Frances Mayes on the Joy of Italian Cucina Povera - AFAR

"An urban, hyped dining spot whose dinners the author experienced but ultimately found less worthy of reverence than the spontaneity and genuineness of Italian home cooking; the meals left the author unable to 'worship' at these polished urban temples in the way one might at true cucina povera." - Frances Mayes

This Italian restaurant leaves a mixed impression. The interior is quite outdated and could definitely use some renovation. Cleanliness is also not at the level one would hope for. The staff seems rather confused and service is slow, which affects the overall dining experience. That said, the food is genuinely delicious – full of flavor and clearly made with care. It’s clear that the owner aimed to create an authentic Italian atmosphere, but unfortunately, the execution misses the mark. If you can overlook the setting and service, the food itself is well worth trying.

I had bee here several times over the past few years. The food is always really good. The service is good too. They did seem to raise pricing significantly since the last time I visited, but that seems to be current situation everywhere. I had the house special pasta that night and it was really good. My coworker had the lam chops that were excellent. The garlic bread was $12 for a quarter of a baguette which seemed over priced to us even with price increases, but still tasted good. Overall, it is a nice place to have a real Italian meal in Waikīkī.

Google
Pretty bad. Don’t waste time or money. Once sat and ordered food, never was checked on. Calamari seemed like frozen calamari deep fried, seafood pasta has 2 of each seafood option. If I could give negative stars I would.

Imari P.

Google
Bruschetta soaked completely through the baguette and had a fermented effect (seemed carbonated). Lasagna was edible and came out hot. The pizza truly tasted like Chef Boyardee made it, very nostalgic for sure.

Google
Check out the specials on your way in so you don’t miss something else great. The pasta was hearty, the salad felt light and healthy, and the tiramisu was a nice way to end the meal. Sitting outside with the light breeze and reading a book while eating was perfect.

Google
Cozy italian eatery on Kuhio Ave. in the middle of Waikiki. It is easy to miss until you see inside where there's an older model of a Ferrari speedster smack in the middle of the restaurant. We were a party of five there for a birthday dinner. The waiter served us immediately and was quite attentive. We had a variety of pasta dishes that were decent. It's not a scratch kitchen and pasta could be a lot more fresh but it was okay enough for us to finish our plates and order dessert. If you're super hungry and stuck in Waikiki, sure. I don't know that I would come here again, especially since the tiramisu is not homemade. :/

Google
Food is absolutely scrumptious. We went twice in a week when we came for holiday. Vegetarian options are absolutely splendid. We didn’t try non-veg options since we don’t eat but we can guarantee it’ll be good.

Google
This place was great. We've had carbonara in Italy, and this restaurant gave us a very authentic version of it. It was delightful, flavorful, and made the traditional Italian way. We were impressed. I will say, our experience really began with the hostess, who was so warm, kind, and down to earth. She maintained a great conversation, was able to make menu recommendations and came back to check on us multiple times. It was a very pleasant experience.

Yelp
I truly do not understand this restaurants lower rating. We had a pizza and a salad and it was truly amazing. The salad was so very fresh and delicious. The pizza was high quality ingredients and cooked to perfection. I am so glad we walked into this place on a whim. The service was great. The restaurant was clean and eclectic. Please do yourself a favor and give this place a chance.

Yelp
Love this Italian place! The food is Authentic , big portions and great price ! The best part is great convenient location ,next to our hotel in the middle of city center, the owner and staff are so friendly, great service we definitely want to go back ! Try their fried calamari and tiramisu so delicious!!

Yelp
Ordered lasagna they said took 30 minutes... turns out it took 30 minutes because they had to put the Stouffers frozen lasagna in the oven! I made one last week and it tastes the same! Absolutely disappointed with the experience do not go here.

Yelp
We came here on a chill afternoon and sat outside, which honestly was the vibe. The space itself? Super nice--breezy, relaxed, the kind of spot where you think the food is about to blow your mind. The staff was on point--attentive without hovering, like they actually see you and not just your table number. Big respect for that. Now the food... listen. It was fine. Not bad, not amazing--just kind of coasting. The fries? Low-key the best thing we ordered. Perfect crisp, good seasoning, the kind of fry that makes you nod once like, "Yeah. You get me." The pizza was okay--nothing to write home about, but we ate it. The kids were happy with the spaghetti, which honestly is half the battle when eating with kids in the first place, so points for that. Overall: good atmosphere, good service, food still finding its personality. I'd come back if I'm in the area and want something easy and not fussy. But would I daydream about it later? Eh, probably not.

Yelp
Stumbled upon here after work, and it did not disappoint! Located on Royal Hawaiian Avenue, the food at this location is just as good as the old Mediterraneo restaurant on King Street. We got the Mediterranea Salad which is nice and refreshing, though the seasoning was a little too salty for my liking. The lobster ravioli was divine. And you can't go wrong with their tiramisu. There were only 2 servers at the time we went, and they were hustling. The male is vivacious and very efficient with his food recommendations/service. The woman was a little more timid while moving through the dining room. It looks like the room is able to accommodate large parties (8-10pax), by combining 2-4 tops tables together. If you're lucky, chef comes out and chit chats with you. He's so passionate about his food. And don't forget to take a picture by the raging rocket red Ferrari while you're at it!

Yelp
Such a cute and authentic little Italian restaurant! A nice calm atmosphere with background music that allows actual conversation. The food is delicious. House made pasta and cannoli. The waiter is friendly and helpful. Definitely will return.

Yelp
No air conditioning, no refill for the soda, the pasta "swim" in oil, and the owner was really rude. Worst experience in Honolulu.
google avatar

Christian G.

Yelp
Food came out wrong, servers were constantly stressed when they brought the correct food it was slightly cold and quality wasn't there. Wouldn't go back. Tried it to carb load for Honolulu marathon but regretting that entirely

Yelp
Was very excited with food and atmosphere . Nice guys . Thanks . Very appreciated for service

Yelp
Not sure why this restaurant has a bad rating. Maybe too many Karens have trigger fingers.... If you're expecting a bougie vibe, then this ain't it. This is more of a cozy, no frills ambience, perfect for a break from the amazing seafood & Asian fare in the area. My partner and I had the Caesar salad, truffle pizza, and the pesto, and we cleared our plates. Would recommend!

Bob G.

Yelp
The food is always delicious. The owner is Italian, and this is "the real deal." Kyle waited on and took great care of us to ensure we had a great experience. Highly recommend.

Isaac C.

Yelp
Barley above average food for horrible service. Took them about 15 min for them to greet us and get us drinks. About 35 min wait for some pizza. The employees seemed disorganized and ran our food to another table. Only checked up on us once we finished our food and took forever to get the check. Waste of time

Yelp
My first experience so only can provide critique of one dish. I got their special sausage dish, Pappardelle Strangolapeti. Which is thick noodles, mushrooms, sausage pieces in a brown sauce. Bland to me. For the price, I was expecting a special tasting dish. Portion was good. No wine list. Offer of typical reds and whites house wines, a bit overpriced. The garlic bread (Ala cart) was crispy and good. Paper napkins for a $30 entree was underclass. There was no offer of cheese or other condiments. A nearby table was served a cheese shaker. Kinda cool Mediterranean setting with quiet instrumental music. Ferrari on display in the middle of tables. Outside was available but was busy with pedestrian traffic. I will visit again if only to taste their red sauce.

Rachel C.

Yelp
I had high hopes for this place. It's super cute and some reviews said the food was delicious. We were seated, given water and took our drink order quickly. It took about 20-30 minutes to get our drinks and only happened when we were obviously trying to get the attention of staff. At that point we were able to order our food. We got our two appetizers about 20 minutes apart. Once our second appetizer came, along with an entree salad, I asked for silverware. 10-20 minutes late a second entree came and I had to ask again for a set of silverware. It took a few more minutes but eventually it was brought to the table. We waited 25 minutes waiting for the last two entree. I went up to the counter to ask about them, even that half our party was already done with their food. A few minutes later a waiter came out and said they asked to have our order rushed which really just sounded located they forgot to put in the order or start cooking the entrees. About a hour and 30 minutes into our meal I got my first water refill. When the last two entrees came they were pretty disappointing. We were offered a free dessert to make up for our experience. Our whole meal lasted 2 hours and would have lasted longer if I hadn't gone to the counter multiple times to request service. I would not recommend visiting this restaurant.

Yelp
Awesome Italian cuisine and ambience! Fast service and any place with a Ferrari inside the restaurant has to be special. I had the Gorgonzola dish amazing. My third time here over time always excellent.

Yelp
Upon entering this eatery, I was excited. It's tastefully decorated and it appeared to be elegant and refined. Maybe it was because of the Ferrari on display on the dining room floor or the little touches that decorated the shelving. In any case, I was looking forward to our meal. The owner/manager took our order and it came out in a relatively timely manner. The first course was the calamari. When it was placed on the table, my stomach sank in despair. The calamari rings looked like overcooked onion rings lying on a wilted piece of greenery. It was served on a rectangular white plate with a side of ranch dressing, and the squid tasted no better than what you get at a sad county fair. Another notable item that made me shake my head in disappointment was the pappardelle strangolapreti--sausage and mushroom in a cream sauce. Upon first bite, I was pleased; however each bite I took afterwards revealed how overly salty the dish was. I attribute it to the large amount of sausage in the dish and any additional salt that was added to the dish. I left practically all the sausage on the plate and managed to eat the noodles. Half of the garlic bread we ordered was burnt on the bottom, and the raviolis, fettuccine, and margherita pizza were average. The most frustrating part of this experience was the service or lack thereof. It appeared they were short-staffed, so as we waited over twenty minutes for our tables to be bussed and to get the bill, I saw so many opportunities for the staff to be proactive rather than reactive. For example, it was clear that the food wasn't coming out fast enough, plates were being delivered to wrong tables, excuses that sounded like a child complaining were being given to customers about why the service was slow, and yelling was heard several times in the kitchen between management and who I assumed was the chef. To counter some of the aforementioned problems, when customers arrived and wanted to be seated, clear communication in an elegant and professional manner about their lack of staff and longer waiting times could have been expressed so the customers could decide if they even wanted to eat there. If they chose to stay, then they would expect things to be slower and would more likely have patience which could alleviate the "chicken with its head cut off" attitude that was emitting from the owner/manager. I don't know. I paid good money for a crappy experience and poor quality food. Yeah. I won't be back.

Yelp
The spaghetti bolognese was amazing. My husband ordered the spaghetti with meats but I'm by far was the best. Not a good wine of beer list. But oh well spaghetti for sure a must if you are craving some good pasta. Make sure to tell them al dente or they might he over the pasta

Yelp
really unclear how this place would stay open if it wasn't in such a touristy location. service terrible, food not much better. just a huge waste of time.

Yelp

Yelp
Visited for a birthday meal, easy reservations on open table. Aloha greetings at the door, had reserved outside table, yet they still gave use option of inside. Service was great, with timely check-ins. Food was fresh and specials looked great. BYOB gave us the opportunity to enjoy wine and corkage was not expensive. Dessert was so good we ordered a seconds. The feel of the restaurant was homie and family friendly. Definitely bringing visitors with children, when I can. Definitely going to return and make a regular visits.

Yelp
If you're looking for a relaxing, authentic Italian meal in Waikiki, this is not the place. Unfortunately, my recent experience at this restaurant was one of the worst I've had in the area, and that's saying something in a tourist-heavy neighborhood where standards should be higher. Let's start with the service: nonexistent, disorganized, and borderline rude. We waited nearly 20 minutes just to get water, and when we finally flagged someone down to order, the server acted like we were inconveniencing them. Basic questions about the menu were met with eye rolls and one-word answers. At one point, I genuinely wondered if we were on some kind of hidden camera prank show. When the food did arrive (an hour later, no exaggeration), it somehow managed to be both lukewarm and overpriced. The pasta tasted like it had been boiled in advance and left under a heat lamp. The "house marinara" was eerily close to something you'd find in a jar at a gas station convenience store. And the $30 plate of chicken parm? Let's just say I've had better versions in a mall food court. By the time the check came--after another prolonged game of "find the server" - we were too exhausted to complain. We just wanted to leave. Bottom line: Waikiki is filled with fantastic spots to eat, but this is not one of them. Poor service, forgettable food, and an atmosphere that feels more like a tourist trap than a dining experience. Do yourself a favor and pick literally anywhere else.

Yelp
Ok so we walked into this place and saw an experience we really wanted to like!We are on vacation mode and so happy to eat at any place by the time we sit down! I could not have been MORE disappointed in the food. BUT let's start with the service. The service was non existent and everyone was super abrupt and borderline rude. It's ok to have a limited wine and beer menu.. no problem... but I have a problem when the server barely acknowledges you when you inquire about what they do have. Ok but fine we placed our orders and were happily waiting.. nothing is gonna get us down on vacation mode... First the bruschetta... looked like it was topped with pico de gallo and tasted just ok when it came out. But we ate it. And we're still not deterred. Then .. Our dinner comes out... welp...Finally had to throw in the towel. The sauce tasted like it was straight out of a can. The gnocchi tasted like they had just been dethawed and forget the spaghetti and meatballs. The spaghetti was gummy and I'm pretty sure it had sat in a pot all day with the sauce. The meatballs tasted like they were out of the freezer section of the grocery store.. and actually I've made those before.. the grocery store version was better. If I could give this place zero stars I would. Super over priced trash Italian. Boo.

Yelp
I was doing research and found this place. We got there around 6:30-6:40p. The outside had a bunch of people but inside was pretty open. We went on a Wednesday so not really surprising. From the outside, it looks pretty small but inside is quite spacious. Even enough room for a car. They have outdoor seating, indoor seating and a bar. The decor is nice and feels on point. Wine bottle clichés, red and white table clothes, toppings for sale, the whole thing. It's a vibe. We ordered a pizza and tortellini. It was so good! Enough for 2 people. Pizza wasn't burnt, pasta wasn't hard, good stuff! The flavor was really popping. It was a really chill place. I feel like when it's busy, it's still a pretty chill spot. We sat for about 2 hours just talking. They refilled our water and left us alone. There was someone reading when we were there. So they'll let you hang out if they're not busy. The bill came a little while after we were done eating. They actually have an option to pay less if you have cash. It's a nice option...if you have cash lol. This place is tucked away. I'm sure they drum up enough business from passersby to stay afloat. I don't go to Waikiki often but I'd definitely come back for more.

Nicole T.

Yelp
not really what I would consider true Italian. No wine to buy by the bottle, it was a 1.5 litre, low end selection at best by the glass. Food was overpriced for lack of flavor and quality. The bruschetta appetizer was the only decent thing we had. No bread service. if you like Magnum PI there is a cool Ferrari inside. staff was nice enough too.
google avatar

Melody R.

Yelp
My husband has been wanting to try little Italy passing this place a cpl of different times. Love the inside decor and outside too. The music sounded like we were in Italy, itself so that was nice but I think husband would've like live music. Now, my husband went off menu and had a special request of what he wanted and they did a phenomenal job of accommodating him. All the food was really delicious and we can't wait to go back. Now they just didn't have a drink menu so you would just need to ask them what they have but everything was just great.

Joe M.

Yelp
There was a Ferrari in my pasta! The food is amazing, the chef came out and spoke Italian. The spicy oil is one of my favorite things I tried during my time here.
google avatar

Nic B.

Yelp
We tried to eat at Little Italy earlier today. Unfortunately, we waited over an hour for our food. Eventually, they told us the kitchen was backed up. However, tables that were only there for 15 mins received their dinner before us. We ultimately had to leave before being served. It's a shame because the ambiance looked perfect and the other plates looked delicious.
google avatar

Pepper B.

Yelp
Great casual Italian restaurant. It's quirky. There's a Ferrari parked in the middle. The food was really good. I had the gorgonzola gnocchi and pepperoni pizza and both were fantastic. Note that they do not serve alcohol, however, you are welcome to bring your own. The service was good too.
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
Great food. Made our dish custom. Excellent pasta with shrimp. Calamari as a starter was also excellent. The service was great. We ate outside in the atmosphere was just amazing. It was our first meal in Waikiki that blew us away.

Yelp
The pizza was so good! Such a cute place with unique decor. The staff was so welcoming and great. 10/10

Yelp
Good Italian food. Average service. Unique Hawaiian ambience sporting the original Magnum PI Ferrari 308. Definitely good value family dining.

Yelp
Found this gem and highly recommend. The employees are really nice and the food is delicious! We had meatballs, spinach ravioli, and margherita pizza and we recommend all 3!
google avatar

Lisa F.

Yelp
We started with appetizers of calamari and bruschetta, both a solid 10. Then shared a portion of lasagna and lobster ravioli. Another 10! It's a great change from all the bbq we had been eating. Highly recommend! Great service and very helpful.

Michelle P.

Yelp
Came to dinner with my family of 13. As soon as we sat the waitress was impatient After giving us five minutes she came back to table and was extremely rude. We asked for straws and she reached over and grabbed our trash rudely. we then had a another male server bring our food and started out very nice when he brought over the food we had fries with our order and asked for ketchup he brought it over and then I asked for salt and pepper and he stated i should have asked for everything all at once instead of asking when I needed it. I also ordered a steak and never got a steak knife to cut it The food was decent but the service was inexcusable.

Yelp
Little authentic Italian cuisine restaurant in the heart of Waikiki. Charming, delicious and refreshing if you're needing a break from all the seared ahi and poke Pacific Rim menus
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
On their website they say kid friendly...it is not! In fact they were very annoyed that we brought our toddler! They don't offer high chairs or kids menus...Their food is basic at best. Our waitress was very sweet, and was trying to be as accommodating but the hostess and other members of staff were very rude.
google avatar

Jesse M.

Yelp
Made reservations and were seated immediately. Excellent location on Royal Hawaiian avenue close to many hotels. Food is decent nothing special or bad. Service was good we had 2 waiters and didn't wait long for food or bill. Most memorable about this place is the red Ferrari that takes up half of the dining room.
google avatar

Christina T.

Yelp
I wish I could have left a 5 star review but the customer service at this place was absolutely terrible. Had to flag down the waiter several times. the pizza was good

Nila V.

Yelp
We had high hopes for this place, but unfortunately, our experience was frustrating from the start. It took 45 minutes just to get water, and in that time, we watched multiple tables who arrived after us be greeted, served, and even nearly finished their meals. We were a party of three Asian women, and while we can't say for sure why we were overlooked, the discrepancy in treatment was hard to ignore. The food itself was fine. Cute location.
google avatar

Roger J.

Yelp
Fantastic food and great service. A hidden gem. We make it a point to eat here every time we visit.
google avatar

Tiffany W.

Yelp
Craving Italian food in Hawaii seems odd but when one is Italian, the craving calls. We were thrilled to find a basic establishment with all the classics as opposed to something ultra fancy near the strip of restaurants. Very reasonably priced, we enjoyed the entire experience from sitting on the exterior patio, the imperfections of the front sign, excellent service, and easy going atmosphere. If you enjoy a cocktail, know that they only serve beer and wine. Inside, there is a large bar along with a hot red Ferrari that was part of the Magnum P.I films. Apparently the owner of Little Italy owns it - small world. Little Italy is casual yet intimate. Enjoy!!
google avatar

Ari M.

Yelp
amazing food. honestly a hidden gem. the service was good. the decor was so cute too. the place was amazing

Annelise P.

Yelp
The pasta was unbelievably good. I was on vacation from Seattle and miss my dinner the staff is so friendly too which was really nice

David S.

Yelp
Honestly the service hasn't been great when we've gone, but maybe we were just there on an off day or something. There's something about the lobster ravioli that was so delicious it left an impression on me. We'll be back.

Danielle K.

Yelp
Super cute little Authentic Italian restaurant. Outdoor and indoor seating. We had the homemade pasta INSANELY GOOD & a pizza! Pizza was perfectly cooked and so flavorful. Def worth a stop in!
google avatar

Amy G.

Yelp
Wow this place was really great. Felt like Rome sitting out at the pavement cafe. The pizza's are fantastic and the pasta dishes blew us away. We had a few like the spaghetti carbonara. Oh snap that was amazing. Fresh and get the Pinot Grigio. It's good on a very limited wine menu. Natalina is amazing. Super kind and fresh out of Scottsdale taking over Waikiki.
google avatar

Donna L.

Yelp
Excellent, wonderful, attentive service. Two staff members helping us were friendly and accommodating. Food portions are large and shareable. Our party of four ordered 4 pastas, 2 salads, and a dessert. We could've cut our bill in half by sharing 2 pastas, 1 salad, and 2 desserts (our dessert portion was smallish), for future reference. I tried the Caesar salad, Mediterranean salad, and fettuccini truffle pasta. The Caesar salad was good, I would order that again. The Mediterranean salad was disappointing as it was all romaine lettuce with sparse bland toppings and a bland dressing. The fettuccini truffle was excellent with perfect house made pasta and a delicious flavorful mushroom sauce. I would order it again, in fact, I would go back just for that dish. We split a cannoli 4-ways just to try it. The quality was excellent with fresh clean filling and topping, and a freshly baked crisp sturdy outer shell. Little Italy is great little neighborhood restaurant.
