10 Best Coffee Shops in Puerto Rico | Condé Nast Traveler

"As the name "Lluvia"—which translates to "rain"—suggests, this cafe sits practically inside El Yunque rainforest . But inside, the gallery, reading library, coffee shop, and restaurant is nothing but sunshine. The outdoor patio, surrounded by a natural green canopy, is an especially comfy area to tuck in and listen to nature’s surrounding chorus. The menu features plenty of espresso drinks, teas featuring tropical fruits—pineapple, guava, passionfruit—served iced or hot, smoothies, and, for those that need something stronger, boozy drinks like ginger martinis." - Kathleen Squires

We went hiking and decided to stop for lunch after reading the reviews for Lluvia and so glad we did. The pizzas were incredible, you can taste the freshness of the dough. Murray's and meatballs were also delicious. Milton was our server and the nicest man. Told us all about how he brought the place to life and had a great time chatting with him. After 13 years of being in business I can see why the reviews are so great. A must stop!

Google
This place is great! I had what I think was the best matcha of my life. The owner and servers are so patient and accommodating (we had a large group and ordered a lot of things). Loved the overall atmosphere. We actually went two days in a row!

Google
Very cool little place and off the beaten path! Stopped here while wondering lost in the area lol. Grabbed a quick bite at this shop, nothing major for brunch. I had the club and the wife had the pesto chicken. The club was bland, absolutely nothing special about it. No seasoning or special flavored mayo. The chicken pesto was good, but also bland in seasoning, needed a little something on the chicken (forgot the pic). The pesto part was delicious. Service was great and they were super friendly. Just unfortunate, they serve good food, but could definitely be elevated just a bit with some seasoning.

Google
A little pricier, but good experience overall. Cappuccino was okay and felt like it relied too much on sugar additives/syrup. However, the pancake was fantastic. The mix of fruit and light powder was perfect. Very well balanced.

Google
This restaurant is clean and beautifully decorated, making for a pleasant atmosphere. We stopped by for brunch on our way to El Yunque Rainforest. Though it took a bit longer for our food to arrive, the wait was worth it. The dishes were fresh and delicious, without being overly salty—a great sign of quality in restaurant meals. Overall, it was a good experience, and I’d recommend it for anyone looking for a good brunch in the area.

Google

Google
We were a big group and they still served us fairly quickly. The pizza was really tasty and fresh, the mezcalrita was delicious. The restaurant is dog friendly which we loved! The staff was really friendl. The menu is on the shorter side, but regardless the options were good. Lastly, the decor and music were great! Perfect place for a drink and good food.

Google
Very fun place, amazing beer, the pizza is delicious and super friendly staff. I would definitely recommend coming with friends to watch the game. Juan zavala is the best

Yelp
Perfect place for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. Very friendly and easy going host, a cute dog running around welcoming, excellent quality of ingredients, comfortable environment, and cosy seatings. Not for fast food. Take your time and sip the coffee.

Yelp
Overall, a solid breakfast/brunch option near El Yunque. Service was great. Owner was very friendly. Our waitress did forget about us after taking our drink orders. To be honest, we also lost track of time because we got lost in a game of UNO. But once we realized she hadn't come back we called her and ordered. After that she was more attentive. Unfortunately, I had eaten an early breakfast and wasn't very hungry. I went light with the Lluvia Salad with a skirt steak add in. It was fine. I did try some of the other dishes my family ordered. The pancakes and eggs were solid. I'll have to return on an empty stomach.

Yelp
Nice restaurant in a great location. Very convenient if you are staying in the Rio Mar Resort or visiting El Yunque. Unfortunately they don't have parking spaces, only street parking. Food was good. I liked the eggs Benedict and the deviled eggs. I tried my son's chocolate chip pancakes and loved them. The Bloody Mary was also good, but very strong. You could taste the alcohol. I would have liked it better with more spice. Service was the best. The owner was very friendly.

Yelp
My husband says it's the best wrap he's ever had. Not greasy, and didn't fall apart. Clearly the work of a master wrap maker. We wish this place was near our home LOL. The nice man from Brooklyn was lovely to chat with. As for my cappuccino? Delicious

Yelp
Food 4/5 - Taste was a 5/5! Lost a star because the fajita sandwich was more bread than anything. Lucky me that PR bread was so fresh and delicious! The waffle sandwich was exactly as described and was tasty. The fresh OJ was perfect. The food was hands down a solid 4/5! Service 3/5 - Some of the specials like steak and eggs we were told weren't available... for breakfast ‍ then we were told by someone else it was. *Friendly suggestion- Have daily staff meetings to update everyone regarding the menu. This way more of us patrons can indulge in this delicious fare! Additionally, we returned the following day for breakfast and they were closed. It was a weekday at 915AM. Unfortunately, that was disappointing bc it's located in an area you have to travel to and we came all that way to not enjoy and unbeknownst to us :-( Posting on social media/ leaving a message on your phone if the restaurant doesn't open on a regular day or at the usual time is important for patrons. I hope all was well! Ambiance - 3/5 LOVE THE BROOKLYN SIGN! A restaurant truly after my own heart! 2 thumbs up overall and would return if it's known that they're open

Mehmet S.

Yelp
Highly overpriced for the food that is served. Would recommend paying to buffet breakfast at your hotel rather than paying the same amount at this place.

Yelp
Amazing experience having breakfast at this local spot! The owner is the nicest and most sweetest host I've met. The guava pancakes are to die for, star of the show hands down! They have wifi and are pet friendly and located on a street with shops and other restaurants. Great spot to eat before heading into El Yunque!
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic brick oven pizza. Burrata was awesome as well. Great vibes and service! Took chocolate cake to go , which hit the spot as well.

Yelp
We had driven by this restaurant on the way to breakfast earlier in the week, and decided to give it a try. We managed to get a spot on the street, but I believe there is a small parking lot right next-door as well. You have to ring the doorbell to be allowed in. It's a very bright open interior, very clean and neat. My boyfriend got bacon waffles, (yes the bacon was baked into the waffle!) and I got guava pancakes. Both were absolutely fabulous! We were stuffed! Definitely one of the most delicious breakfast we had our entire week. I would highly recommend.
google avatar

Amelia R.

Yelp
If you are looking for a great brunch spot here it is! The coffee was excellent, food was good and service was great! I especially enjoyed the breakfast potatoes and would recommend getting those for sure. The parking is street parking, be prepared to do a little walking during busier business hours.

Yelp
What a nice place, hidden in Rio Grande. Very clean, they love dogs, you'll be greeted by the owners dog . Cappuccino was delicious and I had a croissant sandwich, amazing. Naya our waitress was friendly and quick with our order. I will definitely come back for dinner.
google avatar

Lindsey K.

Yelp
What a delight! We stopped for coffee but also got a guava cheese pastry. The owner makes all the pastries herself so you know they are fresh. The coffee is local to the island and rich bodied. We also got the pet and hold the owners dog

Yelp
A gem of a breakfast spot. The most amazing coffee you will ever have. Food is tremendous and fresh. Service is delightful. Was so hungry we forgot to take pictures!

David M.

Yelp
A must stop when visiting Rio Grande and El Yunque. Food is outstanding, had breakfast here twice. They know how to barista a quality espresso drink. The service from David, was exceptional and the local ambience is pure old town Puerto Rico friendly.

Yelp
We love this place! ... and went twice - once in evening for drinks, apps and pizza - all were nice and outdoor space is great We followed up with a breakfast- and had the frittata- not on menu - and they gladly made it

Janice K.

Yelp
What a wonderful gem of a place! The owners are so friendly and inviting, and the food was so good. My friends and I shared the Lluvia salad and the bee sting pizza - amazing! We also shared dessert, the coffee cake and key lime pie, homemade by the owners. Coffee was delicious too. Highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Yelp
I will give them benefit of doubt on two service issue. i switched my order from breakfast sandwich to bacon waffle they misheard me as got waffle sandwich. Waffle itself was room temp and tasted like pre made and sat around. Orange juice was good though was up served to the fancy one when just asked for regular. Place is okay as saw someone hanging out doing coffee shop thing and working on computer.
google avatar

Grace K.

Yelp
Went for breakfast. Quaint little place. You have to buzz the door in order to get in. My cordadito was amazing! And we had waffles that were very good. Place got crowded pretty quick. We saw people had dogs inside to so assuming they are pet friendly. Would come back again.
google avatar

Steven S.

Yelp
Pancakes were delicious, fresh squeeze, orange juice was nice, breakfast burrito was filling. Owner was very attentive.

Yelp
This place is a gem. The ambiance is spacious and bright. The food selection is remarkable and delicious. I also loved the selection of available hot sauce for sale. I've been searching for a papaya-based hot sauce. There's a hot sauce names Marie Sharps sold in Belize but it's mass produced. I purchased three bottles and inquired the possibility of ordering more when I'm back in the mainland. The owner told me that the papaya version is the most popular. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Yelp
Large seating area and good staff. The food portions were large and tasted delicious!

Yelp
Stopped here on our last day on the island. This is a very nice, clean , modern restaurant. Coffee was good & strong. Food was good. My only complaint is the service is slow which wouldn't have been an issue if we weren't on a time crunch today. We had exactly an hour from when we sat down and it took an hour to get our food. The drinks alone took much longer than expected. I would still recommend going here for coffee and brunch when you have the time.
google avatar

Yelp
Still one of my favorite breakfast places when I'm in PR/Luquillo. The place is just so modern looking in the middle of this tropical island and the service is always great. The French toast sandwich is so delicious as well as the avocado toast. Fresh OJ hits the spot to wash it all down. Can't wait to go back when I'm back in PR!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent service and hospitality by the owner. Clean and modern. Banana pancakes were phenomenal. Coffee drinks delicious. My kids' scrambled eggs were cheesy as requested and the bacon crispy. Parking a little tough but love this area outside El Yunque rain forest. Highly recommend for brunch or lunch.

Tamika G.

Yelp
Excellent Choice! We didn't really know where we were going to eat and stumbled upon this beautiful and cozy breakfast/brunch spot. We enjoyed one another and talked - forgot about pictures! Sorry! The drinks were fabulous. Everything was so fresh! The food was just fresh and didn't taste processed. It was revitalizing as we ate. I felt healthy just from eating there! I'm

Yelp
This place is a must-visit! We came here after spending the morning in El Yunque Rainforest and were ravenous on our way back into town. It's located on a charming street with other shops worth exploring. The building and decor are incredibly relaxing and soothing. The staff is very friendly, and the wood-fired pizzas are delicious! The Margherita and Bee Sting pizzas were especially good. I wi

Yelp
Just yummy and healthy food!. Ambiance is also very good. Service amazing!! So glad we chose this for our brunch. The breakfast burritos were delicious also

Yelp
The inside is super clean and the staff is very welcoming. Nice calming music in the background and smiles all around. We ordered a guava lemonade and ginger tea to drink; both tasted good. Started with the bacon deviled eggs as an appetizer. It was okay, it seemed a little bland. Probably not what I'm used to as far taste; I'm used to a slightly sweeter taste for the filling. We ordered the Lluvia Breakfast and subbed out the pancakes for French toast and it was good. Also got the French Toast Sandwich with ham and provolone cheese and it was just as delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best brunch spots I had visit in pr, we were kinda in a rush and scared the food would take long because it just usually does in pr, but the service was quick! And the food was great! Def recommend (:

Ron S.

Yelp
We called and ordered a pizza. It was small. I can't eat cheese so my half had 3 cherry tomatoes, some sauce and c couple of scraps of basil. Not at all what I expected. Parking was impossible and the service was less than stellar. I would recommend skipping this place, it's not worth the hassle.

Yelp
It's supposed to only be closed for a week. We stopped by last week. Again this week. Signage indicates it would be open again this week. Not sure if they have decided to stay closed longer than planned then. I hope we can experience this trip. It's close to the resort. Was closed last week. Driven by it several times since last week. It's actually open today. Yay. The door must be opened by staff to come inside. They check your vax card. It's cute inside. We took the table at the back of the restaurant. James is waiting on us, he's nice. Ordered latte with oatmilk, mimosa with OJ, watermelon fresh juice, a croissant sandwich with Turkey and Swiss cheese, fully fried egg with hash browns, el salsero burrito with home fries, croissant with sauce patty and home fries and 2 honey mustard salads. $56.98 and $19.62 for our two bills today. No avocado for the Turkey croissant since it's not in season at the moment. The latte is good. The mimosa os decent. The watermelon is fresh and okay, not super sweet. This fly keeps buzzing around us while we eat and it's super aggressive too. Not so pleasant. The Salsero burrito, sausage croissant and the Turkey croissants were all yummy. A bit of salsa for the Salerno and some sauce on the croissant sandwiches would have made it even better. The quality of ingredients for their food is all good. The honey mustard salad for $11 is about the size of a side salad, should be maybe $6, not $11. Scant on the honey mustard dressing. I asked for a bit more and the small ramekin is not even 1/3 full, super generous. The dressing is good, it's not too sweet at all. $19.62 for mimosa and a croissant. The rest is $56.98.

Yelp
Great breakfast option, indoor design felt like a euro spot catered to westerners and backpackers. Guava pancakes (5/5) - Guava jam on top super fresh. Would get this again Breakfast platter (3/5) - straightforward platter everything cooked well, bread surprisingly very good

M H.

Yelp
Meh. Went here for lunch on the way to El Yunque based on positive reviews. Do not go here unless you want to wait for a very long time. Fifteen minutes to get coffee. Thirty minutes to get water. Over an hour later, still no food. Indifferent, inattentive waitstaff brushing hair in background (not kidding!) At approximately 1:15 into this experience we get our food but only after getting up and informing staff we are still here. Avocado toast arrived with bread not toasted and with a complete lack of seasoning. Salad was fresh but boring. There were only three other tables seated. Why all the positive reviews?

Ed M.

Yelp
Amazing breakfast and ambiance. Service was fast and food delicious. Visited with my wife and family and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

D A.

Yelp
Very confused about our breakfast experience, Entire restaurant turned over 3 times and still trying to determine why we were treated poorly. I finally asked May we order food please. Most diners were same as us, not locals, and they received proper service. When our food did arrive there were missing items and portions very small. A small place so we saw many others plates with normal portions. Again not sure what we did to deserve but will not be back.

Donae J.

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious. I was informed that the bread for the French toast was made in house and you can definitely tell! It basically melts in your mouth. The service was great and friendly. Overall, it was a great experience!
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
Amazing food...amazing latte! Guava pancakes were the best pancakes I've ever eaten.

Jose P.

Yelp
Great place with a wonderful ambience. Coffee was amazing, strong and best I've had in PR. Breakfast is awesome, everything on the menu is worth a try. If you don't mind the wait - then this is a perfect place for you. The wait is their only downfall but overall will recommend if you have the patience. Just make sure NOT go if you're traveling the same day or go with enough time to spare. Another little bit of inside info is that all patrons must ring a bell to be let in. Usually one of the workers will come open the door personally to allow you in and seat you. If not, other patrons already inside will open the door. Just an FYI

Jesenia A.

Yelp
Wow! The breakfast was so good, the mimosas excellent! The only downside is the parking but overall can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Angel V.

Yelp
They love white tourists. Took a group of Hollywood producers in town scouting and researching a series for development. The crew was mostly POC. Were there for a quick brunch. Only 3 tables being served. We were ignored to the point we had to approach the staff twice. 20 mins later they came to us with an attitude. Not recommending it.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped for breakfast and enjoyed the veggie omelet, bacon and great coffee. The place had a nice atmosphere, friendly wait staff, it was cool and private. We're definitely going to be back
google avatar

Renee B.

Yelp
I was staying nearby in Rio Grande and was told about this cafe. Located right near the rainforest it's a good stop for a nice breakfast or lunch. The space is very quaint and cute. The decor is very sleek and modern but airy and cheery. Staff is friendly and my meal here was relaxing and pleasant. I tried a smoothie that was very good. I also got a veggie black bean breakfast burrito that was delicious. I tried a a couple bites of my dining companions pancakes . They were sooo light and fluffy and probably the best I've eaten , more crepe like than other heavier pancakes. The food is all prepared upon order so the wait time was a little long in case you are in a hurry. But the quality of the food was excellent. They also list that their eggs are locally sourced from a free range farm! Bonus points!!
google avatar

Kim S.

Yelp
Great food, friendly staff, excellent coffee and bakery items. They now have dinner on Friday and Saturday.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
Stopped in after a hike for a quick bite. Overall it was decent, but not memorable. We started with espresso martinis, which were the highlight here. Chocolate lined the bottom of the glass, filled with the martini, and a creamy layer on top. But couldn't taste much alcohol in there. For food, we got the blt grilled cheese and a pizza. The pizza was very generic. Came with a side salad. The grilled cheese wasn't really a grilled cheese - it was a blt with cheese, served on a focaccia. It was ok, but not grilled and not very cheesy. Came with chips. Portion sizes were small for the price. Service was good.
google avatar

Michael N.

Yelp
This has been in the rotation of breakfast restaurants we make sure we go to every year on our trips to PR. We love their coffee and have yet to find a better tasting coffee bean on the eastern side of the island. They also have some tasty guava mimosas. We get adventurous and try other places but none have the nice clean ambiance lluvia has. It's been a staple for us since they opened. FYI the Air Conditioning is PUMPING in there, which feels amazing but does get cold. Enjoy!
google avatar

Mindy G.

Yelp
We ended up here one night after a day at the beach. We ordered two of the gourmet pizzas. That was perfect for the three of us. Being from Chicago, we are picky about our pizza, but this was really good. The staff was very nice and attentive.
google avatar

B N.

Yelp
Very nice eating space. Food was good as was service. I would recommend this restaurant as we will definitely come back!

Lynn C.

Yelp
Wonderful for brunch! It is inside and air conditioned, which was a nice and much needed change of pace! Coffee and lattes are great; they have non dairy milk if that is your preference. We had the bacon deviled eggs, lox & toast, guava pancakes, banana pancakes, and the bacon waffle. All were delicious! Would definitely return and recommend to others!
google avatar

Deanne A.

Yelp
Sophia our server was a breath of fresh air this morning! She was so sweet and attentive. The place is light and airy and you could tell everything was fairly new. It just felt very fresh. There was avocado toast on the menu which I'm sure could have been made vegan without the egg but we only came here for coffee. There were maybe 2-3 other things they I thought could be vegan as well probably by asking! They had nut milk for the coffee. An americano and iced latte came out to around $10. We will probably be back here tomorrow. We saw some people enjoying mimosas which looked great. :)
