39 New Places in the Second-Edition Atlas Obscura Book

"The Irish Sky Garden’s name describes what to expect fairly well, but seeing this patch of nature suspended in the air, juxtaposed against the clear blue sky, is far more whimsical and mesmerizing than visitors expect. Designed by American James Turrell, this magical knoll is the perfect symbol for the Emerald Isle, and it’s an unparalleled piece of public art. Turrell is famed for his large-scale experimentations with light and space, challenging the viewer to engage with the boundaries and wonder of human perception. The Sky Garden is set against the natural landscape of the Celtic Liss Ard, or “High Fort,” an ancient structure half reclaimed by nature which lends its own fairytale whimsy to the location. So even though the sky garden is a contemporary piece of art with a strikingly postmodern shape and aesthetic, it is the perfect complement to a place that is already a bridge between two worlds.  Shaped like a bowl, the structure features a central stone plinth reminiscent of ancient Celtic and Egyptian altars. The altar rises up at an angle, and features two stone footrests on each end to allow the viewer to lie down facing up and out toward the edge of the crater above. All that is visible from this vantage point is the green grass and sky, creating a uniquely serene experience that invokes past rituals and ancient rites. According to Turrell, “the most important thing is that inside turns into outside and the other way around, in the sense that relationships between the Irish landscape and sky changes.” If you have ever struggled to empty your mind during meditation, a moment alone in the Sky Garden may be the closest you’ll come to achieving optical and aural harmony." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

We had a glorious stay at this beautiful estate. From the warm welcome to the lovely breakfasts, spa treatments, paddling on the lake, walking the gardens… it is an experience you will not soon forget. The staff is welcoming and friendly, the rooms comfortable and tasteful, the food delicious.

Highly recommended. The service was excellent and attentive. The food delicious and the cocktails were had out of this world!|The Mews room was well appointed but sadly a little small for us with our dog.|We regretted not staying longer!

I had an absolutely delightful long weekend stay here in late March. The estate is charming with beautiful grounds and gardens (even if a bit soggy this time of year). I deliberated over my room choice and was SO happy I chose a Lake House Suite. It has an incredible view out over the lake and is very peaceful with lots of comfortable and clean furnishings. It does require some stairs and a 8-10 min uphill walk to the manor (if you don’t have a car to drive), so it might not be the best choice for those with limited mobility. But for me it was perfect and peaceful. Being a vegan/vegetarian, I especially appreciated their inclusive menu that was quite delicious. I also had one for the best massages of my life. Staff were all wonderfully attentive and helpful. I would highly, highly recommend and hope to return again someday!

Everything about this property is amazing and it exceeds expectations at every turn. I suggest you stay for at least a few nights to take advantage of the size and variety of activities at the property. I would just say don’t eat at the restaurant as it is poor quality food that is at a very high price point. You are much better off going to town or into Baltimore for food.

Totally perfect stay for my Fiancé and I (and our Cavapoo). From start to finish, the staff took care of every possible need and were incredibly attentive. The location and estate are also stunning which helps! Will definitely be back. ||

This estate is just lovely although the rooms could use some attention. |Staff were lovely and the check in experience was very nice. The common areas in the main house were just lovely, and we enjoyed a drink on a big sofa in front of the fire overlooking the estate. In terms of accommodation, we were in one of the "lake house" rooms, but please note the lake is nearby but not within sight and these rooms are a long way from the main house. Our room was upstairs without a view, and quite cold (just oil heaters that did not seem to be working very well). Bed was very comfortable. Walk to main house and breakfast was lovely but we were fortunate the weather was favourable. I would stay again, but would book a room in the main building.

We stayed two nights and would recommend it for genuine good service. The many walks including the Sky sculpture, a swim in the lake after a sauna and scenery of the area. Food was fairly good in general but not for vegan or vegetarian guests.

Loved the experience, stayed in lake house with our 2 year old. Great for people who love nature and to disconnect. Really warm and genuine staff, food was inventive and a real step above standard hotel options, also catered standard dishes for our 2 year old with zero fuss. Only word of advice for people in lake house, shortest walking route to main hotel is not suitable for buggy, lots of steps and its mostly trail path. The main road is a long and fairly steep climb. Managed fine with a walking 2 year old and enjoyed the stroll. Would happily stay again and reccommend.
