I really enjoyed this, my second visit, to Longhorn Cattle Company. They are located on the south side of I 69-E just east of County Road 509 (AKA S. Helen Moore Road, and AKA Paseo Real Rd). As you're driving up, the restaurant is not visible until you're almost in front of it, so keep that in mind if you're trying to find it for the first time!
As you get out of your car you are welcomed by the tantalizing smokey aroma of BBQ... and if you weren't sure you were hungry before, you suddenly will be!
I arrived a little earlier than I had expected, my friends had not yet arrived, so I walked around back to the ranch area where you can see a real Longhorn steer, donkeys and a horse. If my kids were still small they would have been thrilled to see the animals. The grounds are very well maintained and really add a lot to the experience.
I was greeted when I walked in the front door. The hosts do a great job with that, and quickly found a table for me and my friends. There are two dining rooms as well as a screened in patio. We went to "the back 40", the back dining room.
Drinks are served in small pitchers, (32 oz?), so I never needed a refill of my freshly brewed iced tea. Along with drinks everyone was served a mug full of flavorful beans (they do have some black pepper), which they will keep bringing if you ask! I decided to pace myself because I really wanted to enjoy the BBQ. Since I was having a difficult time deciding between brisket, baby back ribs, smoked turkey, chicken, sausage I chose a three meat plate. It came with potato salad, slaw, a fresh Texas sized slice of bread, pickles, onions, and jalapeno.
I not only enjoyed the meats, I thought the potato salad was excellent, and the slaw was pretty good too!
They tell you to save some room for dessert, so I asked for a to-go container for what I didn't finish and ordered some banana pudding. Others at my table got some cheesecake (which looked really good!). The banana pudding was the best I've had at a restaurant. I could tell it was made recently because the vanilla wafers still had some crunch which I appreciate!
Our food was delicious, the seating was comfortable, the ambience was a little loud but great. The service was excellent. Prices are reasonable. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Though I live an hour away, it was definitely worth the drive. I will return!
