There was a bar in Queentown, New Zealand which was hilariously and unashamedly hipster. It was called "Little Blackwood". It was decorated to look like a log cabin. There were deer antlers mounted on the walls and a Christmas tree next to a fireplace. Beer was served in jars with handles. The predominantly male bar staff all had big beards with slicked back combed hair, and the uniform everyone wore was a tight black and white striped shirt, like a street mime would wear.
At one point, an R&B song started playing on the stereo, and they all started cringing and groaning. Quickly, someone rushed to the stereo and started playing, "I Will Wait" by Mumford & Sons - the ultimate hipster anthem of this generation. Then they all started nodding and smiling at each other in relief that the music crisis had been averted.
I don't mind visiting bars like this because, while they seem pretentious, they're also quite welcoming. Unlike the elitist nightclubs of the late 90s and early 2000s, hipster bars of today actually let me in, no matter how I look or what I'm wearing. And they're always happy to pour me a free sample of the various craft beers and ciders they have on tap. So I'm not actually against this current trend, where 20 year old uni student bar staff look like 48 year old lumberjacks. I just think it's funny and old fashioned. And I like being allowed in.
