The Everglades Is One of America's Most Overlooked National Parks—Why You Should Visit

"This 25-mile gravel backcountry loop delivers solitude and close-up swamp scenery—eerie flooded woods with trees festooned by air plants and the occasional ghost orchid, dark pools where alligator eyes break the surface, and long stretches driven 'without seeing another soul.' The route is lined with cypress forests and offers sightings of egrets, barred owls and other water-woodland species, providing an unhurried, immersive scenic drive." - Stanley Stewart Stanley Stewart Stanley Stewart is a multi-award-winning travel writer and author of three acclaimed books. Big Cypress Loop Road is a fantastic 15-mile drive through the Everglades for the Nature Lover. I recommend this road all year round but especially during and after the rainy season when the alligators fill the roadside and the canal running along the roadside. It will be an unforgettable view of Florida's apex predator and many other wildlife.

Just wow, all swamp creatures direct in front of you. Drove in the morning and took so many nice pictures. Beware the Mosquitos are hungry but not as bad as I thought. Watch out for Alligators since they are everywhere when you step out of your car. The unpaved road conditions vary from good to moderate to very bumpy.

Wow. I can say with certainty, I’ve never had that much fun on a road. This was the highlight of our Everglades trip. So many gators and it was like a game to find them. Lots of birds and cool flora. If you are only going to g to drive it one way, go west to east and drive slowly. You will, whatever your group consists of, will have a blast.

Quite a painful drive overall. At start about 15-20 miles of pot holes on a unmade track until there is none, but estimated it is 40 miles of which 20 miles you can on my do 10mph due to road surface and so whole drive took 2 hours. Yes it is scenic and you feel your deep in the swamp that is the Everglades. Nice plants and the odd bird but the drive for me wasn’t worth it, as after a while it’s all the same anyway. My rental was absolutely filthy on the outside by the end of it. Also dunno if it was because my car was white, but there was no chance opening door or window as literally hundreds of bugs surround the car while driving literally hornets and all sorts banging against window throughout. Highlight was at end seeing an old gas station & old car knowing normal road surface for last 7 miles was very welcoming.

Great drive to see wildlife. Aligators, Ibises, vultures. Be well prepared for bugs. 2-3 westernmost miles of dirt road are full of potholes and driving is slow. Rest of the road in good condition

Very scenic drive, lots of wildlife! Highly recommend bug spray or long sleeves, long pants and hat with a bug screen if you are out of your car walking around. Great scenery of what Florida was like before it was settled, just raw and wild!

This is a google marker for the drive along the Everglades back roads. There is nothing special at this point. The western part of the loop is on gravel track with LOTS of pot holes. Although drivable in road cars, it is not very comfortable and maximum speed around 5-10 mph for 15miles. There are opportunities to spot alligators and other wildlife along the route as well as some stunning Everglades woodland. There are some trails just off the road. However, in September when I went, stopping for more than a few seconds meant many mosquitoes biting you. If you want to walk the trails, bring mosquitoe repellent. Your car will need a wash afterwards too.

Unbelievable—and totally free! We saw tons of alligators just lounging around, with birds perched calmly in the trees. The loop is pretty long, and it might seem underwhelming at first, but don’t give up—toward the end, the gator sightings really pick up. Totally worth it.
