Lodi District colony is the area of apartments that are actually not very nice, like social housing, that the government makes available to employees of the various ministries. About 60,000 people live there. A few years ago, the government launched a call to embellish the exterior walls of these apartments by calling writers from all over the world. A nice walk of an hour will make you discover this little known corner of the capital.
Its Delhi’s open air art gallery. The St+Art India Foundation, a start-up that focuses on bringing art to the streets by decorating walls and streetside areas with art, was the brains behind India’s first major street art ‘open air gallery’, the Lodhi Art District. Beginning in 2015, this project has decorated the outside walls of the Lodhi Colony residential area with murals by Indian and international artists. Because the walls are exposed to the elements, the paintings deteriorate over time, but are replaced by new artworks, new artists.
You can drive slowly through Lodhi Colony, or you can walk: in good weather, a leisurely walk of 30-45 minutes should be enough to cover most of the stretch between Lodhi Colony’s Third Avenue and Fifth Avenue (approximately between Lodhi Colony Market and Meharchand Market). It’s a little random; not every building is painted, but it’s fun to explore, and to admire the art. There are lots of different styles and subjects, ranging from dark and edgy artworks to bright, vibrant ones, from portraits (of Birju Maharaj, for instance) to pop art. Very attractive and interesting.
