I took the auto train in order to transport a car to Florida. It was about the same as shipping it with a broker & their hired transporter & more reliable.
The reservation process was easy, the dropping off of the vehicle was easy, check in was easy, but arriving 2 hours before departure only left me the late dinner seating of 9pm. I was told that in order to get earlier seatings, that I would have had to arrive at 8am!! That’s crazy.
I booked a roomette. It was very comfortable albeit very tight when made up for sleeping. There is just enough room for one person to stand on the floor. The bed was comfortable, including the pillows. The shared bathroom was clean and very much like what is found on an airplane.
I ordered a kosher meal - beef. While the beef itself was tasty, the basmati rice was hard as rock & and stuck like a triangular patty. The baby carrots were soft & mushy. I was hungry, so I ate it.
I didn’t bother with breakfast as there was only one hour given for it & it was available to every passenger on the train. That is not reasonable, but since there is coffee in each sleeper car, I was fine. I had brought food with me.
I was able to sleep better than I had anticipated & that was a welcome surprise.
The crew were all friendly, helpful & nice.
Overall it was a very good experience & would not hesitate to do it again.
