23 Best Hotels in Japan for 2025 Stays | Condé Nast Traveler

"Behind an unassuming 1963 apartment facade on Mount Senkoji’s slope, an arty six-room enclave by Studio Mumbai’s Bijoy Jain wraps bedrooms entirely in gleaming white washi for a cocooning, lantern-like calm—soft futons and, in larger rooms, deep tubs ensure comfort. Open a window and golden light pours over pines, palms, and the free-spirited temple town below. Evenings drift between a lacquered bar pouring local Chardonnay to ’80s pop and a restaurant heavy on vegetables and citrus—bowls of mikan and hassaku among the standouts—delivering a relaxed, contemporary riff on ryokan culture where social barriers crumble and rules bend." - Danielle Demetriou, Adam H. How sleepy Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture became a hub for design and innovation - SilverKris

"A dramatic renovation of a 1960s Shinmichi Apartment Building halfway up Mount Senkoji, this project—opened in December 2018 in collaboration with Studio Mumbai’s Bijoy Jain—functions as an architectural statement and intimate boutique lodging rather than a conventional hotel. Pastel-coloured stucco walls made from earth dug from the hillside, guestrooms screened with traditional Japanese washi paper, and furnishings crafted by Indian and Japanese artisans create a quiet, Zen-like atmosphere; every object is presented as having its own story. Construction and operation contend with a steep set of roughly 100 steps from street level, which shaped decisions about materials, supply logistics and minimizing waste. The on-site restaurant emphasizes seasonal, locally sourced ingredients from boutique producers, while natural paints and the surrounding garden are intended to weather and evolve with the seasons, signaling a long-term commitment to revitalizing the hillside and inspiring younger generations." - Tom Miyagawa Coulton

This building is a harmonious blend of Japanese and Indian cultures in its design. It masterfully utilizes empty space, creating a seamless flow, and pays meticulous attention to the materials and colors used. When light and shadow interact, they cast intriguing dimensions, adding to its allure. The design also tells the story of the architect's journey and inspiration, making it a truly insightful experience for aspiring designers. Perched atop a hill, the building offers an unforgettable stay. With good planning, your arrival will be a joyful memory, met with excellent service and a team that is genuinely lovely and friendly.

Staying at LOG was such a serene experience. From the soothing music playing in the public spaces to the calm colors, ambient lighting, and thoughtful design, every detail complemented the tranquility of the stay. The room was outstanding. The soft light filtering in through the windows gently illuminated the washi paper that covers the floors, walls, and ceilings. Amenities are plentiful, but hidden in drawers, closets, and cabinets so as not to disturb the minimalist design. I’ll admit I thought the room looked spartan when I first saw photos, but it’s just because pictures don’t do justice to the beautiful details of the space. The service was great as well. From check-in to dinner and breakfast, everything was smooth and relaxed. Don’t forget to spend some time browsing the gift shop at the reception, where you can purchase lovely items like teas, ceramics, and amenities from the hotel to take home (like the super comfortable leather slippers provided in the rooms). Onomichi is such a charming town, and staying at LOG really enhanced our experience there. We would definitely return.

Beautiful hotel, lovely rooms. However there is a very sensitive sensor light in the room that cannot be switched off and is really annoying. We were also there first week of April and it was pretty warm and still - there was no option for air conditioning only heating (?!) so it was an unpleasant sleep. Staff not super friendly of foreigners (kept requesting our passports even though we have residence cards as we live here)

“When I imagine LOG… I experience Onomichi with affection and love, stories of a landscape in flux. LOG is a space of respite, a window to a view of passing time, like cherry blossoms in bloom somewhere deep in our consciousness”.

We fell in love with Onomichi, and LOG was the reason why. This isn’t just a hotel; it’s an experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff went above and beyond. Japanese hospitality is already exceptional, but the team at LOG elevated it to an entirely new level. The design of this hotel is simply breathtaking. Every space is thoughtfully crafted to capture natural sunlight, with delicate walls wrapped in stunning Japanese paper. We had both breakfast and dinner at LOG, and each meal was a delight. The fresh, high-quality ingredients were beautifully presented, making every bite memorable. LOG is more than a place to stay—it’s a retreat. Take time to relax, step back, and truly immerse yourself. Whether you’re sitting alone or with a drink from the coffee shop in one of the serene outdoor areas, you’ll find yourself connecting with the surrounding environment. Do yourself a favour: stay at LOG for a few nights. Slow down, savour the moments, and don’t rush the experience. This is a place meant to be enjoyed at its own peaceful pace.

We enjoyed two nights at the LOG. It is set on a hill overlooking trees, the city, and the water, so the views are lovely. The staff were attentive and very eager to please. ||We are active and fit, however it is nonetheless a bit annoying to have to climb 100steps every time one returns to the hotel, so this is an obvious detraction. The other disappointment for us was that there is no spa. We had just finished three days of cycling and were looking forward to relaxing in a Japanese spa/hot tub (which we have quickly grown fond of), only to find we had to make do with the bath tub in our bedroom. ||The building is minimalist and made of concrete, even most of the seating - stylish but not particularly comfortable. It has a youthful, zen vibe. The clientele, when we were there, was much younger than the two of us and apart from us, it was exclusively Japanese. There were lots of Instagram moments being recorded. ||Our room was Japanese style, a very comfortable low mattress with rice paper floor covering and rice paper screens we could open . We had a cute patio with great views but uncomfortable tiny stools to sit on. ||We enjoyed the creative, European-inspired breakfast and the set menu for dinner. Everything was tasty and interesting. The wine and beer list is limited and fairly expensive.||The location of the hotel is convenient (apart from the steps).

My partner and I stayed at Log this April for two nights, and it met and exceeded even our highest expectations. We were enchanted by photos we had seen of the rooms and the exceptional design by architect Bijoy Jain. In person, the hotel and the rooms are even more stunning, as you enjoy the changing light on the beautiful colors, coming through paper and silk screens. Morning breakfast was a multi-course heaven every day, and the hotel staff kindly accommodated me as a vegetarian. Our hotel room was pristine and the most comfortable and exquisite room we've ever stayed in. Beautiful bedding, and romantic sliding screens giving way to antechambers, a luxurious bath, and beautiful views into the harbor. The Log staff is exceptionally kind and gentle and professional, greeting you with a cold tea and taking wonderful care of your needs. If you stay here, try to work in a half day trip to Kohtei at the Shinshoji Zen Museum, which was just a staggering sight in person, and that whole complex (cafes, bath house, etc) makes for a wonderful half day or full day visit.

Stayed one night, very creative and peaceful atmosphere, much appreciated to Mumbai Studio. Although alcohol drinks they serve are bit overpriced on the dinner and bar, the food is natural, fresh and used local ingredients only. If you are ambient music lover you will love the the surrounding sound from your room where has absolutely no TVs, be able to immerse yourself in local culture or meditation. Apparently they have interacted with Meitei (Hiroshima-based Ambient music composer), LOG can be also a pilgrimage to his fans.
