I visited Little Penang Kafe at KLCC recently for a family dinner, hoping to enjoy familiar Penang flavours. Unfortunately, this turned out to be one of my worst experiences with Penang food in Malaysia.
We ordered several signature dishes. The Penang fried kway teow was extremely disappointing. It lacked wok hei, tasted flat, and bore little resemblance to the authentic Penang version. The noodles were oily yet dry, and the overall flavour was unbalanced. The nasi lemak was poorly presented, with sambal that lacked depth and fragrance. The chicken was especially disappointing, as it was dry, hard, and overcooked, making it unpleasant to eat.
The fried rice and satay were average at best. They were edible but unremarkable, with nothing that justified the premium mall location or pricing. One of the biggest letdowns was the nutmeg sour plum drink, which should be a Penang classic. There was no distinct nutmeg aroma or taste. Instead, it tasted overly salty and sour, without any refreshing balance. It felt more like a poorly mixed drink rather than a traditional Penang beverage.
Service further worsened the experience. The waiter serving our table was not attentive, showed little interest, and came across as rude when we tried to clarify our order. Plates were not cleared promptly, and there was no effort to check on our dining experience.
Overall, this visit was very disappointing. Little Penang Kafe markets itself as a place for Penang comfort food, but what we experienced was far from authentic in taste, quality, and service. Based on this visit, I would not recommend this outlet at KLCC, especially for diners looking for genuine Penang flavours or a pleasant family dining experience.
