This family run motel has gotten a variety of poor reviews that made me very worried about staying here. All I wanted was a clean room to get a good night’s sleep. And that is exactly what I got! This is not a modern hotel like the ones surrounding it. The railroad tracks were worrisome (when’s the train coming?). Apparently a train does come along every now and then, but not on any kind of regular schedule and it would affect all of the nearby hotels not just this one.
I arrived 20 minutes before the 4pm earliest check in and found an empty front desk with a friendly note asking guests to call if they needed help; which I did. The host was cleaning rooms at the other end of the hotel, so I just sat outside, enjoyed the view and waited. Check-I. took quite a bit of time vs a chain hotel, but nothing crazy; I enjoyed good conversation with some other guests.
The rooms: door locks were Yale keypads like you’d buy for your front door. Odd but functional. The room was western styled with a bunch of neat, well thought out little touches. Again - quirky, but I sensed a personal loving touch vs a big corporate machine.
The room was SUPER clean. It had everything you’d expect, including a full-size Keurig vs the dinky solo-cup version that is so common. Satellite TV was also available.
Speaking to the poor reviews: yes, I could see service might be slow if you need it. There was only 1 staff there. But I didn’t have any issues. Beds: the mattress was not to my personal preference, but it was clearly fairly new and good quality. HVAC; the room had a mini-split heat pump with remote and very clear instructions. It worked quickly and pretty quietly compared to many other hotels I’ve experienced.
The whole place had a rustic DIY western vibe that some might not like, but it is clearly advertised as a themed motel. It was not flash, or modern (good luck charging a family worth of tech), but it was clean, the host was friendly, and the location is A+ when it comes to park access. Truly the only nit I could pick is that the exterior doors are loud if someone lets them slam. As I tell everyone, for campsites and hotels: always bring ear plugs!
I thought the price a bit over the top for the amenities included, until I realized the park connection and looked at the hotel prices elsewhere in town. Yes - still a bit steep, but not outrageous. I was happy to pay a family run business vs a big chain.
At the end of the day, I had a good night’s sleep and was able to hit the road again refreshed.
If you’re visiting with kids and headed to the park, I think they’d really get a kick out of this place.
Summary: quirky but nice western themed (did I mention horse friendly?) hotel.
