The Masked Turnip

A great selection of savoury baked goods from several bakeries (they have loads of other things like pastries, jams, etc) but I was mainly focused on pies, scotch eggs, and sausage rolls. A wide assortment of flavours (black pudding in a scotch egg anyone?). Bought several savoury items (randomly selected by the staff). Everything was delicious.

We were passing through and stopped off in this little village for a look around. Saw this oggie shop and from the outside everything looked good so we popped in for a couple of giant oggies. We noticed the closing time on the door was 4pm, but this was quickly changed to 3.30pm. The time we were there was about 2.30pm so from that and their attitude I can only surmise they had had enough and just wanted to go home. From the moment we stepped in we felt unwelcome. It wasn't what can I get you, more like what do you want? We had two little dogs and were told very abruptly they weren't welcome, fair enough, but there's a,way to say these things and perhaps have a sign on the door. I noted all the food was either behind glass fronts or up on shelves and other similar places have had no issue. Though I would note the inside didn't look as enticing as the front. Anyway, my partner stood outside with the pups while I ordered. I ordered 2 oggies, 2 cakes and 2 drinks. It came to just over £20. Each part was met with an eyeroll 'and what else, and what else' by staff. What a waste of money. The drinks were OK, though not very hot. The cakes were dry and tasteless, one of which was in a sealed plastic so I doubt was freshly made. On to the oggies. Basically a giant cornish pasty, but nowhere near as good. We had a beef one and a lamb one. We ate half each of the beef for dinner that evening after warming in the oven. First of all there was mostly potato filling, and some onion shoved in near the crimped edge. The beef filling when you got it was nice but not enough given the thickness of the pastry. It was way too stodgy and glutinous and not much flavour otherwise. A real let down. To top it off through the night my stomach was making all sorts of unhappy noises and cramps. My partner tried a little of the lamb one the next day but the pastry was even worse and the filling was just as tasteless. We ended up throwing most away and we hate wasting food! I certainly wouldn't be back to that shop anytime soon. Judging by poor reviews I've since read, lots of day visitors feel the same. I suspect that's the only reason they're still in business at all, all the one-offs, it certainly isn't the friendliness of the staff or the food!

Can't visit Llangollen without popping into the oggie shop. Great pasties. All catered for vegetarian, vegan and gluten free. A new must for me is there cake truffles. Oh so good. 🥰

The location is along the main street, with some outside tables for snacks! Very welcoming and friendly owners! Great Welsh lamb oggie and beef pies 🥧 so tasty. Thanks 👋 👋 loads for the reheating info

I had the beef Oggie and afraid to say it was really poor. The whole thing was so dry and flavourless.

Great little shop with pastries that make me stop in Llangollen when I'm nearby. Had my third visit to the shop this weekend, and went for the giant lamb oggie which was fantastic. Massive pastry packed full with filling, lots of flavour with lamb, mint and potatoes.

An 'Oggie' is just like a pasty it seems to me. We popped in to see a huge range of different fillings of which a handful were vegan. I had a warmed spicey veg vegan oggie & it was gorgeous. They also had the widest range of scotch egg flavours &, again, one was vegan. It had a chickpea coating with a slight chilli tang to & the centre was like a soft cheese ball. well certainly be popping in again when I'm next in Llangollen

Local beers (including a vegan range by Polly’s) and some vegan savoury baked goods: veg rolls, pasties and scotch egg. Tasty fillings.
