18 Places to Savor Indigenous Cuisine in North America

"Canadian-born Bill Alexander started cooking professionally at the age of 15, going on to earn a culinary degree and honing his skills in apprenticeships from Italy to Australia to Japan. After returning to Calgary, in Alberta, he assumed the executive chef role at the Grey Eagle Resort, an expansive hotel on Tsuut’ina Nation land. The masterful gourmand—himself part Mohawk and Iroquois—took somewhat of a red pen to the hotel restaurant’s run-of-the-mill menu. Today, Little Chief is an upscale restaurant at the intersection of time-honored classics and First Nations’ cuisine.  From top to bottom, the menu is stamped with indigenous influence. Wines from Indigenous World Winery and Osoyoos—both Native-owned—neighbor with saskatoon berry–laced cocktails across the drinks menu. The restaurant’s “Heritage Bread Board” sports an array of fry bread and bannock with spreads of Tsuut’ina honey and smoked pemmican butter, while a smoked bison poutine offers a twist on the Canadian late-night favorite. A “Smoke-signal Flatbread” features a stack of smoked and cured bison pastrami, wild boar, and confit chicken. Even on the “Hotel Classic Menu,” Little Chief’s service to their less-adventurous clientele, wild boar gets candied for a chicken-and-brie sandwich and apricot-glazed for a salad. Don’t let the bright, cosmopolitan interior fool you. Little Chief is a taste of Calgary before the pomp." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

We recently had the pleasure of dining at Little Chief Restaurant for lunch, and it was an experience to remember! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality. Our server, Anna, was an absolute delight—sweet, friendly, and genuinely interested in making our visit enjoyable. Her honest recommendations helped us navigate the menu, and she took the time to get to know us, which added a personal touch to our meal. Now, let’s talk about the food! Each dish we ordered was simply divine and incredibly well-priced. My son opted for the elk meatball pizza, which was bursting with flavor. I had the grilled chicken sandwich, perfectly cooked and incredibly satisfying. My husband chose the bison steak, and it was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful. We decided to share our meals, and I must say, each dish was more delicious than the last! To top off our wonderful dining experience, Anna surprised us by bringing out a piece of cake with a candle for my husband. It was such a thoughtful gesture that made our visit even more special. Overall, Little Chief is truly a hidden gem! The combination of exceptional service and fantastic food makes it a must-visit. We left feeling full and happy, and we can’t wait to return. Highly recommend!

Ordered their Salmon Bisque which was excellent. Lots of salmon chunks, well seasoned , large portions and filling. We ordered their Cobb salad and had it packed up for home. The soup had been enough. Tasty , well presented . We also ordered their roasted bone marrow with bannock. Very rich . May not appeal to everyone- again a large portion. The staff were accommodating but It got quite noisy when it was full

We had a spectacular dinner here. Let's start with the complaints: it's a bit loud and the table we had was on the main aisle and near the bar... which added to the noise.. and traffic. Another complaint was that the fry bread is not like you might expect (at least coming from the Southwest, US) that's similar to fried dough or "elephant ears." So if thats what you're expecting for their fry bread, its not that. But it's still good! Otherwise, everything else was excellent. Biggest kudos to Salome, our server. She was absolutely amazing. Really appreciated her attentiveness and suggestions. She was lovely and made up for the noise and traffic. We had: + Breads & Spreads (breads were great, tart cherry butter divine. Cheese spread and honey delicious. Sweet potato hummus, just okay. + Pow Wow Poutine (Insanely large portion. Excellent blend of flavors. The smoked parmesan was such a great addition.) + Juniper braised Short Rib (generous portion of beef cooked perfectly and amazing juniper jus. Perfect selection of vegetables to accompany.. only complaint carrots and broccolini were slightly undercooked. They were going for al dente, which is lovely, but they were just a bit undercooked and too raw.) + Maple Pecan Tart (divine. Seriously. Little dollops of frozen mascarpone were a surprise and delightful.) I can't remember what our cocktails were specifically. But overall, I'd definitely go again.

Came here for our great grandmas 104th birthday and they made it such a lovely celebration. Everyone’s meal and drinks were amazing and they have such a unique menu with comfort food classics with a twist to simple food for less adventurous taste buds. I got the beef dip and the side Cesar salad was AMAZING!! Others at our table got the chicken sandwich and burgers, all were great.

Wow this restaurant has impressed me big time! I really love the indigenous fusion food and game meats, and the presentation is stunning considering it's not really a luxury dining place... the restaurant is located in the hotel and the service from start to finish was awesome. From the friendly doorman, the kind hostess, and the amazing waitress and busser, service was A+! I made reservations for a birthday dinner for 3 people and brought my own cake (3$ pp cutting fee) We had the charcuterie, hamburger soup, berry soup, gluten free elk pizza, short rib, and bison hamburger steak. The charcuterie was not really a lot for 2 people as there was only 3 pieces of each meat and cheese but the breads were extremely dense and filling, I would like to try the bread platter next time. All the food was EXCEPTIONAL! I am pretty picky about my dining and I researched restaurants in Calgary for HOURS before choosing this location. 1000% recommend to try especially if you like meat. The berry soup tasted very sweet and is more like a dessert- think berry pie or cobbler without the pastry... I took it to go because it was too sweet to have before dinner as an appetizer in my opinion. I am going to make it into a mini pie when I get back home ;-) The staff put the birthday candles on the cake and sang happy birthday to us and they were so lovely and kind, it was just overall a wonderful experience! The whole thing with tip cost 200$, and that was for 2 non alcoholic drinks and 1 beer plus the food. Definitely will go back!

The food was surprisingly delicious for a restaurant in the casino hotel. The grilled salmon was decently crispy and yummy. The smashed burger was fresh and juicy. The seasoned vegetable that came with the main was the highlight of the day. Very wholesome, lightly charred and delicious. We cleared the plate. The only minus is the extra crispy fish skin that came with the salmon was stale and chewey not crispy but the rest of the food was outstanding.

This restaurant is located just outside the main hotel lobby. The staff were very friendly and pleasant. The menu has a good variety of options. The food was excellent. Our group of 7 all had a great experience. I recommend making a reservation if you're attending an event at the casino.

What a wonderful experience and so happy we chose this restaurant, something different. The service was great, so kind and patient and explained the specialty drinks perfectly. I can’t say enough about the food, not only was it like a piece of art on your plate, the flavours and quality was fantastic. Highly recommend to anyone that is going this way or looking for just a great space to have dinner, relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Thank you Little Chief for the fantastic hospitality
