Have visited this hotel before during the past 3 years (apols, haven’t reviewed it earlier). The situation is exactly right for anyone heading farther south or south west as we were - it’s an easy drive (3.5-4hrs from Ouistreham), and in need of a stop-over, or to visit the local attractions.||The small hotel is well restored with several rooms having views across a pretty garden. On our latest visit we were allocated a first floor room accessible by outside staircase. The room was just fine: cool, comfortable, well fitted etc. BUT I didn’t like the staircase - treads quite narrow, slippery when wet, and wet wood is difficult to see clearly at dusk and in darkness - the lighting was poor. There is also an awkward, thin door step/metal strip requiring a step over (whilst propping open a particularly heavily sprung door, at the top of the stairs) and when carrying luggage. So, on our next visit I’d specify a ground floor preference!||Restaurant is potentially excellent - indoor and outdoor eating on warm summer nights - we’ve had some inspired meals there over the last few years - and always some excellent local wines recommended by a knowledgable sommelier. However, (beginning to sound as if we drew a short straw this time around!) on our last two-night visit, (we stayed Sunday and Monday) we were told the chef wasn’t working. Two evening meals were terribly disappointing - no real choice, bland, boring, uninspired presentation and, well, just dull. Anyone visiting for a first time on either of those nights would be unlikely to return, I should think.||Did consider awarding just 3 green blobs ... but will give the pleasant, friendly management team the benefit of the doubt... we’ll just have to check stay times in future to coincide with the regular chef’s working night....and opt for a ground floor room. Will definitely visit again.
