I booked this hotel for one night as an urban getaway, because I was tired of staring at the same four walls and wanted to refresh my mind and spirit.
My plan was to order a delicious room service dinner, work out at the spa, get a massage, and enjoy beautiful views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. Well, I failed to do my homework, because I just assumed that a very expensive luxury hotel would have amenities to match.
But as it turns out, they have no room service ("because COVID"), no mini-bar, no snacks for sale at the reception desk, and of course the Starbuck's was closed -- in the afternoon! There was literally nothing to eat in the entire hotel -- a good place to starve, in other words.
So I was forced to order Mongolian Beef for delivery from a local Asian restaurant -- and, of course, I had to come down to the lobby to pick it up. The spa was closed, ("because COVID") so no workout and no massage, either. A completely disappointing experience, worth maybe $150, and certainly not the $400+ I paid.
The "COVID" excuse is getting old and tired because other hotels and spas have managed to adapt successfully while keeping their guests and customers safe. I got a massage at a resort a few months ago while wearing a mask -- it was an easy solution -- and I've ordered room service from other hotels since COVID. I think it's just a matter of this hotel using excuses to get away with charging premium prices for lazy and thoughtless service.
