I think this coversation will continuing all day I cannot do it." I had second shock. I didn't say anything. while the other woman sitting the chair said to her colleague; " no worries I will take it". I said I think both of you didn't understand me, it was a statement I shared with you, I was not arguing with you". There was no apologies. We were 6 people shocked and we turned back with no other words because I didn't want to ruined our holiday with two aggressive, rude women.

We only visited the gardens this time. We went there on June, 2nd and the selection of flowers and plants in blossom was just awesome. Really nice place to visit on a lazy day...

Lismore Castle is a privately owned castle that is not open to the pubic. However, the gardens are open to the pubic for a fee. There are the original gardens and the 19th century gardens. Both are worth seeing. Near the original gardens is a tea room and art gallery. Park outside the 17th century gatehouse and go pay the fee inside the gatehouse.
