Lorton Auto Train Station

After years of traveling and driving to Orlando, we decided to use Amtrak’s auto train departing out of Lorton, Virginia. What a great experience! As instructed, we pulled in to the station entrance and waited in line until they began their process. It was easy and efficient, and the staff was awesome. We found the waiting area to be comfortable and clean for the limited time we were there. The train left on time, and the audio instructions were clear and easy to follow. The station has a small gift shop, which has a lot of items for purchase. We purchased accommodations in a sleeping car, and it was extremely comfortable. I have to admit I was surprised and was able to actually get a good nights sleep. The dining car meal was very good and we got to meet some very nice people along the way. Overall, it was a great experience, and I will be doing that again in the future.

The staff is awesome. ...even entertaining!! Quarters are tight! Seniors would definitely have a hard time on the top bunk. Not a good ride for those that do not like being confined or not being able to smoke. We enjoyed our trip!!

We had a great time riding the Amtrak train. The dinner optios were good and tasty and so it was the spinach quiche we had for breakfast. Always take an extra pillow and blanket to make the trip even more comfortable.

Smooth and efficient. Didn't wait long to check in. Recommend bringing your own food. Gift shop and on the train very expensive and not much choice.

I took the auto train in order to transport a car to Florida. It was about the same as shipping it with a broker & their hired transporter & more reliable. The reservation process was easy, the dropping off of the vehicle was easy, check in was easy, but arriving 2 hours before departure only left me the late dinner seating of 9pm. I was told that in order to get earlier seatings, that I would have had to arrive at 8am!! That’s crazy. I booked a roomette. It was very comfortable albeit very tight when made up for sleeping. There is just enough room for one person to stand on the floor. The bed was comfortable, including the pillows. The shared bathroom was clean and very much like what is found on an airplane. I ordered a kosher meal - beef. While the beef itself was tasty, the basmati rice was hard as rock & and stuck like a triangular patty. The baby carrots were soft & mushy. I was hungry, so I ate it. I didn’t bother with breakfast as there was only one hour given for it & it was available to every passenger on the train. That is not reasonable, but since there is coffee in each sleeper car, I was fine. I had brought food with me. I was able to sleep better than I had anticipated & that was a welcome surprise. The crew were all friendly, helpful & nice. Overall it was a very good experience & would not hesitate to do it again.

Love the auto-train since 2011. The area has expanded greatly but as a nation we need to put more tax dollars on our high speed rail system! Expansion upgrade cars and add keeping area more Mobility spaces for the elderly and disabled

Lay down some new track - I felt like I was on a stagecoach! This is the 21st century! Train left Florida at 4 pm. It wasn't until 5:30 am that we began to have a smooth, quiet ride! The train clinked and clanged and groaned ALL night long. It tipped and turned and went up and down. They call it a sleeper? I don't know what drug you'd have to be on to sleep, but you'd need plenty of it! Is this the best we can do for a first-class EXPENSIVE rail experience? Unless it's an emergency, find another mode of travel. This service has gone way downhill! And by the way, the quality of the food has declined as well and loading and unloading of vehicles has too! It was 1-1/2 hours before my vehicle was unloaded and I arrived in Sanford early. Oh, yes, the train averaged 45 mph!!! Has anyone noticed the speed of trains in Europe, in Japan, in China? STOP LETTING THE HELP RUN THE SHOW HERE — this organization needs management! This is a stagecoach!!! A COMPLETE DISASTER!!

Amtrak auto train is a great way to travel with your car. If your traveling during the snowbird season, you can't beat it. No traffic, no delays, no weather problems. Leave the station in the afternoon and arrive the next morning while you sleep. The crew is very friendly, hospitable, helpful and informative. The coach class is spacious and comfortable with large reclining seats with leg and foot rest. Food can also be purchased on board and sleeper / diner cars are also available . F .Y. I. cost does very greatly based on seasonal migration
