On the Grid : The Long and Short

"Sometimes sticking to the basics is the best policy. Long and short does one thing and does it well – make coffee. Melbourne coffee shops set the bar extremely high, so there’s no room for scrubs, and the Long and Short passes all tests with flying colours. The owner, Scrodge, is always down for a chat and seems to know everything worth knowing about the goings on of Brunswick, so if you’re looking for a point in the right direction, head down, grab a coffee and say hi. There's a small selection of tasty snacks as well." - Smith & Thomas

I ordered a long coffee and it was amazing! ☕ The café also offered a variety of pastries that looked really nice (I didn’t try them this time). The staff were kind and friendly, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The location upstairs at Collins Square makes it a great spot to relax and enjoy a break. Definitely recommend!

I was a regular customer until today. I ordered a mocha with a croissant, but the barista made a mistake and served it in another customer’s reusable cup. When she realized her mistake, she simply poured the mocha into a new cup in front of us with less content and no chocolate powder. I honestly didn’t want to drink it, as I had no idea whether the other person’s cup was clean. I told her that what she did was wrong, but she ignored me and said, “Just take it”again, completely unprofessional. I ended up throwing it away. Instead of having an argument, which I didn’t have time for, I prefer to leave it as a review. I will never come back. This is not about the money; it’s about professionalism. The mistake was not mine, nor the other customer’s.

Coffee is great, no issues with the baristas but the last 3 times I've come in for coffee and a croissant I'm left standing around for 5 minutes after my coffee is ready before my food is even started because friendly chats are more important to the staff member. The delay was so long this morning that my croissant was toasted for about 60 seconds which resulted in a cold toasted croissant. I usually give a few chances but I will probably just go to one of the many other options in the building from now on.

Food is fine, service can be very hit or miss, and atmosphere is cruisy and relaxed. The coffee, until today, was standard. Nothing to ever write about. Until. Today. The flat white was superb. The crema on top was ever so slightly nutty and burnt and melded beautifully with the right amount of milk. Best coffee I've had in Melbourne. Old mate who made it deserves an award. It must also be said that as a Coeliac, I can eat a few items from the menu. On the odd occassion the wait staff stuff up the order and it comes with a slice of personal poison, the fantastic chefs ALWAYS rectify the meal for me. Never been an issue. Admittedly, the situation should never get that far, but when it does, the chef's handle it with grace and kindness. But the coffee...🥰

The worst coffee again. I have stopped having here at first place as the coffee was very bad. And again thought will give it a chance and again the same worst experience of burning myself with extra hot coffee whereas I asked for a warm one. Not sure it's the same when busy and when not.

Consistently good coffee. As noted in many reviews here, can wait a bit for coffee. So come before 9am if you don't want to wait. Tried cronuts and some of their cakes and they are quite good, not to mention very pretty.

Really good food, we had barramundi and Smashed avo. Everything tasted great, the fries were very crisp. Nice coffee. Above all, very friendly staff

Great place to eat on a work lunch break. The food was great which was complimented by the friendly staff. Did not have to wait too long for food to be served either.

Yelp
New found place as I went out lunch for colleague birthday. Love their atmosphere, food was pre-order so it is pretty quick. Love the scramble eggs on toast with mushroom. The mushrooms is definitely better value than in St Brew.

Yelp
What a horrid place. Went here for a work coffee. Service was slow Asked for an extra hot skim cap. Got a super sweet non hot not skim cap Told the waitress She gave me the same cup back with added chocolate powder (could tell it was the same coffee as my lipstick mark was still on the cup) Still tasted like a latte Tried to flag the waitress she ignored me 45 minutes later, said can I get a takeaway cup so I can heat coffee myself. She didn't apologize. Poured it into take away cup and gave me the coffee. Coffee cost 4.80. insane.

Yelp
There's no lack of options for coffee at Collins square, however this is the best in my opinion. The coffee is consistent and the team do a great job of remembering your name and coffee order once you've been a few times. If you like a treat with your coffee there's plenty of sweet or savory items to choose from in the morning.

Yelp
This place makes excellent coffee and heavenly desserts. Only downside is their popularity means takeaway service is very slow. Not really their fault, but do allow about 15 minutes. Plenty of time to go ogle the beautiful cakes behind the glass!

Yelp
Ah-mazing coffee! Such a great way to start your day off, so, if your nearby check it out.
