ROCHESTER CITY GUIDE

"Rochester's only urban winery, founded by husband and wife team Sebastian [a six-generation winemaker from Adelaide, South Australia] and Colleen [a Rochester, NY native] Hardy. We source grapes from a number of growers, including both of our families, and focus on rich whites and sparklings in the Finger Lakes and vibrant reds in South Australia. Pop in to sip on our minimal input wines, snack on local and Aussie cheeses, or shop for bottles and merch."

We really enjoyed our stop at Living Roots (Urban Winery). Nestled in an area with some restaurants and local breweries, this was our favorite stop during our trip. The architecture of the building is cool, the staff was excellent and the wines we had were great (Nero)! The do not have a full menu, but did offer snacks. The popcorn and chips were both good. The bread was top notch and worth the trip alone lol! The layout is inviting we an "L" shaped bar area and plenty of tables. We also noticed a small private room they must have available for special events too. We did like the vibe and would definitely stop again when we are back in the area! HINT: Note that you do need a code to the door for the bathroom which was spacious and very clean.

Living Roots is doing it right. They have unique wine flavor combos by bringing Australia and the Finger Lakes together. Plus, wine flights which is just a unique and delicious idea. The overall urban atmosphere, vibe, and great service make it a perfect place to stop for a glass or two.

Google
Phenomenal service! The employees are so friendly and attentive. Explained their wines from their whites in NY and their reds made in Australia. Great ambiance and love their wine windows. Order at the window and have a seat outside. Right behind Living Roots is a brewery for the beer lovers. Great selection of wines. A place to stop for a quick sip or spend a few hours enjoying their variety.

Google
My birthday visit to Living Roots was incredible. I worked closely with the winery to make sure I'd be able to have a spot for my party. I had the Aussie Reds flight and the Nero d'Avola was a complete win for me. Connor was our server and he was absolutely delightful. Will be back thanks to the incredible service and wines!

Google
All around the perfect wine bar-style tasting room experience. Unpretentious, reasonably priced, and delicious. As a visitor, a flight was the way to go - but if I lived locally, I could easily see this being my weekly stop for my favorite glass.

Google
We wandered into Living Roots Rochester location on a whim on Mother’s Day this past spring. When I say we fell in love, that would be an understatement. The wine is exquisite; something for every palate. The space is beautiful; inviting and comfortable through the changing of the seasons. The windows are wide open with fresh air in warmer months and the tasting room is cozy during our typical upstate winters. The staff is exceptional and make you feel like you are at home. Ultimately, the ROC location and staff knock it out of the park with their hospitality, space, and most of all their delectable wines. We are so lucky to have them as part of our community.

Google
I love the keuka location and wanted to try this location while in Rochester. The staff, venue, decor and wines do not disappoint. With the well known white wines of the flx region paired alongside great food and reds from Australia, this truly is one stop that everyone in your group will enjoy.

Google
I've been here several times. My first experience was for a Yelp Elite event in the vault. It was great. 6 or 7 winter plus charcuterie, cheeses, fruits and veg. I joined the wine club and have brought several friends for individual tastings since. This was a wine/food pairing class in the vault and my wife's first time there. She had a great time. We bought 3 more bottles (I've purchased many already to share) and we'll be back for more classes.

Yelp
Had to try a winery on our day trip to Rochester . Inside super cute , cute little patio . We sat at the bar . Charcuterie. board was delish and good size . Loved the dry Rose . Service was ok nothing great , i don't think they were very friendly , pretty much there to do her job.

Yelp
I stopped here mid Saturday afternoon to meet with a friend. Service was great. I probably had 4 different people ask if I needed anything while waiting. They gave me samples to try before ordering a glass, to make sure I liked it. Good thing to know also, is that you can order half glasses if you want to get a couple different types. At 2 pm on a Saturday it was pretty laid back, but by the time it was 6, the place was packed and very busy. If you want to avoid the crowd go early. All of the wine I tried was very good. I stayed to the dry white wines. We did order a charcuterie, which took them a while to make, but everything on there was delicious. I will definitely be back to try more wine.

Yelp
Living Roots never disappoints with a great charcuterie board, amazing wine and the best service around. Their servers are nice, knowledgeable and are always checking in. I love the way they offer a local pour to start and love the atmosphere of the place! I just wish they had better parking during the winter months.

Yelp
Absolutely adorable inside. Staff is very helpful and friendly. Loved the wine presentation and can't beat trying kangaroo jerky. The welcome sparkling wine was such a delicious surprise.

Yelp
Delightful trendy wine bar with tasty charcuterie and superb service. Parking a bit limited but worth looking for!

Yelp
Who doesn't love a cozy wine bar!? From the rustic decor, to in-store shopping, Living Roots is is absolutely inviting. My party enjoyed flights and chatting with our lovely and knowledgeable server, Madeline. While it would be nice to be able to create your own personalized wine flight, their menu offers a fair variety.

Yelp
Such a cool, fresh hip use of this loft style space. Came here for a Yelp event and a few girls night outs! Everyone is so friendly and helpful here. There's a nice tasting room and a winery with knowledgeable staff to help when picking out the best wine for you. Nice L shaped bar and a few tables to sit and relax. Really loved their private room, walking through the large very cool vault door( this place used to be a bank) Very cool place to hangout with friends and so many cute gifts to pick up.
google avatar

Yelp
A gem in Rochester. A great place to catch up with friends and try local wines as well as those from Australia. The charcuterie board is so tasty and all the locally sourced items are a bonus. Bright windows and fun tables add to the ambiance. The servers are great and really know their stuff!

Blake L.

Yelp
Amazing people, wine, finger foods and atmosphere. Be apart of the wine club to support their business and amazing wine. Well worth the money for the wine club, because you can try them all each quarter with a sommelier!

Yelp
When I came to living roots wine for a Yelp event. They had a cute bag that comes with pasta sauce, mask, magnet, and gnocchi. The local where you can find this wine shop that you can't miss because it is a huge building and the name of the store is big enough for you be able to see quick. The parking lot is limited in the front of the building. However, I believe you are allowed to park in the back if they are available. I would recommend you to ask them if it allowed before you park there. People at wine was very nice people and greeting us. They have a lot of local wines selling from semi-dry to resling. I am a more sweet wine drinker. I love the way how they organize their wine with labels that tell you where they come from. I would recommend you all to go there if you guys are semi-dry to resling wine drinkers! Thank you for a wonderful experience!

Yelp
Great selection of wines with bartenders that are happy to make recommendations and share their knowledge. Also, get the big portion of the marinated cheese - you won't regret it.

Yelp
Wow. This place is awesome. I had heard of it for a while but I finally pulled the trigger for a night out and I am glad we did. The wines are delicate and yet bold, the service was great, so friendly, the venue is a lovely size, just big enough but still cozy, and the charcuterie board was impressive. I definitely plan on coming back soon!

Yelp
I have to say this was a nice place to go to. They offer such an abundance of so many different types of wine to taste. Our initial reason to try this place was going to be for the wine tour however we were told when we arrived and put in our order that we would not be able to do the wine tour because the owners are the ones who lead the wine tour and they were out of town. I wish that information was available on the website so we would have known that. Having said that, that did not stop us from trying a lot of different types of wine and food. We ordered the Charcuterie board and the crostinis with the wine and I must say everything was so delicious. There were also a few cool things in and around the restaurant. Definitely recommend giving this place a try if you are in the mood for wine!

Yelp
SO grateful and happy to have this one of a kind urban winery in Rochester. Not only do they offer up a huge variety of wines for every palate, but they are true community partners in every sense of the word. I feel like I see them/their brand *everywhere*, and it is a result of how hard they work to collaborate with festivals, agencies, and other local businesses. Their whites don't really speak to me (but TBH most whites don't lately) but their dry Rosè is #1 in my heart. The wide range of flavor profiles is really striking, and their staff is always at the ready to help answer questions and guide you on your tasting journey. Also the CHEESE. Don't sleep on the cheese board, friends. I look forward to my next visit or getting over here for one of their very popular classes through the brainery in their vault space.

Yelp
I am a little conflicted because we have been to Living Roots a few times now. First 2 we loved it! Fantastic bar with luxurious seats, great service and delicious wine. Most recently we arrived at 9:25 after seeing a show. When the bartender asked what we would like we said we were debating between a bottle or flight. Her response was whatever we order it will be our last order since it was the last call in 5 minutes (9:30). We should have left but we didn't. The place was really busy and we thought we probably had until 10 to enjoy ourselves. We were made to feel rushed the entire time like we needed to chug the bottle of wine we had ordered. Between forcing a pour or 'bagging' our bottle, interrupting to close our tab, etc. It was just uncomfortable. Meanwhile there were tables still full around us. I don't mind if they want to close so early but the hostess or bartender should have warned us - 'we close sharply at 10' - 'your bottle must be empty by 9:30' - 'you may not have enough time'.... Instead we felt like a bother in a place we thought we loved. We did find another place to enjoy the rest of our date night so all was not lost.

Yelp
Had a great mom's night out recently with some friends here. I was checked in immediately with a reservation on a busy Saturday night. The atmosphere was chill and relaxing, and exactly what we needed. Our group did some flights of wine, and some desserts/chips. The wait staff was very attentive and explained to us everything. We also loved how they carry local desserts from other bake shops in the area. A tip if you come in a group: They can't do separate checks but in this day and age, you can Venmo or Cash app your friend who pays if you need to spilt the bill amongst your group.

Yelp
Classy and trendy urban winery, a true gem in Rochester! Some of my favorite wines EVER are Living Roots wines. Everyone who works there is so friendly and makes you feel special anytime you go in. Join the wine club - it's worth it!

Yelp
Stopped in for a Yelp Elite related event and took the opportunity to pick up a couple bottles to add to my inspired meal. I didn't try a tasting as I knew which flavors I wanted to try and wanted to maintain social distancing. The space is very clean and fresh. A little cramped in the shop area where you pick up the bottles, but still able to identify wines. They have chilled bottles of the sparkling riesling, ask for it as I didn't see them. They have many local options for purchase such as Hedonist Chocolate, Scratch Bakery, Joe Bean Coffee and The Red Fern. The Sparkling Riesling was nice and crisp! I look forward to trying the Grenache this week with their related local sauce collab. Great Local accent!

Yelp
I was at living roots for a workshop through the Brainery. It's a beautiful space and even though it was clear I wasn't going to order anything, the people were very nice and brought me my own bottled water. I will definitely come back for a glass or two before dinner in the area. The small room (The Vault) was great for the smallish workshop.

Yelp
Great Urban winery right in Rochester. I stopped in to pick up my good bag for an Yelp event. The winery wasn't packed so I had a chance to walk around to check out the wine selection. Great selection and I can't wait to come back with friends and enjoy some of the wine!
google avatar

Kari C.

Yelp
We had the best time here! The views are great. The wines, friendliness of the customer service and much more were also delightful. We ordered a small board and two flights each. There is a nice selection of wines and the staff does an excellent Job of accommodating. My advice is to get there early because seating is limited and this place is popular.
google avatar

Yelp
Sad to say I missed the Yelp event here. But, when I read everyone else's reviews, I checked out their website and signed up for their wine club. I was psyched to see an urban winery with a reasonable club option. Confession: I just stopped in to grab my first wine club package and haven't tried anything yet. But, the space is fabulous! And I'm excited to return! The wine club distributes 6 selections twice a year Members get other discounts on purchases too. And my joining gift were some small art prints!

Yelp
I'm digging your vibes, Living Roots. Shout out to Yelp ROC Community Manager, Breanna B, for introducing me to Living Roots for an afternoon of coworking and delicious wines with natural light flooding throughout. The beams, large industrial windows and charming bank vault private party space truly rolled out the welcome mat. The high tops were conveniently tall enough to serve as a standing desk while we rapped the afternoon on our laptops and tasted their lineup of reds. The menu offers three different flight options Ave glasses starting out at $9. The staff was very friendly and enthusiastic about sharing the background on the wine and business I especially enjoyed the sneak preview of the Cabernet Sav they offered up before we rolled out for dinner This urban winery also featured a private room in the bank vault with loft ceilings, a projector, space for 30-35 guests and skylights that allow natural light in. Overall, a really fun spot to enjoy all hours of the day.

Yelp
I came here thanks to a Yelp event, and I'd never been to Living Roots before. You'd never know how big and beautiful it is inside from the outside! There was also lots of parking for all of us on a Monday night. There's spaces and street parking up front, and more parking in back on Sager. They gave us a glass of sparkling wine when we arrived, and it was my favorite of the night. Then they took us to another room to sample more wine, cheese and bread. The room was really cute, and I loved all the lights and the glasses on the table. It would be a great place for a bridal shower or something like that. I liked all the wines, and even though I don't really like red wine, none of them were too strong. I liked the white and rose best, but if I wasn't driving, I'd have gladly drank any of them all night. Everything we had was great, but I LOVED the sheep and goat cheese mix in the jar, so I bought some to bring home. That will be my new spread for the holidays and parties and stuff. It's soooo good! When I go back for more of that, I'll probably pick up some wine, too. Like I said, all of them that we tried were good, so it's good stuff. If you haven't been, go check it out. They also do classes and tastings. It's a very cool place, and I'll be back.

Yelp
Great neighborhood winery! Clean, cozy establishment with a super wine selection! Try the Dry Rose. Staff was beyond friendly! Perfect place to go for a lazy Sunday @
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
This is a great and unique urban winery in a beautifully refurbished old factory building. The staff are very knowledgeable about the wines and the wines are very well done. They are a little more expensive but I attribute that to the unique business model of having Finger Lakes and Australian wines. They are not like any of the other wineries in the region. They will definitely be a regular stop.
google avatar

Nish N.

Yelp
Another surprise on my latest trip to The Roch. Very interesting wines and grapes, a mix of Australian and Finger Lakes, and it works. Our waiter was cool too, turns out he worked out of Napa and at one point Dominique Crenn... definitely a strong indication that my hometown is becoming part of its own wine region!
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
I've never been to an Urban winery but I'm glad I decided to stop in to Living roots tasting room! My wife and I stopped in after receiving a Yelp elite perk and decided to stay for a tasting. The tasting was fabulous! I can't say every wine was my favorite but I definitely found some that I liked and my wife talked me into buying a bottle of Riesling. The service was warm and inviting and very hospitable! We were so happy we took advantage of the situation and now we are customers! If your looking for a good way to end or start a day or night with some people you enjoy the company of, definitely pick the Living Roots tasting room for a start or ending you won't regret it!

Yelp
Living Roots works hard to quietly maintain Social distancing and great service, offerings. As a Wine Club member I get their emails. It's hard to believe that it's been three years since they opened the tasting room and invited the Yelp Elite to an event. I've been hooked ever since. Here's the email I just received - some anniversary celebration events. 10 Nov. 2020 We're also celebrating our three year anniversary since opening the tasting room and releasing our first wines, and so we have a couple of specials this week.  We're serving Aussie-style lamb or veggie pies both in the tasting room and to-go, and are offering a pretty nice deal on bottles to-go now through Sunday, November 15.  13% off for the general public, and 30% off for Club members!

Yelp
A wonderful place to spend time with friends or a date. I was able to even enjoy the coziness of their vault room. It was filled with plants that adorned the wall and a gave a view of their wine making room from the two windows in the room. Such nice ambiance and amazing wines right in Rochester, NY. If you're looking to spend the even tasting great wines, this is the right place. They have four flights to choose from and they are a great mix. I was able to enjoy Australian wines and local products that created the perfect charcuterie. Highly recommended Living Roots!

R M.

Yelp
Some of the best service in Rochester. The guy working the host stand and serving at the bar could not have been nicer and more accommodating. Amazing wine selection, even better service. 5/5
google avatar

Yelp
I went to living roots with my roommates for their birthday and we both loved Living roots. I got the red wine flight and she got the white flight and we both loved our selections! Both were an extremely reasonable price with a good pour in each glass. My personal favorite was the Lilly Pilly Pinot noir (very nice and light with berry undertones). Our server (I believe her name was Juliet) was awesome and super helpful in making suggestions particularly the cheese plate! I would highly suggest, it was a very nice pairing with the wine. Overall the place was quaint, had a nice selection, good vibes and helpful staff!
google avatar

Yelp
Service, food, wine selection and atmosphere were all excellent. Highly recommend a visit to this cool place.

Yelp
SO CUTE!! the ambiance is great for meeting friends or a date. They have wine flights and the charcuterie plate was a really nice compliment to the wine!

Yelp
I went here for the first time last week for a cookie class through Roc Brainery, and I have NO idea why I haven't come sooner! It is absolutely stunning, the staff is all wonderful and was extremely knowledgeable about the wine and process, and (most importantly) the wine was awesome. I got a Gewürztraminer, which is my favorite and often hard to find, and my sister in law got the Vignoles. Both were really, really fantastic and well balanced. The space is light and open, with lots of natural light, with plenty of seating. We didn't try the food, but the menu was more extensive than I had anticipated for a winery! The back space where the class was held was also gorgeous, with plants all over the walls and plenty of space for gatherings. Had I know, I would have had my bridal shower here! I will definitely become a regular here!
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
Very much a fan of their wines here! I had bought a bottle on one of their Rieslings at a store that I really loved, so I decided to check out their wine bar in the city with my husband. We ordered flights which ended up including almost every wine that was offered, and not one was a disappointment! Nice comfortable open space, with lots of light Employees all were very professional and informative. Definitely a local gem.

Yelp
I'll own this right away. I'm a beer snob, yet enjoy wine- but no tasting pro! But I have loved all of my visits. On my last visit Adam, the amazing server, made my guest and I feel so welcome- and fully Covid safe. The wines were all great. My guest had the dry Riesling- FANTASTIC. I was in a beer mood and they had local brews to choose from! I had a Sager dark brew- also wonderful. (Sager is right next to Living Roots). Strongly encourage all the wine snobs and anyone who love someone who is a wine lover to visit the best winery in Rochester.
google avatar

Bobby F.

Yelp
Great little stop. Have been working on stopping in here since they opened. Owned by a couple - one from the local area, and the wife who is from Australia. Unique selection and opportunity to stock and present wine from both counties. Surprisingly affordable. I recommend getting a flight. They're presented with a little description of each - so you can read the flavors you should be tasting. Plenty of parking around the renovated industrial complex. I also hear there may be an attached venue hall. Great music too!!!
google avatar

Jenna F.

Yelp
Super cool place with outdoor and indoor seating. The staff is well versed in all the details of the wine and the history behind the owners story. Very cool place to check out will definitely go back
google avatar

Yelp
Did a wine tasting at Living Roots and had a great time! The atmosphere and service is great and they have a huge selection of wine to taste and to buy to take home. They also have a very good selection of snacks. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Parking meh at 5:00 on a Friday but the building is lovely inside. The signs do say spaces are available after 4:00 but it was still packed. The wines were delicious and the setting is quite appealing. We spent time in the private room which probably sat about 16 at the table and has presentation capabilities.
google avatar

Yelp
I went for the first time this weekend as was thoroughly impressed with the atmosphere, helpful staff, and of course the wine! It was a wonderful place to spend an afternoon catching up with friends. Just an FYI, they only serve snack type food.

Yelp
Service: This was my second time here, and it's been consistent both times, Living Roots is just a bit slow to start. There has been something happening each time that results in us waiting for several minutes to order. I can appreciate the hand crafted nature of things which is why I've still given them a 4. I think the pros outweigh the cons, but waiting upwards of 5 minutes to order, and then an additional 15 for a cheeseboard to come out, is excessive. Food/Wine: I love the little bites they offer. Their rotating marinated cheese options and local cheese options paired with preserves, dried fruit, and honey comb always please. A table cheese was on the board this time around and it was alarmingly hard, like a cheese you've left out for too long. I understand table cheeses tend to have a more firm texture, but even the coloring was off. For $18, I expect the cheese to be up to par. They've also added some **VEGAN** options which opens up the venue to so many people. I didn't order the vegan options but they now offer a mushroom pate that can be ordered individually ($12) or as part of their vegan charcuterie ($18) paired with dried fruit, preserved watermelon, mushroom jerky, and other nibbles. You'll also find some Red Fern cookies for sale. I'll have to come back with my sister to try! I love their flight options- you can choose from whites, full bodied whites, reds, and lighter reds/rose flights. There is something for everyone. Their prices are leaning towards the higher end and I think the experience is SO close to being worth it. The inside of Living Roots is stunning and conveniently located on University. Beware of parking as it tends to fill up quickly. Work on the efficiency at the front of house for a 5-star experience.

Yelp
Um, an urban winery? Love it, thank you. This is such a great place to hang out and just exist. The environment and atmosphere is lovely--white exposed brick, house plants, wood floors. I am never quite ready to leave, and may just start bringing a a laptop to do some work over rose or Riesling. They produce wine with grapes from the Finger Lakes and Adelaide, Australia (side note: YAY! My husband and I took a trip there a few years ago and were blown away by all the fantastic wine from this region that we couldn't get in the US.) they have several flights but you can also do half and full glasses. After a few sips of my flight, I marched over to the counter and joined the wine club. They also have munchies and snacks. We've indulged in the cheese-only board and also the meat and cheese board. Both stellar. The honey and jams are out of this world and work so well with the goat cheese they include. Love that a taste of the finger lakes (and Australia) are a bit closer. Highly recommend coming by yourself with a book(more honey for you, duh) with a partner, or with a group of friends. And pro tip: join the club. It comes with Discounts on tastings and snacks and purchases and a little box of liquid goodness to look forward to (side note: the booklet on the wines in our box is of such high quality, I love it). My only critique is that I wish we could get boxes more often. Our August box is already well on its way to being gone

Yelp
Living Roots is a very inviting place to enjoy a glass of wine and relax. The interior of the place feels industrial and urban which I very much enjoyed. Tall ceilings, some high top tables and a very inviting bar. My party had individual flights of wine before heading off for dinner. It was a fantastic group of wines and the server even topped us off with a complimentary few sips of a bubbly he had open and was ready to kill. Bonus! We also snacked on the marinated cheese with bread and some nuts/seeds they offered to sprinkle on top. I almost wanted to skip dinner and just eat more of that. I'm from out of town but would certainly visit this place lots more if I lived closer.

Yelp
What a lovely space downtown. A great addition to the happy scene or for a date night. I loved the ambiance and the knowledge of the staff. I did the #4 flight. The Sauv blanc was delicious, as I had hoped coming from Australia. The rest of the flight was sort of "meh." I'd love for their to be more variety, especially in red offerings. We also did the American cheese plate. It was quite good but again, no way to choose what you'd like. There are lots of potential partners here in the finger lakes for that. I did appreciate the fresh and plentiful bread offered with it! I will be back and hoping for more variety next time.

Yelp
This place is sexy. Slink right into that brick building and enter a chic little winery. This is such a great date spot. There are giant windows to let in that natural light and peer outside, larger tables for group tastings, and a bar if you want to stand and chat there. The flight of Australian reds were fantastic. All were smooth, and I liked all of them. The red flight is $9, and the white flight is $7. Additional tastes are $2 a pop. You can order most of the wines by the glass for $8. If there is a wine that you love, they have them in bottles in their open concept retail nook. The bottles are pretty expensive, but as Emily said, the imports create that. Most of the bottles ranged from $26-$32. They do offer light bites of NY cheeses (they also sell Jake's Aged Gouda in their retail space mini fridge), and marinated fresh cheese from Meredith Farm in Victoria, Australia. Gluten Free crackers are available upon request. They have olives, Hedonist chocolate, marcona almonds, and carmelized walnuts as well. I came here for a lazy Sunday afternoon, but this space would also serve as a formidable pre-dinner glass of wine on a night out.

Yelp
Came here for the first time to attend a tasting for Yelp Elite squad :) The building looks nondescript from the outside with plenty of parking. The tasting room is big with high ceiling. The space makes you feel welcome and comfortable to be there. There are many living plants in the room, one of which has reached the ceiling. The grapes are from the finger lakes and Australia. I really liked the sparkling riesling, dry riesling 'linden blossom', rosé 'eastern bud' (maybe it's the name; I forgot to take a pic). The three reds have zero residual sugar, medium body and taste very tangy on the tongue. I would need some food to pair them with. The charcuterie plates were excellent, especially the honey that came with a bit of its comb. It had a strong taste, syrupy viscosity and very sweet. The cheese marinated in olive oil is similar to an aged goat or a soft feta, and goes well on the fresh hot bread.
