The Lord Poulett Arms, Hinton St George, Wiltshire - Explore & Book

"Our first impressions of Hinton St George were of style, tradition and serenity. The Lord Poulett Arms, therefore, is perfectly suited to its picturesque Somerset-village setting. When we arrived at the 17thC thatched pub, it was Happy Hour: a log fire was lit and locals were enjoying complimentary bar snacks and craft ales. Everyone, whether a regular or a visiting guest, was being greeted warmly by the smiling staff. This is clearly a hub for the community; we spotted the vicar chatting to the landed gentry, and, as more weekend guests arrived, everyone seemed to mix happily. If you’re looking for a fine example of an English country pub, you’ve come to the right place. For many, the food is the main attraction. Based upon the area’s excellent produce, menus change seasonally and are a perfect balance of hearty pub fare and refined gourmet options, all prepared with finesse. But upstairs 6 stylish bedrooms are a big draw, too. Fashionable touches (Berber rugs, modern art and rolltop baths) marry beautifully with flagstone walls and ancient fireplaces. All-in-all, another resounding triumph from the team behind The Beckford Arms and The Talbot Inn. Highs It’s worth coming for the food alone; stay the night and you'll get an excellent breakfast, too Just 6 stylish but comfortable rooms, with bathrobes and Bramley toiletries Amazing rates Wonderful countryside walks out from the village A sun-trap courtyard gardens with pretty trellises, shady spots and a petanque court Lows Two of the rooms have their bathrooms across the corridor rather then ensuite, but you’re unlikely to bump into anyone on the landing Breakfast finishes at 9:30am It's an old building so noise can carry. You might hear people in neighbouring rooms or in the bar if it is busy Closed Mondays and Tuesdays You'll need a car but arrival is easy, just off the A303, and although parking is on-street, it's a quiet village" - Abi Colgan

We stayed here last night after our wedding and the staff could not have been more welcoming. The manager Jon was particularly friendly and helpful. We stayed with our dog and we had treats and a dog bowl in our room waiting for us which was a lovely touch. The service was fantastic, for example, we asked for pint glasses for our bouquets and they didn't even bat an eyelid. Nothing was too much trouble. We had breakfast the next morning, including dog friendly sausages for our dog. The breakfast was lovely, the poached eggs were absolutely spot on! Overall, 10/10 can't fault it and we will definitely stay here again! Thank you Jon and team!

Stopped here on a long journey for a quick dinner. They took our last minute booking from about an hour away. The service was fantastic, they gave our dog biscuits and a water bowl. The food also did not disappoint. It was lovely and we will definitely come back next time we are in the area!

We stayed for a night and had dinner and breakfast. We were met by Jon, a jolly landlord! The room fine - if you like the bath in the bedroom! Dinner was superb. We didn't try the cooked breakfast but what we had was delicious - there was a fruit salad! Service was great. Car parking is in the road outside the hotel. It was pricey but we enjoyed our stay.

Our extended family of ten spent a weekend at Lord Poulett Arms and occupied all six bedrooms. We had the best, best time. The staff were fabulous on all levels, the main pub dining area and bar are full of character and so welcoming, and our bedrooms perfect. We were all so happy! Also, because we were a relatively large group, we were given the wine cellar dining room all to ourselves, which was very special. The food fabulous and critically, the staff all delightful and professional in all they did for us. We will be back. The whole pub is dog friendly, with special treats and dog shampoo for our beloved hounds! THANK YOU for our glorious weekend.

We had a really lovely stay, everything was top notch! No faults at all (which is genuinely unusual). We stayed 2 nights in a comfortable room with private rolltop bath just across the hall. It was very luxurious, clean and had almost everything we needed. I would say if you're an early or light sleeper maybe bring some earplugs as you can hear the hustle and bustle from the pub downstairs. Breakfast was incredible with no weird or strict rules on what you can have which is reassuring. Dinner was excellent, service was a tad slow but we could tell they were very busy. And the food was definitely on the expensive end so just be warned before you turn up on a whim! Overall I would 100% recommend and stay again at one of their partner pubs to fill up our stamp book. A big thank you to all your lovely staff!

A lovely quaint hotel/pub in a quiet village. Lovely area - staff are super friendly, the food is delicious (the breakfast on offer is insane - both buffet and from the kitchen!) and the rooms are v comfortable with a gorgeous roll top bath. Perfect for a quiet getaway.

We visited the beautiful village of Hinton St. George and have to say we walked past this pub as i thought we would find another pub in Dinnington...........how wrong we were! luckily we walked past again and I managed to take a peek at the garden as it was a sunny day, it was enough to convince me it was worth a visit......that was just the start, as we entered the pub it looked amazing and the garden was a real surprise even after I took a peek over the fence........as pub gardens go you would struggle to find a nicer one in the area, unfortunately we didn't sample the food but it looked amazing, we had a couple of drinks and a few games of boules in the garden, I could have stayed there all afternoon tbh and a bit sad I didn't but we had a nice time and I really hope I can visit again 🙏 this pub is absolutely definitely positively on my list as one of THE best pubs I have ever been to.........stunning and the good people of Hinton St. George are very lucky to be able to visit it regularly! 😫

Jon and his team are friendly and conscientious and a great credit to the Beckford Group. My brief overnight stay was very comfortable and having eaten here in the past I knew that the food would be good (although I wasn't expecting the chilled pea soup to be served hot).

Yelp
Great atmosphere, very good food and lovely good looking staff! A quiet Monday evening but all the candles were lit. The local beer was good, there was no bloody TV and if there was music I can't recall it. Our dinner was delicious, I had the vegetarian bread pudding which was very unusual and got 10/10. I'm not a veggie but it sounded a great dish and boy did it deliver. not cheap but a great indulgent night out.

Yelp
My second time at the Lord Poulett, first time for Sunday lunch. It was perfect today, great atmosphere and attentive staff. The roast lamb here was second only to my mums. There was a big portion of well cooked vegetables, and the lamb leg was served sous vide and chargrilled. The beetroot was a nice surprise, well roasted. A delicious home made mint sauce sealed the deal for me. The starter was an usual choice for me, tataki sea bass which was a sashimi style thing. Very delicate and flavoured with coriander and sesame oil. Three courses was probably too much for me, but I tucked it all away regardless. It was £21.50 for three courses, which is a generous price for that amount of quality food. The pud was brownie with whipped cream, fruit and nuts and chocolate and vanilla ice cream. I'm still stuffed full now three hours later. The village is very idyllic, reminded me of the place where the Vicar of Dibley was set. I'll go there again and again without doubt. I'd love to stay in one of the rooms too. 10/10.

Yelp
Third time to the Lord Poulett and it didn't disappoint! Had carrot soup for my starter, and duck breast for my main, and local cheeses to finish. Their menu is seasonal of course so it's constantly changing, although everything I've had there was wonderful. For the weekends definitely book ahead, there are always busy! Haven't been for lunch yet, but I'd love to as it's a lovely village to see.

Yelp
Famous across Somerset is the Lord Poulett Arms in Hinton St George (the village with Britain's longest life expectancy). Have been here numerous times over the last few years. The food and atmosphere is epic. On my most recent visit I tried the Steak Burger with their Triple Fried Fries, super! Staff are friendly, and went out of their way to contact us days after one of our party overpaid almost threefold! One of the best pub lunches in Somerset hands down..

Yelp
Astoundingly good food in a beautiful atmosphere. The staff leave you to it which is a delight because the food is so damn good. Local meat and vegetables knowledgably cooked. Also, old boys from the village at the bar having a pint.deserves its title as Dining Pub of the Year 2009.

Yelp
my ,in their 80's,parents took my sister & her chap + myself,my son & my husband here a few weeks ago,for sunday/birthday lunch, expecting to be able to have a roast meal, not pos at this pub.also portions small as far as my 2 men were concerned, starter & poods fine

Qype User (Bonele…)

Yelp
yes it is a pretty atmospheric pub just going for a drink it'd be great, but the food at dinner is expensive, portions small and cooking is in the fairly basic range.
