Neighbourhood spotlight: Lodhi, Delhi - SilverKris

"A vibrant public-art initiative where residential buildings have been transformed into large-scale murals by a not-for-profit foundation, featuring imaginative motifs such as trampling elephants, fire‑spitting dragons and colorful birds with geometric wings, contributing to the area’s reputation as a pioneering public-art district." - Meenakshi J

Lodi District colony is the area of apartments that are actually not very nice, like social housing, that the government makes available to employees of the various ministries. About 60,000 people live there. A few years ago, the government launched a call to embellish the exterior walls of these apartments by calling writers from all over the world. A nice walk of an hour will make you discover this little known corner of the capital. Its Delhi’s open air art gallery. The St+Art India Foundation, a start-up that focuses on bringing art to the streets by decorating walls and streetside areas with art, was the brains behind India’s first major street art ‘open air gallery’, the Lodhi Art District. Beginning in 2015, this project has decorated the outside walls of the Lodhi Colony residential area with murals by Indian and international artists. Because the walls are exposed to the elements, the paintings deteriorate over time, but are replaced by new artworks, new artists. You can drive slowly through Lodhi Colony, or you can walk: in good weather, a leisurely walk of 30-45 minutes should be enough to cover most of the stretch between Lodhi Colony’s Third Avenue and Fifth Avenue (approximately between Lodhi Colony Market and Meharchand Market). It’s a little random; not every building is painted, but it’s fun to explore, and to admire the art. There are lots of different styles and subjects, ranging from dark and edgy artworks to bright, vibrant ones, from portraits (of Birju Maharaj, for instance) to pop art. Very attractive and interesting.

It was very exhilarating experience to watch see feel art on the housing walks. It was also soul stimulating to read artist thoughts Behind his Creation. I saw only few walls But very sad to see the conditions. Half torned posters. Dirty walls I wish the responsible authorities could be little alert and save this unique exhibition. I wish some an be done to preserve Lodhi art district

If you want feel calm in busy New Delhi, I really recommend visit here! The paintings on buildings so beautiful, and streets very quiet, few cars, few people. Can walk slow, enjoy colors and small peaceful moments! You see kids play cricket, jump rope feel easy life of local people😊 I find some small cafes and restaurants around, nice to stop and feel local vibe. I came around 5pm, not hot, perfect for slow walk. Sunset is amazing, really beautiful, don’t miss that time!!👍🏻👍🏻 Walk big around district, then go Lodhi Garden and slowly to Khan Market. Good way see local life and finish evening relax. Perfect afternoon and evening in Delhi

The place is great but its marked wrong on the map. Its actually on the south side of the residential area. The art on the walls are amazing and place is very peaceful if you just wanna have a walk around the place.

A new experience. Not bad place, Arts which I've seen were impressive, I was thinking of artists who did that were very talented to express inner self through colours and shapes, I liked that painting had a message as well. If to tell about practical side, it's located in living quarters, and art walls were not in every House, so roaming around in car or two wheeler is quite convenient to find art objects, rather than walking in hot weather.

Lodhi art district is an absolute hidden gem of Delhi. It’s a perfect choice for a cloudy/rainy day to visit. Beautiful huge arts have been made on the walls of some govt buildings. But the sad part is that many posters have been pasted on these walls which totally destroy the art.

Visited Lodhi Art District on a weekday — peaceful and perfect for slow exploration. The murals are stunning and thought-provoking, each wall tells a story. A hidden gem in Delhi for art lovers and photo enthusiasts alike!

Tucked away in the calm lanes of Lodhi Colony, the Lodhi Art District is one of Delhi’s most unexpected treasures. Since 2015, thanks to the St+art India Foundation, over 50 artists from India and around the world have turned these walls into giant canvases bursting with colour and stories. It’s the kind of place where you lose track of time, strolling past vibrant murals, snapping street shots, or just soaking it all in. The best part? It’s open all day, every day, and absolutely free. Just hop off at Jor Bagh Metro (Yellow Line) and let the art find you
