On the Grid : The Fish Shop

"What we have here is an upmarket fish & chips shop drawing inspiration from the white-washed seaside towns of the American north-east coast. The atmosphere is buzzing at the frount, but more intimate at the back. The fish is fresh, locally caught and well prepared. There’s also a good choice of Australian wines from organic to natural and bio-dynamic - the house rosé is a must! Photography: Merivale." - Squad Ink

“One of the snacking spots I recommend if you’re near Town Hall is this hidden gem. As a seafood lover, I enjoy this place a lot. The prices are reasonable, and although the food can sometimes be a bit salty, it’s still tolerable, and I would recommend it.”

This EXCELLENT place is right next door to Maccas just near northern entry / exits of Town Hall Station. They provide ASTONISHINGLY YUMMY crumbed & fried fish cakes for $2 each! They do! In Sydney in 2025! No one else does & every day I get off the train & prepare to “get across Pyrmont bridge in all weather” I make certain I RAM 3 of their FANTASTIC fish cakes down my throat & into my body because for $6 (yep: only six bucks!) I KNOW I will be able to run around a pub working for 9 hours at the age of 52. The WONDERFUL people who run this place are “keeping this old man nutritioned & energised”. I adore them! So I’m publicly THANKING them 👍🏼👏🏼🙏✅😘😘😘🤩😇

A nice authentic fish shop located on the bottom level of the QVB building (Town Hall end). I've had individual meals and corporate catering from here quite a few times, and both options were really nice. The catering was a big hit in the office, and the menu is quite reasonably priced. TIP: I would recommend getting a few extra potato scollops with your meal. ENJOY!

The price makes absolutely no sense, waaaay too good, better than 90% of the overpriced fish & chips shops, for like 1/4 of the price. One of those hidden jewels of Sydney. Everything’s fresh and you literally see the seafood coming out of the fryer

I bought seafood and fish from this store, but unfortunately, when I got home and opened the container, I was hit with a strong rotten smell. The fish was in very bad condition and clearly not fresh. This suggests poor storage, lack of quality control, or selling non freshness food. I do not recommend buying from them if they cannot guarantee freshness.

This is a difficult review to score. The grilled octopus was easily four star but conversely, the Greek salad, was only ok and the serving rather measly. For me, a measly serving is almost automatically a two star rating. That said, the grilled octopus was worthy of at least four stars. I’ve given it a three star rating as a compromise. If the proprietor sees this, a word of advice - don’t be stingy on the cheapest part of the meal.

Was feeling peckish before work so opted to give this fish shop a try (only one closet to work in QVB/town hall). Was served promptly for peak hour. Bought 3 fish cocktails and 3 scallops for reasonable price. Noticed that the scallops were very oily and the fish was average :/

Yelp
Basically what others have said. Takeaway fish shop in the basement of the QVB hall. I got there at the end of the day for a late dinner, when they were clearly trying to sell out of food (so great last-minute deals). Ate in my nearby hotel and fish & chips were good, fresh, and well-prepared. I'd happily go back, though don't know it was so transcendent as to make it destination dining.

Yelp
Great fish & chips. Outside seating or takeaway. Reasonably priced and was very fresh and hot.

Yelp
A take away fish and chip station, in the heart of the city. Located right in the heavy foot traffic flow of the QVB underground passageway, near Town Hall station. The food here is always fresh and tasty and as a result, they're always busy. I've been coming here are a while when in the area and craving fish. The grilled fish with lemon is a great tasty and healthy lunch option, and I add salad, or chips too depending how hungry I am. Good moist grilled fish, with lots of flavour and really fresh. The chips are very more-ish too. The Greek salad is OK, but make sure you ask for olives, as they never seem to make it into my tub. Tasty snack options are also available: calamari, fish pieces, and my favourite the Potato Scallops are seriously good. Lots of outdoor seating available above ground, by Town Hall to have lunch and enjoy the fresh air.

Yelp
This place is the best. I've been coming here for almost a decade now and I almost always get the grilled fish with steamed vegetables and rice ($8.50). The food is delicious and fresh; the serving sizes are huge; and the prices are sensational. If you come here at about 6 pm they have all their food packed into boxes which they sell for $4 each. They used to sell them for $3 each and the guy with the glasses and ponytail used to yell, 'Showtime, showtime, one for $3, three for $10.' This made no mathematical sense to me, and one day I told him as much. The next day when I came back, the price had gone up to $4 per box. So you can blame me for that. The fishcakes at this place are fantastic - make sure you ask for a wedge of lemon to squeeze on them for maximum deliciousness. I think they sell them at two for $3 in the evenings.

Yelp
When you want a quick seafood fix in the heart of the city, then this is the place for a cheap cheerful fix of oil and comfort. They do all the fried good stuff quite well and it is pretty fresh which is due to the high turnover. The grilled fish is pretty good as the grill/bbq baby octopus. Simple hole in the wall that seems to have been in business forever along this strip leading towards the QVB from Town Hall station. The trick is to wait to you see fresh chips thrown into the window and then order, nothing like piping hot chips to go with your choice of seafood. Prices are surprisingly good for the location.

Yelp
Rush on past QVB gourmet Seafood counter - this shop does the most brilliant "on the go" seafood fried rice ($3), it's jammed pack with goodies. They are so considerate of peak hour that they have all their fish pre-packed in plastic containers and it is melt in your mouth sensational. Yes they've got all the deep fried fav's and although I always choose the low fat option (grilled) the deep fried stuff looks out of this world. You know how some people just have the knack of doing things right? QVB Gourmet sets the standard for a fish and chip eatery. They don't have any seats but that's what keeps the price down. Everything is really good value, next time you're out and about and need a snack around Townhall station Galleries entrance just follow your nose.
