The Oldest Living Things in the World

"The Llangernyw Yew is an ancient tree, growing in Conwy, Wales. The tree is estimated to be between 4,000 and 5,000 years old, although dating yew trees is notoriously difficult thanks to the tree’s core having been lost to the ages. Its cleft trunk appears as a living portal to the world of the dead, with a small field of tombstones resting just on the other side of wooded gateway.  Were its true age to approach the older side of the spectrum, this dates the yew to the Bronze Age, before Christianity’s arrival in the British Isles. This makes the Llangernyw Yew a likely candidate for one of the oldest still-standing trees in Great Britain. Due in no small part to this, the yew was designated as one of the Fifty Great British Trees in 2002.  Adding to the tree’s mystique is its role in to Welsh mythology, according to which the tree is often associated with a spirit known as Angelystor, or the “Recording Angel.” Each year at Halloween the Angel speaks a prophecy foretelling the names of parishioners destined to die before the next Halloween from the altar of a nearby church. Those wishing to find if their names were among the angel’s list gather beneath the east window of the church, and listen very closely.  The yew’s spirit of Angelystor has yet to be scientifically tested, but similiar to the tree’s age, comes backed by thousands of years of written record attesting to its existence." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Beautiful old tree in the middle of a graveyard. Nice for a quick visit if in the area.

Beautiful chapel in quiet grounds, you can park in the old school house just off the road. 4000 year old Yew tree is worth a visit as its inside the chapel grounds.

This tree, growing quietly in a tiny churchyard, may be the oldest non cloning tree on the planet. It has been investigated and found to be between 4,000 and 5,000 years old, potentially rivalling or surpassing Methuselah in age. But whereas Methuselah looks like a half-dead needle, the Llangernyw Yew looks ancient but supremely healthy. It is currently sending live wood and roots over dead bark, which further amazed me. Yews are almost immortal, and this is no exception. Only truly surpassed by the Fortingall Yew in age and size. Absolutely incredible landmark, well worth a visit

It is truly humbling to be in the presence of one of the very oldest living things on the entire planet. Older than the Egyptian culture, nearly older than the civilised human race. And she’s just sat there, quietly sleeping while a tiny church and a sleepy Welsh village has grown around her. If only The Old One could talk, what words of advice would she tell us?

It’s definitely a huge yewtree and the age of it is also very impressive, but I would not recommend to drive there just for visiting the tree…

It's beautiful and surprising - so bushy and cool underneath. I really enjoyed standing on a sunny Thursday looking at this very old tree in a quiet churchyard. The church itself was closed but, for me personally, it was worth it. It's probably a bit of a drive for some, but I'm not sorry I went. It was a good, quiet place to contemplate for a while.
