2024 Best Cities for Bakeries in the United States

"We called it a couple of years ago: Indianapolis has become a major force on the national culinary scene, partly thanks to its strong baking tradition, which continues to flourish. From well-established local favorites like Long's Bakery, which for almost 70 years has served some of the best doughnuts in the country, to Leviathan Bakehouse, which has made news with its house-made bread (try the porridge sourdough pan loaf), there's always something exciting proofing in Indy." - Dobrina Zhekova

Google
CASH ONLY! Both locations in town serve up the BEST yeast donuts I've ever had. The donut holes are by far our favorite, with the cinnamon fry in second. I do like this location more since it has a nice parking lot and more space in general.

Kendra Wise

Google
The Internet did not lie they are the best Indianapolis donuts! Warm glazed and almost too soft they just melt in your mouth. Sweet employees and top not h service and very affordable.

Jonathan Tucker

Google
Delicious donuts at a decent price. I like this location better than the other one, as it is much less hectic and has a parking lot.

Google
I recently stopped in to get my Mom a Birthday Treat. The ladies who helped me were both patient, kind, and extremely helpful. I loved that the store was decorated for celebrating 70yrs of business. Happy Birthday Long's Bakery. Here's to another 70yrs and beyond! Thank you for always making my family smile!

Google
This place is awesome! Today, me and my brother went here for the first time since we were kids, and this place delivered above and beyond! I ordered 2 donuts and 2 cookies, and damn! I don't know what the secret recipe is here, but this place made a revisit over a decade in the making worth it. I'll definitely be headed back sometime!

Google
I know I had no buisness walking in these doors but one can't pass by the area without stopping by Longs! Staff was friendly as usual and the pastries were good enough to ruin any diet! Always a winner! And I can blame my friend for making me stop by and go in.

Google
So- this may not be well received but- I would not go back . The ppl were super, so it’s not a bad experience at all- and I was even given a free donut for my first time visiting. It was good, just not so good that I won’t find one like it elsewhere. The brownies were very dry- and probably more personal preference, but I didn’t love the cream inside of the long John- (it was a bit mushy on bottom) I was told by many to go to Longs. It just wasn’t for me.

Dan Jackson

Google
I’ve been going there for 21 years, and every single time they have not disappointed. They have a very wide variety of donuts and baked goods and their service is impeccable. Everything is delicious there even when sitting in the back of our pantry for 4 days. But the stars of the show are the glazed donuts. They were straight out the grease, warm, gooey and crispy. They tasted and felt like the clouds straight out of heaven. Everyone there is always incredibly kind. One of my favorite things besides the donuts is their short wait times. It takes longer to eat their donuts than it does to wait. If you are even remotely close to Longs, go there. You will not regret it.

Yelp
Working night shift has brought me a wonderful work family that enjoys spoiling one another often. I decided that Friday night was my turn to spoil us. After some thoughtful research into who would still have fresh pastries at 5pm, Long's became the clear choice. There were no dissapointments in our visit to Long's. Easy parking, clean throughout, with friendly service at a very low CASH price. 12 donuts and 2 pastries for $13... It doesn't get any better than that. Recommending you try an Apple Fry! 08-30-2024

Yelp
Best doughnuts super coffee cakes MUST USE CASH doesn't take any cards. Coffee and milk

Yelp
Good selection of donuts, strudels, and other pastries with friendly service. It's a good spot for munchies outside of downtown Indianapolis

Tami V.

Yelp
Well established bakery on the Southside if Indy. If it's a donut, they've got it! We take a couple dozen over to Grandmas every once in a while, and all at her place love them. My personal favorite is the chocolate frosted with crème inside. So good. (Do know it's a cash only place)
google avatar

Yelp
Highly recommend Long's Bakery for all your donuts or pastry needs! This is an old-school bakery, with friendly service. I personally always get a glazed twist and a cream filled long John, but they have a wide selection of items each morning.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
This was my first time here and it was entirely based on Yelp recommendations for one of the best donuts around. OMG thank goodness I listen to Yelp! I told the lady helping me it was my first time there and she gave me a "token of their appreciation" a fresh, still hot, yeast donut which she said is the donut they are known for. Well I called it a little piece of heaven! I went in for one donut and left with a dozen. Exceptional customer service. Great tasting donuts.

Yelp
My family loves to purchase donuts from local bakeries to enjoy every Saturday morning. The next one on the list was Longs. I will admit, it's been a while since I've been there so I did sort of forget about the cash only policy. There is a bank close by so I was able to withdraw some cash. The employees were super friendly and one even went to the back to try to find a donut for me with "just a bit more icing." Oh my goodness. Every single donut or pastry we chose was so delicious. There were twists and gators and sprinkles and cinnamon and sugar and peanut and chocolate and jelly filled and every single bite kept you wanting more. The cost is per donut and I was nervous to hear the final price after I chose twelve unique donuts. Less than $17 for what I chose. That's amazing. Seriously. So with a little pep in my step, I left the bakery excited for Saturday morning. And now, I look forward to the next time we visit. Yes, parking is scarce but this building has been around forever and I imagine they had no idea how popular their bakery would be when they opened it many years ago.

Yelp
The best donuts and maple alligators in the world are here. The staff are so sweet and helpful and efficient. This is a must in the area. The large alligator is as large as a pizza! The line moves quickly, don't forget this is a cash only place!
google avatar

Ashley P.

Yelp
I've had these 35 yrs. Best doughnuts on earth. Just remember CASH ONLY. They have an amazing staff even with long line they move efficiently as well as have big hearts.
google avatar

Brandon D.

Yelp
Holy Moly these are the best donuts I've ever had. I got the donut holes, which were stuck together and had to be pulled apart (i liked this). They were intentionally made like that and dusted with cinnamon and glaze. I also got a cake donut that had cinnamon and glaze on it as well. Traditional cake donuts are dry. This cake donut was so moist and absolutely delicious. If you are within an hour of this place, it's worth the drive. They only take cash, so prepare for that but damn it's good.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Always fabulous products and friendly dedicated staff. Good idea to call ahead to avoid typically long lines

Yelp
Great cashiers and service personnel are always quick to fill orders Great donuts and pastries cookies cash only go early

Yelp
This O.G. Donut shop has been doing it right since 1951. The donuts are light as a feather and cooked to perfection. The cinnamon twist has a perfect coating that adds a slight crunch before the doughy release. In a world full of bad heavy donuts, longs stands a a beacon of hope in the Midwest!
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Very nice service just wish would take debit card payments not everyone keeps cash on them, but love, love the donuts

Yelp
I lived in Indianapolis for 6 years, use to hear people talk about Longs but never tried them. We were home for the holiday so I decided to give them a try to see if they could stand up to places we have here in vegas and let me tell you I was blown away! Let me start with customer service. They were warm and friendly and greeted us as we walked in the door with a smile. She asked if we had been to longs before and we told her we had not. She said one moment came back and handed us both a glazed donut and stated everyone gets one on their first visit. She explained the donuts and answered any questions we had about the donuts. The donuts. First i have never tasted a glazed donut like this before it was light and airy and just melts in your mouth. All the other donuts didn't disappint as well. If i could i would have brought back the whole donut shop back to vegas!

Victoria G.

Yelp
The jelly rolls are the best. Second place would be the apple fritters. Third place the yeast rolls. Runner up...Neapolitan! All are amazingly delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Pastry is always wonderful. Service is prompt and courteous. My favorite place to go pastry. Clean and friendly people

Yelp
This review is ONLY for those that are brand new to Indianapolis. If you have been here at least for a year, you already know this amazing bakery. You will have your favorites and have created your habits of when you visit. And you also know there is absolutely no comparison to their tasty treats. Ok, you newbie's; First and foremost Long's is CASH ONLY!!!!! It has always been that way and the demand for their product does not require them to change that policy. For all the young folks out there, if you're heading here, put at least a $20 bill in your wallet or purse. There prices are very reasonable, but you will not be able to control yourself with all the amazing pastries to choose from in the cases. Lordy, it's hard, but you'll find your favorites. But, you will find hard to stop choosing items. Our favorites our the fried apple and cinnamon fritters and the brownies, especially the peanut butter brownies. There are two locations. One located on Southport Rd in downtown Southport. The other is right off 16th Street, near downtown. Enjoy and loosing your belts a notch or two!!

Yelp
We're from out of town and saw this bakery featured on the best donuts in IN. Very easy to find and there is a decent size parking lot. The line was short when we showed up and Brandie served us where she gave each of us a glazed yeast donut since it's our first time visiting. Very nice gesture! Prices are extremely affordable and we got 5 donuts. Cash only.
google avatar

Clint C.

Yelp
The donut goat. Other donuts are good, don't get me wrong, but there has to be one. A one ring of flour, sugar and glaze, to rule them all.
google avatar

George R.

Yelp
An Indianapolis institution. Here are some thoughts on it... First things first, this place is CASH ONLY! Folks need to know that because while some of us carry cash, many folks nowadays do not. Second, the cream filleds are the unsung heroes here. The maples are my favorite, but the chocolates may be a close second. Third, the eclairs. Come early and buy one if you have never had an eclair before. It will change your life. They're fresh as can be, and you really want to eat them instead of refrigerating them for later. Fourth, you can call ahead for large orders. When I bring these to school, I like to call the day beforehand in the morning or afternoon. I would especially recommend doing this for others over two or three dozen.
google avatar

Yelp
Yum!! Longs bakery has excellent donuts. Arrived around 9:30 on a Saturday morning and happily discovered that they were still going strong with hundreds of donuts left. I got in line and got my half dozen. I tried the yeast donuts, cinnamon frys, and cream filled long johns. The long johns were my favorite but really everything was good! Just an fyi there is not seating onsite.
google avatar

Wendy R.

Yelp
Wow I've never had donuts that taste homemade. The first one I had was a maple bar as u can see in the picture couldn't resist. I've never had a maple bar that was creme filled it was so good. Donuts don't feel greasy like others that feel like they leave a greasy film in your mouth these are perfect. I would definitely go here for now on when we want donuts.
google avatar

Yelp
Long's has been making the best donuts in Indiana since 1955. They're a staple in Indianapolis and Southport. My dad used to get a box of Long's almost weekly for his employees for decades. I live in California, but I make a point to grab donuts at one of the two Long's locations each visit! These are no frills donuts. I've never been a fan of overly decorated, super decadent, sickeningly sweet Instagrammable donuts. If that is what you're looking for, you won't find them at Long's. The staff greet you with friendliness and efficiency. I was even complimented on my shirt today. I'm a sucker for a compliment on my eccentric style. Their thin yet fluffy, delicately sweet glazed donuts are so delicious. It's the only donut I've ever eaten more than one of (ok, today I had two ) where I haven't felt like I was gonna explode or have a cavity after. Eating a Long's glazed donut is pure pleasure and joy combined into one slightly off kilter ring. A must for every Hoosier and visitor to Indy.
google avatar

Angela J.

Yelp
I doubt I can say anything that others haven't. Long's donuts are a Hoosier staple, and you understand why the first time your lips touch one of their sweets. I stop in weekly, with my granddaughters, and always receive excellent, friendly service. The apple cinnamon fries are my favorite. But if I'm looking to really satisfy my sweet tooth, the Bravarian Cream and jelly donuts are *chef's kiss*

Deborah J.

Yelp
Best baked goods in the Indy area -however- they are not in Greenwood, they are in Southport.
google avatar

Destiny H.

Yelp
If you are ever in Indiana, you must! Get! A! Longs! Donut!! Is Indiana known for Longs? I feel like we are. My favorite is always the cake donut. They are always so moist, chewy and delicious. My favorite flavors are the applesauce, and pumpkin when they're in season, and the blueberry cake donut! Of course, their staple yeast is also fantastic.
google avatar

Abby M.

Yelp
If you're from the Indianapolis area, you know nothing is better than a large white box of Long's donuts. My favorites are the long John and blueberry! The glazed donut holes are perfectly fluffy and a great addition to any order. Be prepared to wait in a line on busy days and to pay cash!
google avatar

Giovanni F.

Yelp
Really great donuts! A south side staple for baked sweets. Nice flavors for sure. Stopped in for some maple glazed and cinnamon sugar cake donuts for my homies. They all loved the donuts as they weren't too sweet and they could taste the freshness of them. Will pick up some more donuts! Only downside is they are cash only which, why??? Anyhow, just remember to bring cash or you will be disappointed.
google avatar

Bobby D.

Yelp
There is nothing like the taste of Long's Bakery's donuts, brownies, and other bakery items. The biggest problem is wanting to. It more than you can eat. LOL. To make things even more enjoyable has been the staff. I have never met anyone more friendly and helpful. They have all kinds of patience as they wait on me to make up my mind to place my order.
google avatar

Claire R.

Yelp
Best bakery in town! You won't find better donuts anywhere else and the people are always so kind! Such a nice bakery.
google avatar

Shauntae A.

Yelp
I'm so sad and disgusted to write this review. I came in do excited for some fantastic delicious donuts that melt in your mouth and leave wanting more,as I stood patiently in line making my selection in line I seen something in the case. Not one but two somethings running about. I thought my eyes were playing yr is on me til my eyes focused a seen two roaches running around the case on to donuts . I stood there wondering if I should yell out and decided to wait when she came over I leaned across the glass and told her and pointed out where they ran off to hiding in the corners of the case. She informed the manner who didn't apologize she got a cart and loaded the donuts on there. Why pit them on the cart and not in the trash can? Because I knew when I left she would put them back out to be sold. I left not having an appetite after seeing this. If you go and want extra protein this is your place I guess. I'm sorry I won't be back until they are cleared by the health department.

David B.

Yelp
Longs is our "Go-To" doughnut and cookie shop. The quality and taste is consistent every time and the old school feel (Cash Only) is refreshing!
google avatar

Keigo T.

Yelp
$3 for donuts and food is stale disgusting never going back there again they used to be good what happened
google avatar

Linda L.

Yelp
If you like yeast donuts this is the place to get them. They are the melt in your mouth old school sweet goodness. Bring cash, and if it's a normal day prepare to wait in line. I came on a snowy Thursday morning and it was the first time I've ever gone in without a big line, but they had a variety of cookies, donuts, strudels, danishes. My sister and nieces were appreciative of the sweet treats.
google avatar

Madison C.

Yelp
Long's Bakery is Southside's holy grail! Literally the best donuts ever and the red velvet cupcakes are delicious. If you are coming from out of town you will want to note they only accept cash and if it's the weekend prepare to wait in line. Very common to see the line out the door. It is worth the wait and all the hype. Cheers!
google avatar

Amy W.

Yelp
Long's is a must. Even after a long hiatus, I can always tell when I'm eating Long's, because I always want to eat a second one! There's nothing like the melt-in-your-mouth sweet goodness of a Long's yeast glazed. Visited after a long absence and it was exactly how I remembered, which is good, because I'd hyped it up to a friend who had never been to Indy and was visiting with me. The counter staff was great filling our order and when they found out my friend was a newbie, they brought him a fresh, warm yeast glazed on the house. Bring cash and don't worry if there's a line. They're efficient and friendly and any wait is well worth it.
google avatar

Briana C.

Yelp
Longs has the best donuts ! I'm so happy there is a location on the south side! The service is always quick and the employees are super sweet!
google avatar

Staci W.

Yelp
I'm shocked I've never reviewed Long's! This bakery is a staple in Indianapolis- pretty sure most residents have tried it at least once. At a previous job when people found out I lived close to the one on Southport they started a donation pool so I could bring it regularly! The yeast is the most popular which melts in your mouth. I love the cake donuts they have as well.
google avatar

Jayden D.

Yelp
If you want some of the most affordable but Dr lipid pastries around the area, Long's has got to be on your list to try. The service is fast, and staff members are always pleasurable. Ambiance is definitely old-schooled but super inviting. Love grabbing donuts here in the mornings!
google avatar

Sean H.

Yelp
The staff is the opposite of friendly. There always seems to be a wait and the staff is in no hurry to fill orders. The donuts are ok not sure what the hypes about. Also they ONLY take CASH?!? Hrmm maybe the IRS needs to sit outside counting donut sales :)
google avatar

Nic J.

Yelp
Long's is at the pinnacle of the art of donuts. Personally, I enjoy a standard glazed yeast donut, and no one does it better. Get there early, or you'll be waiting in line. The only downside is that I've eaten way more donuts than I should have this morning.
google avatar

Dan O.

Yelp
Great bakery Delicious doughnuts and pastries Good prices but cash only Best in Indy

John C.

Yelp
Homemade goodness for years and years. I love the smell when you arrive and get out of the car. You can smell you are in for a great time.
google avatar

Ashleigh G.

Yelp
A long standing local bakery known and loved by many! The actual storefront is quite small and cute as they require most of the space for the actual baking process. If you haven't tried longs get, I recommend going here! Keep in mind they are cash only every time I have gone and make sure to get there early! It's always a special treat getting to go pick out donuts with my son and take them home for breakfast or bring them to teachers before school.

Yelp
If I could give no stars or negative stars I would. I am super disappointed in the staff at this location. My boyfriend, who is a black man, went in asking to place our order at the counter. The female staff immediately was giving rude looks towards him, as he began to tell and point to the the lady his order she began to correct him loudly on the names of the donuts and then turning around to look at the other staff members and laugh at him for not knowing the "proper" names of donuts. He would say the glazed twisted long donuts and she would loudly go "actually they are ..." and turn to laugh with her coworkers. For one portion of our order the lady had to retrieve the donuts from the back of the store area and when she returned she glanced at her coworkers and again began laughing as if some inside joke about the donuts or if the donuts were in some way "messed with" this made me feel extremely uncomfortable in even eating the donuts at this location. My boyfriend completed the order by asked for 2 things of white milk the lady then goes on to slowly pronounce all the different milk options and tell him the expiration dates on them. Never in my life have I had them read me the expiration date to me. Feels completely targeted and as if the staff intended to embarrass him. He left feeling uncomfortable and quite frankly like he'd been racially targeted. Plenty of customers were ahead and behind him that were not treated that way. I'm extremely disappointed and disgusted at the staff working. Do better.
google avatar

Brittany S.

Yelp
Just as you'd expect, this southside iteration of Long's Bakery comes with the same no-frills, cash only, small town vibes and hot, fresh and fluffy glazed yeast donuts. Consistency is key, right? If you're not from Indy, go out of your way to either of the Long's locations and you'll be in for a treat. The best in Indy. In addition to their famous glazed yeast donuts, you'll also find cake donuts, cakes, a line up of brownies (including walnut and peanut butter), neopolitan slices, cookies and so on. All at very reasonable prices. (Again, cash only, my friend). The staff at this location was very sweet and laid back. They made the process fun despite it being a bustling Sunday afternoon of business. Yes, even at 1PM on a Sunday, there's a line. If you're in a pinch on the cash part, there's a Chase ATM up the street - it's worth the extra effort.
google avatar

Joan L.

Yelp
Wow, what has happened to Long's? I've been a long time fan and, to be honest, had been going to Pana Donuts because it's closer to home, less expensive, maybe a little less sweet and they accept credit cards. But, today I was passing by and couldn't resist the thought of a fine Ling's Bakery chocolate-glazed yeast donut. Surprised at how few people were there but lucky for me! Got a dozen assorted, brought them home and wondering why they think these meet any quality standard? My yeast donuts tasted day old and dry and what's with the weird shape. Come on, Ling's! You can do better! For $14 do better!
google avatar

Mark R.

Yelp
Best eclair I've ever tasted without question. The apple strudel was very good. They really take pride in their products here.
