5 Hacks to Pull Off an Affordable Family Adventure

"A nature-focused outpost positioned near Glacier National Park that gives guests ready access to the area’s vast trail network—within striking distance of some 700 miles of hiking—and that’s part of a brand which emphasizes outdoor convenience, often offering rentable gear like bikes and child-carrier backpacks to simplify active stays." - Elaine Glusac Elaine Glusac Elaine Glusac is a writer and travel columnist for The New York Times. Meet the U.S. Tourists Who Only Travel by Train

"In Essex, Montana—a place that has a year-round population of about 140 people—you can find the Izaak Walton Inn, where you can sit on the porch and grab a great meal. You can also easily get to Glacier National Park."

We had a very nice stay during Labor day weekend. We have chosen with my family the cabin. The cabin is well furnished, clean and very convenient for 4 people to move inside. The only downside of the stay is the service. The deskfront was not very friendly to us during our stay in order to answer questions. The restaurant service could use some training in order to better welcome/serve/sell to their guests during breakfast/lunch/dinner. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place in order to enjoy Glacier National park.

This was a very pleasant stay very close to the park. We stayed here for one night on our journey to Many Glacier. The renovation is very well done and is very nice. The rooms have everything that you would need for this sort of trip. I loved that they had an activity in the bar for the evening (trivia) although we didn't participate. We had dinner at the restaurant and it was lovely. No one in my family was bothered at all by the train noise while sleeping as well. I would absolutely stay here again given the lack of nicer options for hotels near the park.

We recently stayed at LOGE for three nights at the tail end of our week in Montana. We stayed in one of the schoolhouse rooms just across the train tracks and up on the hill. The property itself is absolutely gorgeous. So lush and you feel like you are immersed in nature. LOGE did an amazing job at modernizing the property while staying true to the historic charm of the original inn. The restaurant was delicious, same with the cafe :) There is a train track right next to the property but if you know anything about the historic inn, you’d be prepared for that and hopefully appreciate it! We would definitely come back to stay at this place and will think of it often. :)

We stayed in one of the cabins for a few nights and it was perfect for our time exploring the east side of GNP. The cabin was small but had everything we needed. The bed was so comfortable and we slept very well. We also enjoyed sitting on the little porch in the mornings and evenings.

We booked a room to stay here overnight after spending a day in Glacier National Park. My companion had stayed here 20 years ago and liked it very much. We made a mistake. This hotel does not cater to people looking for comfortable accommodations for just one night. It caters to people looking to use the hotel as their base for outdoor exploration. Pros - The room was clean, nicely decorated in a rustic way with a large refrigerator and microwave. The waitress who served us dinner was very kind and accommodating and the food was good. The menu is mostly sandwiches with a few salads and entrees. Cons - Guests staying during the summer months should be aware there is no air conditioning, and our room was not equipped with window screens. We were told that this is a problem on the third floor only because the windows are not of a size for which window screens can be purchased. I've stayed in historic properties without elevators before. Guests should be aware there are no elevators. We didn't see any reviews or summaries on-line mentioning the above facts. Hoping this will be helpful to those considering staying here in the future.

Our family of 3 stayed twice during our 2 week vacation. The first stay was in the Isaak Walton main lodge room (king bed plus bunk bed) and were surprised at the amenities available for use/borrow. There was a Yeti cooler, Rumpl blanket, a hammock all available to borrow. Our room was very comfortable and we slept well with the fan on. There is a railroad that borders the property that may bother some. They provide free earplugs, we brought our own and were not bothered by the trains at all (even with the window partially open at night).|Our second stay was in one of the cabins on the other side of the tracks. It's a short walk from the main lodge or a 10 minute drive (yes, you have to go out to the main road, drive about a mile, then it's back in the woods over a rutted dirt road). The cabin was cozy but perfect for us. There were 2 loft beds and a main floor queen size bed. A small bathroom and kitchenette/dining area provided everything we needed for our stay. We appreciated having a nice shower after long hikes.|We had great service for both stays, the front desk staff was friendly and helpful as well as the restaurant staff. Our breakfasts and dinners were top notch!|Overall, a great stay both times!||To the management: Please consider turning down the hot water heater on the cabins. We burned ourselves a couple of times trying to adjust the shower temp. As adults, we are fine, but this could be a hazard to littles/elderly. Also, I'm not sure if it was just overlooked in our unit but there were no kitchen towels or paper towels. Not a big deal but it would have been helpful. I did the dishes but didn't have a way to dry them.

My stay here was absolutely amazing. This beautifully restored railway lodge from the early 1900s is full of charm and character. The hotel caters perfectly to travelers looking to experience everything the area has to offer. The rooms came equipped with YETI coolers that we were able to take on our day trips, which was a thoughtful and super convenient touch. They also offered bike rentals for the week we could use whenever we wanted—such great perks that really added to the experience. The on-site restaurant was delicious with fair prices, and there's a separate bar on the property that's a great place to relax and grab a drink. I also loved the many outdoor seating areas and fire pits—perfect for unwinding in the evenings. The staff were incredibly welcoming and attentive, and the hotel management is truly top-tier. The location is ideal—just a short drive to Glacier National Park and other local attractions—yet the property still feels peaceful and private. Highly recommend this hidden gem to anyone visiting the area!

We booked last minute in one of the cabins. You have to take a fire service road to reach these, about ten minutes from the main hotel, just FYI. ||But you can reach the main area from your cabin via a bridge over the railroad tracks in just a few minutes. ||The site was so unexpected - it feels very remote (no signal for miles) and yet the hotel is surprisingly well done and the restaurant onsite is wonderful. The location is so peaceful!||The cabin was so cozy - without feeling rustic. The two loft bed areas were prefect for our two older teens to have their own spots to sleep and hang out and still have a small bedroom space for ourselves. ||It’s about a 30 minute drive to the West Glacier entrance from here. But if you’re looking for peacefulness without feeling like you’re off the grid, this is a great spot to consider.

Yelp
A very seamless experience! The lodging we stayed in had everything we needed. Housekeeping was very accommodating.

Yelp
Everything about this location was fantastic. The restaurant is incredible and served what was perhaps the best tuna fish sandwich I have ever eaten outside of my mother's kitchen complete with crushed potato chips inside the bread. The Huckleberry ice cream was great as well. The rooms were Minimalist, but had everything you could need for your stay. We had a problem with hot water the first night, but after that, everything seemed to be fine. This location is on the site of an old railroad Depot and several of the rooms are renovated rail cars. We were in the main inn; we use the washing machines and dryers. The sauna was opened, but the hot tub was not as we went very early in the season. The hot tub is located among a Grove of trees that must be amazing in the summer. Although the staff were and there were some conflicting information about various amenities, for the most part, they really were there to make, everyone comfortable. This hotel was close to the park entrance and so it was easy getting into glacier. I would stay here again.

Yelp
I wrote a review over at the Izaak Walton Inn Yelp site. But in case this becomes the new site for the inn, I included my review here too... The LOGE Camps chain of motels are geared towards outdoor enthusiasts/adventure tourists, like my partner and me! We intentionally stayed here in October 2024 on our visit to Glacier National Park because we wanted our home base to be at a place where we could drive to both East Glacier and West Glacier and be relatively not too far from either. While this LOGE has diverse room stay options, such as train cars, an old school house, and cabins, we opted to stay in a "standard room" in the historic Izaak Walton Inn. I think the LOGE folks quite recently purchased the inn and were still ironing out some kinks. For example, their gift shop was not yet open and the restaurant were consistently out of some beverage and food options. A few notes: -The staff were warm and courteous. They really helped create a homey, family vibe. -They don't clean your room everyday, and no phone in your room as you communicate with the staff via text, but they have these small cool touches like plug-in shoe warmers in your room to dry your wet boots, as well as other outdoorsy amenities (see pics). -They also lent out bear spray for free so that we didn't have to buy a canister, which we really appreciated. (Thankfully, we didn't have to use it, despite seeing A LOT of grizzlies on the trails.) -The hotel is located pretty close to the train tracks, and while trains were coming and going pretty frequently, they didn't ever bother us. No problems falling and staying asleep. -The restaurant and bar at the place had pretty decent food and drinks. -The place is a bit pricey, but I guess that's to be expected for the boutique hotel experience and most places in the vicinity are closed. We would recommend this place and would likely stay here again for future Glacier National Park excursions.

Yelp
We took the opportunity to have lunch at LOGE Glacier aa we drove through the Park. We had a lovely lunch of a bowl (huge) of roasted red pepper and tomato soup, served with a salad and a cheddar biscuit. The highlight of our time there was definitely our server, Kiana. She was helpful, engaging and brought her happy spirit to our experience. While everyone was pleasant, Kiana made breaking up a very long drive refreshing! Thanks so much!

Yelp
Had a nightmare of an experience. We were put in a room on the train track side of the property where the noise from overnight work on trains was so steady and so loud we could not sleep. We also had to listen to other guests chatter until 12:40 AM. The hotel cheaps out on costs by having no overnight staff so we were unable to address either problem. The owner's response to our complaints the morning after was that it was to be expected and some people actually like that experience. Well, needless to say we won't be back. The favorable reviews you are reading clearly were not in the terrible room locations which we were subjected to. Just be careful when you deal with this owner.
