We stayed for two nights, one night in the Loquat Sanno kura (the duplex room), and the other night in the Loquat’s villa Suguro. ||The concept of Loquat is very different from other onsen hotels. The hotel main site has only two rooms (or I will say two small houses), a restaurant with its own bakery, a gelato shop , and a mini bar (with two tables only). It’s a historic site so you will be amazed by the old building structure. The interior, however, is fully renovated with modern furniture decorations. Each room has its own outdoor onsen. We stayed in Sanno kura which is a duplex where the living area and bathroom are on the ground floor and the tatami style beds are upstairs. We like the room design and the decor is comfortable. ||Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the staff and directed to our room. Welcome drinks and gelato were served, the staff spoke fluent English and very attentive, everything seemed good until there was a big cockroach running out from the toilet which shocked us all. We got rid of it eventually and the staff brought us a can of pesticide spray just in case. They offered to switch us to the other room, but I thought it was just an odd incident so we declined. Still, play safe, we did spray the pesticide in the living room before we went out to dinner. Dinner was great and it was Italian fine dining, unlike the typical Kaiseki style traditional Japanese meal in most onsen hotels. Later that night, we found a gecko in the shower and another cockroach in the living room. I was so uncomfortable and decided to switch the room the next morning. They offered to upgrade us to the villa this time. The villa is about 10 min drive from the main site. The villa is very spacious for just the two of us. It has a kitchen with a dining area, a living room and two bedrooms. Apart from the outdoor onsen, it also has a steam room which is very relaxing for me as I didn’t sleep well the night before. We were happy about the arrangement, but again, later that night, I was horrified by the invasion of a huge spider about 15 cm long, crawling in the living area. Totally disturbing for me and I could not sleep well that night. We sprayed so much pesticide in the living area that we found the dead bug lying in a corner of the kitchen the next day. ||I understand that this is located in a rural area, but the management could have done a better job in pest control to prevent this from happening. I travelled to some southeast Asian countries where the hotel villas also located in the woods or by the beach where there are lots of insects, but those hotels still manage to keep the residence clean and free of ‘big’ bugs. Never had I encountered any incident like this (in fact, cockroaches can be a serious hygiene issue) and I could not imagine this happened in Japan. The villa is meant to be a great escape from the city and a quiet relaxing place to stay. But with the insects joining us as company…. That’s a big disappointment. ||I do appreciate the staff are helpful and understanding. The breakfast and dinner are also delicious. But with such an expensive price, I think the place needs a better housekeeping and maintenance plus a very intensive pest control service to live up to its expectations.
