Lon Retreat, Point Lonsdale, Victoria, Australia - Hotel Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Set the scene. A long, winding driveway leads to farm fields and a collection of sandstone buildings on the Bellarine Peninsula, outside Melbourne. There’s the rush of the surf. The sense of space. Inside is a wood-burning stove and smooth concrete walls that contrast with timber ceiling panels and hand-made furniture. You’ll spot lights crafted from ostrich eggs, wallpaper inspired by indigenous artists, heirloom vegetables on the plate, and local gin in the honesty bar. What's the story? With more than 200 acres of rural and conservation land, tucked away on a hillside by the ocean, this place—once the orchard—has been in the Gemes’ family for more than 100 years and across six generations. It was always Claire Gemes’ dream to turn it into a home-hotel they could share; and this is exactly what she’s done, spending two years on the project—her father-in-law was the architect and the whole family was involved. What can we expect in our room? The Alto Suite is the pick of the bunch; though all seven rooms are atmospheric—each named after a cloud—with sunset views of the woolly farm land, dunes and ocean. Hot mineral springs are fed directly into your bath. With a private balcony—complete with barbecue, it goes without saying—you can settle in for several days. Windows frame views over the fields and woodland. How about the food and drink? There’s no restaurant yet—though one is in the pipeline—so breakfast baskets are left in each suite (banana bread, yogurt, granola), and you can order in dinner-style platters (simply cooked vegetables from the garden, cheeses, wines and beers) in the evening if you don't feel like venturing out. Anything to say about the service? Vivacious and passionate, Claire greets guests like old-time friends, warmly welcoming everyone and happily sharing local recommendations. Check-in is casual, efficient and friendly (and if you're lucky, involves one of Claire's mother's freshly baked muffins), setting the tone for the days ahead. Who comes here? Overworked urbanites in jeans and loose linen looking to slow down and recharge. How does it fit into the region? Five minutes’ drive from Point Lonsdale, it overlooks farmland and ocean, with Lake Victoria not far away. The Bellarine peninsula is, like the Mornington peninsula across the bay, making a name for itself as a foodie escape for weekending Melburnians—head to Merne at Lighthouse or Igni diner to tap into local menus. Anything else we should know? The private walkway down to the beach is great for early evening walks up to the lighthouse. And there’s a spa, tapping into the natural waters with jet massages, mineral soaks and body scrubs. Children are not allowed; this is an adults-only affair. And anything you'd change? An on-site restaurant will elevate the food experience a whole lot further. Views away from the sea overlook a newish housing development, so best not to look. Is it worth it—and why? Lon Retreat is an incredibly warm, welcoming escape surrounded by nature—and a quick and easy drive from Melbourne." - Georgia Hopkins

The Best New Hotels in the World: 2019 Hot List

"The hook of this place is how it lets us—forces us, really—to stop. Owner Claire Gemes has thoughtfully put together a relaxed retreat on the property she and her family have lived on for more than a century: 200 lush acres, hidden away on a hill by the ocean on the Bellarine Peninsula near Melbourne. Each of the seven rooms is filled with warm, earthy interiors inspired by the surrounding landscape: moody seas and rolling dark greens. Lon is a place to do everything, including rambling without a map, or nothing at all. Massages at the simple spa are very good; a soak in the mineral pool is even better. The honesty bar and Makers and Growers pantry are full of regional beers, wines, and ciders, while the furniture and art, including the over-head beach photography by Gemes’s brother-in-law, are homespun too. Breakfast baskets are filled with banana bread and granola to graze on in bed or on the balcony while taking in the views in every direction. All the talk in recent years might have been about the Mornington Peninsula, but Lon makes a compelling case for the lo-fi charms of lesser-known Bellarine. FLASH POINT The mineral-rich water used in the spa treatments is sourced from a natural rock pool on the estate. +61 3-5258-2990; lonretreat.com.au. Doubles from about $256." - CNT Editors

Absolutely magical – my sanctuary! This was my fifth visit to LON, and once again, it was pure perfection. If I could live there, I would! I make it a point to go at least twice a year for a full mind-body reset, and it’s worth every single dollar. LON is hands down one of the most calming, natural, and breathtaking day spas I’ve ever experienced. Trust me—splurge a little and treat yourself. You won’t regret it!

Honestly the best massage I’ve ever received, this place was heavenly from start to finish. Upon entering, the space is so beautiful and serene. I was booked in for a 90min just breathe massage and my therapist was a lovely lady named Jo. She was so intuitive and her massage techniques were perfect. I asked for firm pressure and a focus on neck/shoulders, Jo relieved all my tension and didn’t rush at all. I’ve been to many many 5 star spas across Australia and all over the world but I can confidently say that this was the best massage. Every part of my body felt pampered, even my hands and feet were properly massaged and moisturiser was applied. There were hot towels and hot stones plus Jo even got a heat pack for my sore stomach. Just an absolutely incredible and thoughtful service. I can’t wait to come back!

I have just come home after having a treatment including a soak, steam, facial and massage and I have to say the entire experience was next level with many nice finishing touches such as herbal tea and chocolate slice by the pool, the setting, gowns and very comfortable facilities. My therapist Bernadette was amazing and it’s easy to see she is an advanced therapist and an expert at what she does, I came away feeling on cloud 9. Going to Lon Spa for a treatment is something really special.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Lon Retreat, and from the moment I checked in to the moment I checked out, the experience was nothing short of exceptional. The team was kind, attentive, and truly welcoming, making me feel right at home. The suites were a haven of tranquility—calming, relaxing, and beautifully designed. Every detail had been thoughtfully curated, from the quality linen, bedding, and towels to the soothing decor. It was clear that the team had put immense care into creating a luxurious and comfortable space. Having private access to the beach and the opportunity to explore the scenic walks around the property was a highlight. As a woman traveling alone, I felt completely safe and secure, which made my stay even more enjoyable. The meals provided were simply next level—fresh, delicious, and nourishing wholefoods, all served in the comfort of my suite. It was a welcomed escape, allowing me to truly unwind without having to think about a single thing for a few days. A special thank you to the incredible team at the spa. Their skills, kindness, and calming nature left me speechless. The experience was transformative, making all the difference in my stay. Lon Retreat is an absolute must-visit. I’m already looking forward to planning my next trip! Sarah xx

We had a beautiful mid week stay at the Lon! The staff were so warm and friendly and we immediately felt relaxed. We headed to the hot mineral pool and then had a relaxing massage tailored to both of our needs. The rooms were clean, fresh and the bed was so comfortable. We walked along the beach and ate at Noble Rot in Point Londsdale. It was delicious! In the morning we walked along the farm track and beach. It was so peaceful! Our breakfast was in the fridge and just what we needed. We loved the local produce too! The homemade ceramics are divine! thanks team Lon!
