On the Grid : New School of Cooking Cafe

"We've been fans of New School of Cooking since day one. It's attached to the New School of Culinary School – great for recreational cooks wanting to learn new techniques or professionals looking to tighten up their skills. It's a no brainer for a morning coffee–they serve Stumptown–and a pastry or fresh baked bread. It's not just for breakfast though, come back in the afternoon for a solid lunch menu." - Rapt Studio

I attended the French Bistro class. It was amazing. The steak we cooked was much better than any steak I’d had before. The garlic paste topping and peppercorn sauce - wow! I also learned lots of little tricks to improve my cooking.

This was insanely boring, I literally felt like i was back at my lecture for chemistry in high school. We were watching her bake instead of baking. The instructor did two demos and made us watch without being able to follow instruction so we basically forgot everything. She also took up a lot of time.We also had to share our recipes and materials with a different couple even though we payed to have our own and every other table had their own stuff. Don’t spend your money here. The instructor was not that friendly and totally not organized so we just ended up leaving. I have taken baking classes before and this was not it I’d say find else where.

Took a date night class and had a blast! Chef Leslie made it fun, easy, and delicious. Highly recommend for a unique night out!

Google
Fun date night with great atmosphere and even better food! Lovely instructors with a vast variety of cuisines/options. We learned so much about cooking and will definitely be back!

Our whole family LOVES the Los Angeles Cooking School. The manager Gerard is wonderful to work with and makes magic happen there. The place has such a warm, homey vibe and all of the people who work there are so nice and supportive, especially Chef Mani. The classes they run for kids teach them practical cooking skills and encourage them to be creative. The adult classes are fun and the food we make is delicious. Everything is clean and beautiful!

The Coffee shop is never ready when I get there so have yet to try any sandwiches but did go in there for the Blue Nova ice cream parlor I'm the evening! Sooooo good and the kicker is that you get to see how it's made on the tv monitor in the front. This blows Cool Haus out the door. Loved this ice cream place!! I recommend the Matcha Green Tea....Delicious!!!

Yelp
I have taken several classes at LACS including a basic 4 week beginner series, Thanksgiving vegetarian side dishes, crust making/pie baking, fish 101, and most recently (last week) Winter in Tuscany. I have both enjoyed and greatly benefitted from all of these courses. The facility is immaculately clean; the chefs are experienced, knowledgeable, helpful, and enthusiastic. Chef Jess who guided the class through Winter in Tuscany is exceptional. I heartily encouraged you to treat yourself to an engaging, worthwhile, and delicious class at LA Cooking School. Terry A

Yelp
What a great experience we had! We attended the Argentinian cooking class on 7/14. Aydee, our instructor was awesome, and Mercy an exceptional assistant. She welcomed us warmly and friendly. She was great at explaining techniques, ingredients, and more importantly interacted quite nicely with all attendees. By the end of the night, we enjoyed chimichurri, empanadas, skirt steak, and roasted chicken. Can't say enough, so much fun was had. Greatly enjoyed it and look forward to attending the next cooking class. I highly recommend.

Yelp
I took a fall pie baking class with Jen who was fantastic, she taught us quite a bit about baking techniques and created a great atmosphere to learn more.

Yelp
Attended the Knife Skills class last night and had the best time. The instructor, Manifa, was really friendly and presented the information in a very clear and easy-to-understand manner (her assistant, Mercy, was also fantastic!) Everything was well organized; the workstations were neat, clean and had all of the tools and veg we needed. The demonstrations were really helpful, and when it came time to do the knife cuts ourselves, Manifa paid attention to each of us in a caring, clear and encouraging way so that we felt confident in using the knives correctly. The veg cuts turned out beautifully. Once we finished prepping the veg and our mise-en-place was ready, we were shown how to cook the ratatouille, which turned out great! It was a really good dish, appropriate for most diets (not great for low-fat or low-salt diets, but awesome for everything else). Definitely going to take more classes - Chicken 101, Sauces, Beef 101...here I come!

Yelp
Such a fun experience and highly recommend! This is an awesome thing to do if you're looking for a new date idea, team building and bonding with a work group, a family outing or even just solo if you want to go outside of your comfort zone (trying something new including recipes)! The chef and her assistant were so nice and the entire experience was a blast.

Yelp
Went here last night for a team building event and have for to say it was perfect! Well organized, clean and relaxed environment! We learned how to make Thai food. The chef was accommodating to dietary restrictions which was important. Manifa the head chef was such a pleasure. She had a great personality and was very engaging. Everyone there had a great time. I would highly recommend us for teambuilding activities, bachelorette parties, or just a fun date night activity.

Yelp
A few friends and I went here to learn how to make macarons. Side note, Mani's (the chef instructor) macarons were the best I've ever tasted!! Mani was very nice, patient, understanding and accommodating. The whole experience was well organized and we got to take home so many macarons! Our friends and I can't wait to come back and learn more! Thank you, Mani!

Yelp
The LACS kitchen is awesome! I've rented quite a few commercial kitchens in the past to do meal prep for a large number of meals (400!) and after moving to LA was in search of a great kitchen to rent to do this. After exploring many options I landed on LACS based on the recommendation of a friend who also cooks there. The kitchen space is perfect and spacious, the equipment is very well maintained, they have everything you could need or want, and the owner Gerard is not only very friendly, but a wealth of knowledge. I had a great experience here and highly recommend it. I'll be back!!

Yelp
Chef Manifa taught an amazing class! She was extremely knowledgeable and even more personable while imparting some great cooking tips throughout the entire evening. Would very much recommend any class she is teaching!

Yelp
We had a really great time preparing two delicious One Pot Meals. They were Korean Crispy Chicken with Veggies & Honey Braised Meatballs. The Chef was patient & very easy to follow. It's a bit of a drive but I'm sure we'll be back!

Yelp
Just took a cooking class my friend brought me to with Chef Manifa - Provence themed. It was so fun! The food was incredible (I surprised myself!) and such a fun way to spend the evening. All the staff if so helpful and kind. I can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Friendly, attentive, engaging staff and the food? I ate so much, it was really good. Normally I'm not in love with middle eastern food but they do something delicious with theirs. Authenticity. Go. Eat. New region each month! You're welcome.

Yelp
I took a course in "Knife Skills" last night -- my first class at LACS -- and it was terrific. Manny is a wonderful teacher. I learned a lot and even got to prepare a delicious ratatouille to try out my newly learned skills and feed myself! I'm a rank amateur in the kitchen, so if you're at all nervous about taking a class, don't be. Manny makes it fun for learners at all levels and you'll have a great time.

Yelp
Had an amazing time at the Argentinian cooking class. The atmosphere was so welcoming and the instructor was amazing as well. Great experience!! Can't wait to do it again !

Yelp
LACS and their staff are fantastic. I organized a Thai cooking class with chef Mani and she led an amazing class. Before the class the business staff and Gerard were great communicators, they offered several menu options and helped ensure a safe class for vegans, those with peanut and shellfish allergies. No one went hungry with tons of snacks and drinks to enjoy during the demo and class. Chef led a great demo showing exactly how to cook each course. The staff prepped our ingredients so we could easily split into teams to cook each dish in smaller groups. Your team gets to interact and help each other the entire time and the chef, sous chef and assistant all stay in the mix helping a ton. Our team of 22 remarked at how many things they learned compared to other cooking classes. To boot the LACS class just keeps getting better as you get to finish with the delicious and huge meal you just cooked. Best cooking class I've ever taken and so impressed that our group of 22 didn't feel overwhelming!! It was the perfect end to our team summit.
