14 Best Hotels in Philadelphia

"When it opened in early 2019, Lokal Fishtown was only the neighborhood’s second hotel. Shocking, considering the neighborhood continues to be one of the city’s buzziest places to eat, drink, shop, and hear live music. One of four locations in the homegrown brand’s collection of “invisible service” hotels—meaning there’s no front desk or concierge. This outpost was built by local, Philadelphia makers—everything from the stylish spaces, to plants from 2nd Street greenery shop Stump, to custom beds made by neighborhood furniture maker Farmhaus Modern, to each framed artwork, block-printed pillowcase, and ceramic mug. This all adds up to a beautiful, cohesive space that communicates the vibe of the neighborhood before you ever leave the room." - Regan Stephens, Katie James Watkinson

Lokal Hotel Fishtown

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? The entrance to the building—the facade a handsome, modern mix of massive windows, black brick, copper, and formed-board concrete—is next to the El train on one of Fishtown’s main corridors. Guests get access to their apartment electronically, via a mobile app, though an in-person welcome can easily be pre-arranged. What's the backstory? When it opened in early 2019, Lokal Fishtown was only the neighborhood’s second hotel. Shocking, considering the neighborhood continues to be one of the city’s buzziest places to eat, drink, shop, and hear live music. One of four locations in the homegrown brand’s collection of “invisible service” hotels—meaning there’s no front desk or concierge—this outpost was built by local, Philadelphia makers. From the architect and interior designers who envisioned the stylish spaces, to plants from 2nd Street greenery shop Stump, to custom beds made by neighborhood furniture maker Farmhaus Modern, to each framed artwork, block-printed pillowcase, and ceramic mug. This all adds up to a beautiful, cohesive space that communicates the vibe of the neighborhood before you ever leave the room. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book?Six units range from studio apartments to the “Big Jawn”—a 1,000 square foot, two-bedroom duplex with an eat-in kitchen, bar, and living room. Fishtown-based design and tattoo studio True Hand Society conceived the hotel’s interiors, giving each a clean, Scandinavian look with plenty of character from locally-handmade furniture, lighting, artwork, planters, and textiles. One of the two bathrooms is outfitted with a massive soaking tub, and stocked with products from local skin care product line Duross & Langel. Mattresses on the queen beds are Casper, and linens are Parachute, which might make you feel right at home. Of all the lovely units, the Garden Jawn is my favorite, with an entire wall of windows and a door that leads directly out to a semi-private area of the quiet rear courtyard. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi?There’s free, high-speed internet access in the entire building. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at?Full kitchens in every unit are equipped with dishwashers, dining ware, and all the elements to make your morning hot beverage (coffee from local brand Rival Bros., tea from Steap and Grind). Cocktail-making accoutrements like seasonal recipes, shakers, and rocks glasses come from local shop/bar Art in the Age. iPads are loaded with food delivery apps—Instacart for groceries, Caviar for meals, and GoPuff for beer and snacks—and whatever you order goes directly to your bill. While this is a nice touch for travel-weary visitors, the apartment is in the epicenter of some of Philly’s best restaurants and bars, including Pizzeria Beddia, Suraya, and Johnny Brenda’s. (iPads are also loaded with staff recommendations for dining, drinking, shopping, and more.) And the service? “Invisible service” means the brand leans on technology to make check-in, dining, exploring the neighborhood, and everything else about your stay, seamless. Recommendations—from cocktails to shake up in the kitchen to the best dive bar down the street—are thoughtful, and make it feel like a local friend left you a list of all her favorites. What type of travelers will you find here?Instagram influencers. Visitors from Brooklyn or the Hudson Valley, with entourages in tow: the photographer, aka husband, plus adorably-dressed children. Also, young, savvy guests who are part of a growing group that travels differently than their parents and grandparents did. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? If your goal when visiting is to go beyond the city’s historic treasures and popular tourist draws, Fishtown is the place to get a true taste of the new, vibrant Philadelphia. The neighborhood is arguably the epicenter of the city’s buzzy dining scene, and cafes, shops, and local makers abound. Is there anything you'd change? The furniture and decor in my own home, after staying here. Any other hotel features worth noting?Tucked in the back of the building, there’s a secluded little garden, with a pebbled ground, beautifully landscaped with lush, native perennial plants. Bring out a morning cup of coffee or an afternoon beer, and revel in the quiet little oasis in the middle of a bustling neighborhood. Bottom line: Worth it? Why? If you’re looking for a morning breakfast buffet or nightly turndown service, move along. But the invisible service hotel is perfect for visitors who really want to get a feel for Philadelphia via one of its most vibrant neighborhoods. Also, the price is a steal when you consider how much room you get. (Up to 1,000 square feet!) It’s easily the best choice for families, or for a friend group getaway." - Regan Stephens

Lokal Hotel Fishtown (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The Lokal hotels aim to split the difference between boutique hotels and vacation rentals — the design sense of the former, the local flavor of the latter, plus a best-of-both-worlds concept they call “invisible service.” Lokal Fishtown fits perfectly into the eponymous Philadelphia neighborhood, known for its nightlife and youthful appeal; its loft-style apartments look sharp, modernist-inspired but unpretentious, and full of functional comforts, with hotel-style bathrooms and apartment-style kitchens — again, the best of both worlds. One has garden access, another a deep soaking tub, and while you’ve got everything you need to entertain in-house, from a cocktail kit to a selection of delivery apps, you’re also surrounded by some of Philadelphia’s best restaurants and bars." - Tablet Hotels

Stayed at the Fishtown Lokal Hotel and loved everything about it! The team communicated clearly and any questions I had, they responded to almost immediately. Super friendly. We stayed in the Front Jawn Unit 01 Studio and it was SO cute and comfy! The bedding was to die for, and there were so many little touches that made it special - from the finishes and furniture to the cute little cocktail making cart and Chemex coffee set up. There’s tons of natural light but also blackout curtains if you need that. You can hear/feel the train go by above street level, but the place must be well insulated because it was really quiet. The location was PERFECT - almost anything you could need was walkable within minutes. We tried a bunch of different places to eat and drink that were so close. I highly recommend Persimmon’s for coffee and pastry, Joe’s for Philly cheesesteaks, Suraya for an amazing Lebanese fusion type lunch or dinner, and INTL bar has the best miso beer braised mussels I’ve ever had. If I’m ever in the area again I will definitely stay here. I love the concept!

We stayed here for our son's wedding and it was fabulous! Our 2 bedroom apartment was vey spacious and modern. It's walkable to all the great shops and restaurants in Fishtown. It's very safe and secure-- there is a gate and a lock code. The staff was friendly and very accommodating. I can't wait to stay here again.

Stayed at Lokal in Fishtown for a couple nights so I could attend a show at Johnny Brenda's. Great location and esthetic! The room was super clean with a lot of attention to detail. Definitely will stay here again when in Philly!

We loved our stay at Lokal Fishtown. The rooms are beautiful, spacious, and well equipped. There were lovely special touches in our room that did not go unnoticed. The location can't be beat, there are many wonderful restaurants and points of interest within walking distance. Check in and communication with hotel staff and management was seamless and very easy. We will definitely be recommending Lokal, and will very likely be back to stay!

Courtney, the off-site hotel manager, could not have been more accommodating and lovely to work with. Courtney even helped us with on-street parking, which is a bit challenging in this area, and, honestly, in all of Philadelphia! The hotel itself is quirky, but in a good way. It is the antithesis of cookie cutter chain hotels. The street door could be a door to a speakeasy - you need to look carefully to find the right one! Once inside via a key code, one is greeted by a long walkway that leads to a back garden. Before arriving at the garden, there is an entry door on the left that leads to the rooms, which are on several floors, beginning with the first floor. The rooms are clean, elegant Scandinavian style, with blackout shades and also white shades that let light in. Both can be used together, or just one, depending on the guest's lighting desires. There is a beautiful kitchen with a refrigerator hidden behind wood cabinetry that matches the cabinets. While my partner and I did not use the kitchen during our stay, it is more than accommodating for any guests needing such facilities. The beds are Caspar and the sheets crisp, cool cotton. I had a better sleep there than in my own bed! The bathrooms are sleek, with interesting surfaces. There are some steps up to the upper floors. The rise space from step to step is low enough to ease the challenge of navigating the steps with luggage. The neighborhood reminds me of NY's Soho in the '80s - interesting, and a mix of gritty/gentrifying streets, with up and coming restaurants (what a selection!) There is an elevated train very near the hotel but we were not disturbed. Earplugs could be useful for light sleepers. The later the hour, less trains rumble by. What a unique experience! We were so happy to have chosen Lokal in Fishtown for our Philly stay, and will do so again. Highly recommend!

We had a really nice stay at this boutique hotel in the heart of Fishtown, Philadelphia. The location is very convenient, just a short 3-minute walk to restaurants and bars, with parking available right across the street. The room was industrial modern, clean, spacious, and comfortable, with high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that brought in plenty of natural light. It featured a large open kitchen and living area, a high-end entertainment system, and a large shower. There was also plenty of closet space. The room included useful extras like robes, sleeping masks, ear plugs, and makeup removal towels. There is also a courtyard garden in the back with a table for eating outside. The hosts were easy to reach and helpful. Check-in and check-out were quick, and the instructions were clear. We had a very enjoyable stay and have already bookmarked this place as a top choice for future visits. We highly recommend it.
