The Lord Poulett Arms, Hinton St George, Wiltshire - Explore & Book

"Our first impressions of Hinton St George were of style, tradition and serenity. The Lord Poulett Arms, therefore, is perfectly suited to its picturesque Somerset-village setting. When we arrived at the 17thC thatched pub, it was Happy Hour: a log fire was lit and locals were enjoying complimentary bar snacks and craft ales. Everyone, whether a regular or a visiting guest, was being greeted warmly by the smiling staff. This is clearly a hub for the community; we spotted the vicar chatting to the landed gentry, and, as more weekend guests arrived, everyone seemed to mix happily. If you’re looking for a fine example of an English country pub, you’ve come to the right place. For many, the food is the main attraction. Based upon the area’s excellent produce, menus change seasonally and are a perfect balance of hearty pub fare and refined gourmet options, all prepared with finesse. But upstairs 6 stylish bedrooms are a big draw, too. Fashionable touches (Berber rugs, modern art and rolltop baths) marry beautifully with flagstone walls and ancient fireplaces. All-in-all, another resounding triumph from the team behind The Beckford Arms and The Talbot Inn. Highs It’s worth coming for the food alone; stay the night and you'll get an excellent breakfast, too Just 6 stylish but comfortable rooms, with bathrobes and Bramley toiletries Amazing rates Wonderful countryside walks out from the village A sun-trap courtyard gardens with pretty trellises, shady spots and a petanque court Lows Two of the rooms have their bathrooms across the corridor rather then ensuite, but you’re unlikely to bump into anyone on the landing Breakfast finishes at 9:30am It's an old building so noise can carry. You might hear people in neighbouring rooms or in the bar if it is busy Closed Mondays and Tuesdays You'll need a car but arrival is easy, just off the A303, and although parking is on-street, it's a quiet village" - Abi Colgan

Second time staying here- cannot recommend enough! What delicious food- breakfast included and it’s so yummy! Staff super helpful and leave lovely biscuits and treats in the room. Rooms are very clean and maintained to an exceptional standard. Lots of parking along the street and lots to do nearby- recommend esp. if you are a National Trust member. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay.

Gorgeous pub for Sunday lunch - we didn’t stay so can’t comment on the rooms. The inside is beautiful, especially with the open fire and Christmas tree at the moment. We had 2 beef roasts and 1 pork, the beef was good, VERY pink, which I like, but I can imagine some people wouldn’t, the fat wasn’t rendered on the beef which wasn’t quite to my liking either. Eveything was cooked really well, sprouts & pancetta on the side are a must! I would’ve loved a bigger yorkie - but that’s just me. Dessert was the only negative, came out after about 30 mins and tasted burnt, the staff were super helpful and remedied straight away. Wonderful pub, gorgeous interiors and garden - a real local countryside gem.

What a wonderful stay we had. We went down this weekend to celebrate with our friends for their anniversary. From the moment you step instead a warm welcome awaits. Log fires and very cosy. We were greeted by John the landlord who showed us to our room. We had our dog with us and he was made welcome with a treat bag and the room was perfect. We had dinner in the evening and the menu choice and wine list. The village was quaint and good dog walks and very peaceful. Breakfast was excellent with a good selection of fruit, cereal and toast and a cooked breakfast and other options. Nothing was too much trouble. Staff were lovely. Highly recommend a stay for a weekend with great hospitality. Will certainly visit again. Thank you. Kim and Paul

What a wonderful place! My girlfriend took me here for my birthday. We were warmly greeted and the atmosphere in the pub was fantastic. The food was excellent and the room was comfortable. All the staff were lovely. The following day I managed to lock my car keys in the car and almost the whole village came out at various points to try to help. It's a special pub in a special village. Thank you for the wonderful hospitality!

My husband and I stayed here for one night and the experience was just perfect, from manager John's warm welcome and the beautiful room (we had the one with the bath) to the atmospheric and cosy pub (full of locals and buzzy even on a Sunday evening) and the excellent breakfast spread the next morning. It was the perfect country pub experience. We're already planning to return in the summer so we can enjoy the large garden too. Highly recommended.

Absolutely love this pub - the food is consistently excellent, with the majority of the menu being gluten-free which is a huge plus. The service is always friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming whether you're popping in for a few drinks, a casual dinner, or celebrating a special occasion. Highly recommend!

Second visit to a wonderful pub that is a little off the beaten track; not remote, but not on a main road. Service was top notch and the food was delightful. We had Sunday lunch and will be back next time we are in the area for sure.

Google
We absolutely loved our stay here. From driving into the stunning village of Hinton St George to the moment we left and received our 'pub crawl' loyalty card, the stay was impeccable. The room was gorgeous and just what we needed for some relaxation after a wedding weekend. We had dinner and breakfast at the pub and both were delicious. I would highly recommend this place to everyone!

Yelp
Great atmosphere, very good food and lovely good looking staff! A quiet Monday evening but all the candles were lit. The local beer was good, there was no bloody TV and if there was music I can't recall it. Our dinner was delicious, I had the vegetarian bread pudding which was very unusual and got 10/10. I'm not a veggie but it sounded a great dish and boy did it deliver. not cheap but a great indulgent night out.

Yelp
My second time at the Lord Poulett, first time for Sunday lunch. It was perfect today, great atmosphere and attentive staff. The roast lamb here was second only to my mums. There was a big portion of well cooked vegetables, and the lamb leg was served sous vide and chargrilled. The beetroot was a nice surprise, well roasted. A delicious home made mint sauce sealed the deal for me. The starter was an usual choice for me, tataki sea bass which was a sashimi style thing. Very delicate and flavoured with coriander and sesame oil. Three courses was probably too much for me, but I tucked it all away regardless. It was £21.50 for three courses, which is a generous price for that amount of quality food. The pud was brownie with whipped cream, fruit and nuts and chocolate and vanilla ice cream. I'm still stuffed full now three hours later. The village is very idyllic, reminded me of the place where the Vicar of Dibley was set. I'll go there again and again without doubt. I'd love to stay in one of the rooms too. 10/10.

Yelp
Third time to the Lord Poulett and it didn't disappoint! Had carrot soup for my starter, and duck breast for my main, and local cheeses to finish. Their menu is seasonal of course so it's constantly changing, although everything I've had there was wonderful. For the weekends definitely book ahead, there are always busy! Haven't been for lunch yet, but I'd love to as it's a lovely village to see.

Yelp
Famous across Somerset is the Lord Poulett Arms in Hinton St George (the village with Britain's longest life expectancy). Have been here numerous times over the last few years. The food and atmosphere is epic. On my most recent visit I tried the Steak Burger with their Triple Fried Fries, super! Staff are friendly, and went out of their way to contact us days after one of our party overpaid almost threefold! One of the best pub lunches in Somerset hands down..

Yelp
Astoundingly good food in a beautiful atmosphere. The staff leave you to it which is a delight because the food is so damn good. Local meat and vegetables knowledgably cooked. Also, old boys from the village at the bar having a pint.deserves its title as Dining Pub of the Year 2009.

Yelp
yes it is a pretty atmospheric pub just going for a drink it'd be great, but the food at dinner is expensive, portions small and cooking is in the fairly basic range.
