Is there anything that brings you back in time? that makes you feel like a kid again? For me it's the Snoopy snow cone machine that looks like a dog house. You put the ice cubes in the top and it makes little shaved ice cups at the bottom, add a flavored syrup and you're back to age 6.
This past weekend, I watched this same thing happen to my father. I watched a 69 year old man turn into a small child as he took a ride on an authentic B-17 Bomber. I purchased him a ride ($425) on a B-17; he was one of 7 passengers on the 25 minutes flight above Galveston. The ride was as he put it "a once in a lifetime event". He was truly like a kid who sees Santa for the first time or does that first solo no training wheels ride on their bike. If only we could all find things like this to make us so happy.
The Lone Star Flight Museum is a located next to Schlitterbahn, Moody Gardens, and the Galveston Airport (yes! they have an airport). The museum houses many old planes, some from WWII, some older and some newer. The museum has two hangers (one is still under repairs from Hurricane Ike). When you first walk in, you enter a beautiful new gift store full of models, puzzles, mugs, books, t-shirts, and other items that are all plane themed. We had to drag my father away from the 'toys' to get the museum. The whole place has been redone after Hurricane Ike. Next, you enter the museum which is a huge airplane hanger. Inside you'll find classic fighter planes, passenger planes, and the occasional old land vehicle (I saw at least one '57 Chevy Truck). Some of the planes are owned by the museum and others are privately owned and on display. Many of the planes still fly!
So, back to flying in one... there are three different planes you can buy a flight in. There is the B-17 Bomber ($425), the B-25 bomber ($375), and the T-6 ($290). There is another one listed on their website, but when I was there this weekend, these were the only three that were available to fly in or reserve. With all the flights, you get there an hour early for check in and get to walk around the plane. Then you get in and they show you around the plane. There are a variety of places to sit inside including the nose cone (it's clear and a seriously amazing place to sit for take off and landing), the body, the copilot seat, and the tail. There are only 7 passenger per ride, so there is a ton of room in there! Once in the air, you can unbuckle and walk around. There are some tight squeezes inside!
The pilots who fly these planes are very knowledgeable and can answer many questions. The people who work at the museum really do it because they love it and have a great interest in aviation.
If you have a family member who loves old planes, this is the perfect and unique place to bring them. If you aren't interested in flying in the planes, you can still watch them take off and land one Saturday a month.
When in Galveston, get away from the beach, sun, and drinks and head over the museum for a little taste of history.
