Lord Crewe Arms, Blanchland, County Durham - Explore & Book

"Take the comfort of a country-house hotel, mix with the heartiness of a rural pub, deliver with a cool eye for design - and you’ve got the measure of this place. Commanding the centre of tiny Blanchland, a pin-neat estate village (think honeyed-stone cottages and hanging baskets), the Lord Crewe was originally the Abbot’s house of a 12th-century monastery. All thick walls, flagged floors and oversized fireplaces, it’s the sort of place where you take wrong turns and discover another staircase. In the 21 bedrooms, the style is stripped-down but comfortable with lots of exposed stone and plain woods, battered leather and wool throws. Fires and candles burn throughout, enhancing the already atmospheric building. Most guests (including smart shooting parties in season) disappear all day to walk, cycle or explore Hadrian’s Wall, then return to skilfully cooked yet honest food (including spit-roast options at weekends), a good local pint and a blissfully quiet night’s sleep. Highs Ridiculously relaxed, but with a well-honed professionalism Located in a seriously beautiful part of the country; come here to get outdoors Rooms are generous in size, with luxe linens and Noble Isle toiletries A choice of eating areas so you can go smart, casual, cosy or romantic; if you’re staying several nights, each dinner feels different Friendly staff who all live locally and are great sources of advice and tips Lows Although it’s in a small village, few bedrooms have countryside views You'll need a car to get here, and it's a 20-minute drive to shops No mobile signal, not even outside Some bedrooms are a little dingy and feel rather spartan in their décor" - Helen Pickles

We only spent one night here as a family of 4. Room was beautiful, quality furnishings and very comfy beds!! Lovely and quiet. Beautiful building and garden. Cannot recommend enough. The food is pricey, but you get what you pay for. The dining room has a wonderful view. We will definitely be back!

The team made us feel so at home and we were able to completely switch off. The building itself is absolutely stunning, and we managed to enjoy meals in all the different dining areas as well as relaxing with a drink in the bar. You can really tell they go above and beyond, we were even dropped off at Hadrian’s Wall for an explore and booked in for a nature walk around Blanchland too. A 10/10 experience, and we can’t wait to return!

We just loved everything about this hotel. The fabulous location, the glorious building, the gorgeous room, the lovely bar, the friendly and helpful staff, brilliant.|We used the Hotel as a convenient but luxurious base to visit Hadrian's Wall, walk over the moors surrounding Blanchland and visit the nearby Hexham and Corbridge, and it fitted the bill perfectly.|We had a lovely Champion room, which was spacious, with lovely rolltop bath, so good we didn't even use the seperate shower.|Breakfast was great, loads of choice and a good cooked variety with excellent black pudding.|Plenty of parking at the rear of the Hotel and reasonable bar prices, a location where we met some friendly and interesting fellow guests.|Nothing not to love and we plan to return in the future.

Just spent an evening here. What a place, full of history and charm. The staff were all great and really friendly and helpful. I’d highly recommend this place for a day trip out or a night away. The food options were great. Pizza oven in the garden was a sellout and a great touch in the sunshine. They looked pretty immense! The fish finger sandwich I had was a worldie. A much bastardised menu item elsewhere this one at the Lord Crewe was the best I’d had ever. The perfect fish finger sandwich.|Rooms were lovely and cosy and the surroundings were great for a walk out. With the location absolutely stunning. ||Go visit and see for yourself.

Very nice location with lots of walking routes. Pub had a good selection of ales and lagers. Restaurant had a very nice atmosphere and the food and service were superb both for dinner and breakfast. Rooms were nicely done and clean. We did not bring our dogs but it is dog friendly at the Lord Crewe arms. For us , celebrating a 60th birthday, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Definitely value for money. I can highly recommend the whole experience!

Stayed here for one night and will definatly be going back. We were so well looked after, the hotel is very dog friendly they provide a dog bed and a little care package with treats in for your dog. The room and bathroom were gorgeous so luxurious and clean. Lovely touches to the room on arrival which made us feel so welcome. So relaxing, just what we needed on the last night of our trip. Staff were very helpful and welcoming. The food in the restaurant was gorgeous and one of the reasons we want to go back. Thankyou Lord Crewe arms.

Arrived at 1.30 pm on Sunday. Sunday lunch fully booked but place empty from arrival until departure almost an hour later. Asked if any alternative food available, only a portion of chips!! Served with Balsamic vinegar. A beautiful building in a gorgeous village, but frankly, not being able to buy anything to eat apart from chips at such an acclaimed place? Clearly no drive to provide good customer service, this place missed the opportunity to serve hungry customers, who remained hungry!! It would not have been a great effort to provide cold food, sandwiches or similar. Not a great welcome for visitors to Northumberland. This would not happen in the South of England or Yorkshire. We made do with a portion of mediocre chips which were extortionately priced too. ( £18 for 2 portions & 2 halves of lager). Needless to say we will not be returning. I’m just pleased, we didn’t take our German visitors with us that day, I would have been embarrassed at the poor offering. Shame on you Lord Crewe.

Recommended by a friend, we arrived with high hopes. The hotel itself looked stunning—elegant and full of promise. Upon arrival, we were promptly shown to our table and offered the wine menu, which we declined. Unfortunately, no other drinks menu was provided, which felt limiting. After waiting without further attention, we requested to place our food order. We chose a three-course meal. While the presentation was flawless, the mains arrived barely warm, and to our dismay, there was a noticeable black hair on the cabbage. We informed the waitress, who offered a brief apology but failed to follow up or address the issue further. Once we finished eating, we sat with empty plates for quite some time. The service felt slow, inattentive, and disengaged. The building itself is undeniably beautiful, and on arrival it gives the impression of a fine dining experience. However, the service lacks polish and the food quality falls short of expectations. Sadly, based on this experience, I wouldn’t return.
