Auberge de Chavannes

"What with its delightful little cities, great restaurants and stunning scenery, it’s only a matter of time before the Jura, a beautiful region of pine-covered hills in eastern France, is discovered. This is why the simple but stylish and very comfortable new ten-room Auberge de Chavannes by one of France’s most talented young chefs is so welcome; it makes a great base from which to visit the region and chef-owner Nicholas Pourcheresse’s cooking is so good, you’ll want to be back for both lunch and dinner. The largest neaby town to miniscule Courlans, Lons-le-Saunier, where La Vache Qui Rit cheese is made, may not be Ian Schrager territory, but these good-looking rooms with air-conditioning, dark stained floors, flat screen TVs, spacious showers with pebble-paved floors, and Moroccan lamps, pillows and other accessories have the winsome allure of a young talent striking out on his own. Further, they offer a welcome alternative to the plastic-ridden chain hotels that dominate the room offer in most small French provincial cities, and offer a lot for the money. In effect, what Pourcheresse has done is update one of the loveliest of all Gallic traditions—the wayside auberge where you both eat and sleep memorably well—for a new century. Be sure to book a table in the restaurant when you reserve your room, and don’t miss Pourcheresse’s mussels smoked with vine trimming or declinaison de canard—duck prepared in four different ways. Try some of the Jura’s ballsy and relatively little-known wines with your meal, too."

This restaurant was an incredible surprise during our trip. Despite arriving late and just after a long lunch, we were only in the mood for a light dinner. The owner welcomed us warmly, setting the tone for a fantastic experience. The service was exceptional, the food absolutely delicious, and the wine list was among the best in the Jura. I can't recommend this place enough and will definitely make a point to return on my next visit to the Jura. A must-visit!

A perfect place for a stop over, about a 6.5 hour drive from Calais and less than 3 hours to the French Alps. Spotlessly clean and inviting with friendly, helpful and professional service. The jewel in the crown is the on site restaurant - excellent quality food to start, or finish, your holiday. Excellent selection of quality local wines. We really enjoyed the breakfast as well.

A very comfortable bedroom. Well equipped with a large bed. Madame was really helpful and speaks English. The room was reasonably priced. There is a restaurant at the hotel which is expensive but absolutely delicious and we possibly had our best meal there in over 3 weeks of being in France.

We came across this hotel by chance due to needing emergency accommodation after our campervan broke down. This is a lovely place - very tranquil and calming gardens. They had a great supply of local wines, beers and soft drinks. Our room was comfortable and stocked with lovely locally made toiletries. The customer service is superb. The couple who run it were extremely helpful and empathetic towards our situation. A lovely breakfast as well with homemade pastries and cakes as well as savoury options. We would definitly stay here again.

The hotel and restaurant are very good. For a delicious dinner (with local products), an overnight stay in a beautiful and special room, and an extensive breakfast with homemade food you have to be here. The personal touch makes it complete, the love for the hotel and restaurant can be felt everywhere in the building. Very nice and helpful hostess.

We enjoyed our stay so much last year we booked in for another two nights on our way south. Returning to somewhere you really enjoyed before is sometimes a mistake but everything was just as fabulous as we remembered it. The room was clean and comfortable with an exceptionally comfortable mattress. Service was attentive without being intrusive. We ate in the restaurant both nights and had some exceptional dishes accompanied by local wines. Many of the dishes are based on produced grown in the small garden and breakfast was a great selection of fruit, bread, cheese, meats and homemade jam. We hope to return in the not too distant future.

We stayed two nights and would love to have stayed longer. Our room was beautifully designed, spacious and had the most comfortable bed I've slept in at a hotel. The large bathroom had a walk-in shower and everything was spotlessly clean. The breakfast was amazing and the owners were really friendly and welcoming. The room had airconditioning and despite being close to the road was really quiet. The hotel is in an ideal location to explore the local area. The food in the restaurant is outstanding.

We enjoyed an excellent 5 course dinner with selected wines from the Jura region. Fantastic! Very nice clean room. Service at its best, very friendly and helpful hosts. Charging of our electric vehicle (11 kWh) gratiously offered. We'll be back for certain 😎
