Searching for the Perfect Taco in Tlaxcala, Mexico - AFAR

"A visually appealing roadside spot where the barbacoa itself is tempered by a strikingly deep, dark-red salsa whose bold flavor compensates for a milder meat; the place catches the eye and relies on its sauces to define the meal." - Naomi Tomky

Took a little while to get our food, but always a pleasant atmosphere and nice employees. Delicious food. Very welcoming. Never rushes you to get out even past Closing.

Google
Horrible experience here. Got takeout at 6:30 (peak dinner time) on a Sunday. Brought 2 veggie burritos home and 1 veggie fajitas. When I got home and opened up the bag, My veggie fajitas had chicken in it and the 2 veggie burritos had uncooked or overcooked rice in it (crunchy rice). I called the restaurant up and lady answered the phone saying they are closed now but she will refund first thing on Tuesday. She never refunded it so i called the store and now everyone is denying my refund. Trust has been lost here after coming here for so many years. If they care, they will call me and refund me. Cant believe this shady business practice. Whats even crazier is that when i called back on Sunday after getting home and seeing the chicken and crunchy rice in the burritos, she claims thats how it is when you come in at 6:30 (half hour before close). Not an appropriate response but i accepted it because she said she was going to refund me but NOPE. This business is sketchy. Here is a picture of chicken in my “vegetarian fajitas). DON’T COME HERE

Google
Such a great spot. I go a lot with my friend Alice. The Super Chavelas are amazing! These folks know what they're doing! The steak fajitas are to-die-for! I love that you get 3 different complimentary salsas with your basket of chips!

JJ J.

Google
Don’t ask just judge for yourself but you won’t be disappointed! First time here and asked for a recommendation and the owner said everything was good. Ordered the chicken adobado and extremely tasty and not dry! What are you waiting for?!? Come and enjoy the food :D

Wheelos D.

Google
Great baja Mexican cuisine. amazing food, excellent drinks, really good service. I highly recommend this place.

Google
First visit to this family owned taqueria hidden away on old Oakland Rd. Great complimentary chips and salsa to start. I had the beef quesadilla while friends had chicken fajitas and adobe. I especially loved the tortillas which tasted so much better than the chain store ones. Service was a bit slow but not too bad.

Matthew L.

Google
Absolutely amazing! The verde salsa was fresh and creamy, the Margarita perfectly balanced, and the rib eye carne asada tender and full of flavor. Authentic, delicious, and unforgettable!

Michael H.

Google
The food was not greasy. The cadillac margarita was fire. My girl is Mexican and she fell in love with this food. Must try. Gives that feeling like your home!

Yelp
By far the best and only place I come for aguachile, and a great staff, feels more like family every time I come in. Try their super burritos too!! BEER IS ALWAYS COLD!

Yelp
Delicious breakfast, disappointing fish. The best way to describe this place is that it's a Mexican sports bar. They have lots of TVs to watch sports, a full bar, and friendly service. The breakfast plates are highly recommended. Their eggs with chorizo were very tasty. Things that also were good: their beans, their rice, their fresh corn tortillas. The grilled chicken was flavorful and juicy. The Margarita was generous and well-balanced. Less good: the pescado al ajillo was surprisingly dry and just not very good. It was not prepared the way I usually see for this recipe, seemingly deep friend and also not having much of a sauce. The flour tortillas seemed to be homemade, which is awesome, but they were a bit dry and stiff. Definitely recommended for a casual breakfast or lunch, especially if you want to watch sports. Not everything on the menu may be a slam dunk.

Yelp
Had the misfortune of eating food prepared by this restaurant. Crunch crunch crunch - ask your dentist if you can eat crunchy rice that has the potential to break your teeth before dining here. The food is old and sketchy. Not properly cooked. I would skip. They also have rude staff - make you think they're doing you a favor by serving yo

Yelp
We had great service and excellent food. Even the chips and salsas were wonderful! Great place to watch a game too!

Yelp
I am just sharing an update that after the restaurant served us uncooked rice and added chicken in a vegetarian order, they refused to fix the order a following visit and they refused a refund. We had to dispute the charges with our bank account. Terrible customer service, terrible food, never going here again and I suggest that no one else go unless you want stomach issues. I would give zero stars if that were possible.

Yelp
I love coming here before I head to work once a month or so. It's family owned which to me is a great factor when choosing where to spend my time and money. The chips and salsa's are amazing, 3 different salsa's too. I usually get foods here that I wouldn't normally try anywhere else because it's so good here. Beef rib pieces with red sauce and Nopales (cactus) was really good. The parking can be tight once your in there, it's the same parking lot that shares a hotel as well. The service has always been great, they usually have sports of some sort on. The place is decorated well, it's well lit with natural sunlight. If you sit at the bar you will get great service for sure from Erica, she is super nice Bust out your not so great Spanish like I do to try and practice here, either way they got you. New updated menu pics too.

And the food is delicious and the service is so nice they always are there when your there. if you reading this you need to go I promise you this is one of the best Mexican Restaurant no joke. And they have a Jute box that plays music and they have Tvs this place is amazing!

Yelp
al pastor - good chunky salsa and red salsa in the bottle is pretty good. The place looks a little run down though. 2017

Yelp
This review is hard to write because we've been coming here for years . Always happy to support this small family business. But after what happened during my sister's birthday dinner, I'm done. I'll never come back. I brought a few simple decorations to make the night special a tablecloth, balloons, and some light confetti. That's it. Nothing over the top. But the owner came over with the nastiest attitude and said, "You can't be doing that" in a tone that felt aggressive and downright rude. I felt embarrassed and completely uncomfortable. He didn't try to be respectful about it at all . he made us feel like a burden. Even though I told him I would clean it up, he hovered with this miserable energy. Then toward the end of our dinner, he literally turned off the lights near us, like we were being rushed out in the middle of a birthday celebration! Seriously? I even spoke to the young woman working there (possibly his daughter), and she kindly told me not to worry about cleaning but I couldn't shake how horrible the owner had been from start to finish. After all the years of support, he treated us like strangers who weren't welcome. It was rude, unnecessary, and honestly pretty shameful. No one deserves to feel that way!! especially during a celebration. That was my last visit. I'll never spend another dollar here and i will never refer anyone to come and eat here again! Owner should be ashamed of his behavior!

Yelp
Very family friendly environment. I ate here with my colleagues. The food is authentic and it is delicious. I ordered birria and it was very tasty. I also ordered a margarita.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
The burrito I had was yummy! Ordering was easy at the register. Inside they have tv's playing sports and a lot of tables and chairs for customers. Parking is in the back and then you walk around to the front entrance. They have a nicely painted mural on the side wall. It's not a new remodeled place inside, but it gets the job done and I enjoyed my burrito. I would come back. Thank you. I was definitely the only non Hispanic person in there.

Yelp
The food is excellent. Best chili rellenos. Fantastic margaritas but what is that smell??? I think it is a sewer system problem.

Dana K.

Yelp
The huge Cadillac Margarita and Enchilada plate was very tasty. They also bring out chips with 3 different dipping sauces at no extra charge. A cozy sports bar setting. Service was friendly. The only challenge was finding a parking spot at dinner time since it is usually crowded. We ended up parking across the street at an open business park.
google avatar

Yelp
Took Hubby and MIL Saturday at 11:30 I'm so grateful we came right then one family eating as soon as we sat down the place was packed. Service could be better just two people need one to just replenish chips and drinks. Overall food delicious .

Yelp
IMHO I love Mexican food! Our friends suggested going to Los Garcias for dinner! This was my first visit here and it won't be my last! We could tell this is a popular place to eat since it was packed, but thankfully there were still a few open tables to choose from. The guys ordered Cadillac Margaritas. "Of course!" said our friendly waitress! We ordered combo platters and a lengua platter, guacamole & chips, along with the free chips they give you. Our food came out piping hot and delicious! The beans were nice and creamy. Nothing to complain about! Can't wait to come back! Service was genuinely friendly and courteous! You can tell this is a family-run establishment. Get thee to Los Garcias!

Yelp
Long waits when it's busy, but their shrimp tacos and other shrimp dishes are delicious! Their salsas are also really good with their complimentary chips. Rest (we tried the burritos, tacos and quesadillas) is pretty solid. Great place to go after you have volunteered at City Team!

Dennis M.

Yelp
Our favorite Mexican Restaurant. Besides the tastiest food, they make the best Cadillac Margarita in town.

Doris C.

Yelp
Great food! I got a wet green chicken burrito and loved it. My husband loved his fajitas. Nice informal atmosphere. Just what we were looking for on our visit to San Jose.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good Mexican food and drinks! It's located where an inn is. The parking lot is shared by inn and the restaurant. We ordered a Michelada and a Lengua plate to share. I also got to try the Steak Ranchero plate. The meats were all tender. Had a little spice to it too. Very good flavor. The 1942 Don Julio shot was around $30. Fast service. Casual place. It was busy when we came Thursday around 5:30pm. We had a big group that came at 5pm to get a bigger table.

Rudy P.

Yelp
UPDATE: They did not give me a refund and refused to do so. I called in about 4 times and everyone just tried to pass the buck and no one called me back. Horrible customer service. Do NOT go.

Yelp
Stop in to grab a bite to eat, I read the other reviews and decided to give it a try. The taco , chips and salsa were good, I had also ordered the Chili Colorado's plate that came with rice and beans with flour tortillas . I was disappointed in the plate, the red sauce had no flavor was very bland and the meat could have been cooked longer. The meat had a bit of funny taste and a bit fatty taste too. The rice was old and dry along with the tortillas that were also old or left overs. On top of that they also charged a procurement fee on the bill. I was hoping for a good experience and a good meal but unfortunately was let down. The service could improve too , no one greeted us when we entered and never came back to check on us, only to drop off check‍

Yelp
This place is amazing!! Good food, great service, and a festive vibe as soon as you walk inside. This was our second visit to this establishment was even better than the first. The servers make you feel right at home. The salsa and chips are very good, the cocktails are exceptional, and the people who come here are regulars as well as newcomers. The location to get there is confusing when you use your GPS but it's not that hard to find. We even got the opportunity to see a Maruachi Band come in and perform for a nice lady who was celebrating her 94th Birthday with her family. Highly recommend going to have dinner or lunch there. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
A nice little place with a bat. Went at linch and had a good amount of people inside. First thing I noticed was a lot of margaritas on tables and bar. I would have got one but that whole work day thing. Again I ordered a carnitas burrito, they do not have a super so just a regular today. The flavor was good, very authentic traditional flavor. The burrito could have been bigger. I did say avocado, and got one slice. The food that was coming out to tables while I waited for my pick up all looked great, I will return and try another option. You can call ahead for pick up. Parking was tight. Staff VERY nice.

Yelp
I've been to this place at least 3 times and it's been great. This place does not disappoint my favorite is the fajita plates. The service has always been good and the staff is very friendly. After 2 years of coming here I decided to leave a review today after witnessing a rude individual in there who started yelling at the staff, I don't know exactly what happened but I know there is no reason to yell at elders and make such a scene. I think it was about outside food being brought in. I'm glad they asked him to leave, I'm surprised they didn't call the police.

Boyo I.

Yelp
Thoroughly tasty homemade tasting Mexican food. The style is traditional Mexican-American. The ambience is that of a neighborhood sitdown restaurant with a bit of a sports bar vibe. (Apt signed Jeff Garcia jersey). The standout was the shrimp taco which was heavy with garlic. If the test of such a restaurant is the refried beans, Los Garcias gets an A. Prices were better than decent. All in all, this is a go-to place in San Jose.
google avatar

Tiffany D.

Yelp
It's a typical hole in the wall kind of place with minimal parking in the back, but that's how you know the food is going to be amazing!! You get a free tray of chips and three kinds of salsa and the chips were delicious! They feel homemade since I've never had chips like that. Refills cost money. There was a variety of different options, and I decided to go with the Super Tacos. They were huge I barely finished two. They were so flavorful and a tip is using the salsa they gave for the chips on the tacos! I would definitely go again! We were around dinner time and there was a line forming so it's best to go earlier.

Yelp
I've visited Los Garcias a few times and felt it was time to share my experience. It has been around for decades, and it never disappoints! I love supporting these mom-and-pop shops, and on every visit, I get to experience how much love this family puts into this restaurant. I usually order my norm, which is a carne asada plate with rice and beans. The cut of meat they use is top-notch and cooked to perfection. As many of you know, carne asada can easily be the best or the worst protein on your plate. For the record, LGR's carne asada has hit hard on every visit! It is tasty, tender, juicy, and just downright good! Their rice and beans here are always on point and pair excellently. Service is always friendly, and everything is priced just right. It can get a little busy during the lunch rush, but it comes with the territory when you serve great food. LGR will continue to be my carne asada spot of choice in the bay!

Yelp
We came here for Saturday lunch at 12ish. Los Garcias was surprisingly not busy. We got our order placed almost instantly and the food shows up in less than 10 minutes. Everything seemed to move much faster this time haha. As usual I got tostaditas with lengua (beef tongue), carne asadas, and carnitas (fried pork). OMG the meat was so good! I haven't been here for so long that the deliciousness of the meat blew my mind for a bit. Lengua was as amazing as usual, never tried their carnitas before and it was fried to perfection, carne asadas was delicious as well! Unfortunately, my vegetarian friends didn't enjoy their veggie burritos as much as I enjoyed my meat. Their veggie burritos were described as not very flavorful. So if you are a vegetarian, think twice.

Yelp
This place exceeded my expectations! The food was flavorful, tasty, and incredibly satisfying. The customer service was excellent, and I appreciated how clean and well-maintained the restaurant was. I'll definitely be returning!

Yelp
Los Garcias is a family-owned business that has been serving great food for years. It's a local favorite. The restaurant faces Old Oakland Road. Though, the place is sorta hard to find, as it shares the same driveway/Parking lot with Alura Hotel. The inside has a bar with bar seating, in addition to inside dining. The place is small, and can accommodate groups of 6. I enjoyed my Burrito with Al Pastor. The meat was marinated well and cooked with bell peppers. They also include avocado and red and green chili sauces. Also, I had a taco with Carnitas. This was basic. I'll try another meat next time. Service was good. The cashier was sweet and friendly.

Lisa D.

Yelp
Called in a pastor burrito and Jamica was told it would take 20 mins and when I arrived it was ready the only downside is the parking is shared with the hotel so when it's lunch time it gets packed but the food was great and staff was very courteous

Anna D.

Yelp
I would give this place zero stars if I could service is mediocre food is horrible and I did not like what I ordered and asked for to be exchanged and they charge me for both meals. No apologies so guess what? No tip. Went there for a birthday party for my mother-in-law will never go back.

Leticia C.

Yelp
Great Menudo and Margaritas were tasty. Service is super slow! The wait staff are not cheerful. The area is sketchy. Not sure I would go again.

Kaliya M.

Yelp
I've been here about 5 times with coworkers and friends. Each time is weirder than the last, and our recent trip put the nail in the coffin. My friend, we'll call him Dan, visited Garcias more than me. On one occasion, he asked for a chorizo taco (which was literally on the menu) and was rudely told that's not something they do there. He jokingly said "Oh no what? Ok I'll just get carne asada," and that could've been the end of it. But the owner scoffed at him, left and gave him a chorizo??? It was such a weird vibe. We went again yesterday, hoping the weird behavior was a one off thing. But it feels like they have a weird vendetta against us. We sat down for 30 minutes before someone visited our table, and when Dan ordered two tacos they only came out with one. We were so annoyed for him but just moved on, and when we went to pay the owner asked if he'd gotten both. When he said no, she said "Oh, I won't charge you then." As if she was doing US a favor for not charging him for food he didn't get. I know it sounds kinda ridiculous, but the vibe is just so off here. The staff act like they're annoyed you're there. Oh, and I forgot to mention. Dan got food poisoning after that. What the hell Garcias? Find another taqueria to visit. Don't try to be lighthearted with staff or risk their wrath. 0/10 customer service.

Mahima D.

Yelp
+ big portions, yummy food + was pretty crowded but didn't have to wait for a table + garlic shrimp plate was really good! So flavorful + sports games on, sports bar vibe but not too loud, lot of families eating here when we came - slightly slow service / may be a little understaffed but the wait wasn't too bad
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Love this place, it was my first time being here and the Carnitas were well-made, but the lingua is so, so good!! I really like tortillas they hand make their. To be frank, next time I intend on getting just two regular tacos instead of super since I don't like beans with my tacos.
google avatar

Kayla W.

Yelp
The best salsa! The best margs! This is definitely one of our favorite spots for tacos in the South Bay. We've been going for years. We love the super tacos.
google avatar

M K.

Yelp
Great spot for authentic Mexican food . The flour tortillas are amazing fresh and home made and let's not forget the margaritas. They are always a generous pour . You are really lucky if you can finish one all by yourself . It's gets busy , so try to come early to get a spot. They are also closed on mondays .

James V.

Yelp
This is now my go to spot for Mexican food. My comfort food place. Can't get enough once you've had this place you'll be coming back for more

K J.

Yelp
Best Mexican food in San Jose. The services was great. The chips and salsa was so so good. Homemade tortillas were amazing.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem their food is super good and they're spicy salsa is not too spicy which I like they have great customer service and easy parking
google avatar

Reena F.

Yelp
On the other night, we felt lazy cooking and got in right before it was closed. It's a hidden gem with a chilled vibe. Food and drink were great. Staff was friendly and attentive. We will be back to try more items.

Yelp
We were in town visiting family and tried this place for the first time and it completely blew our mind! We almost missed it when driving it's a very small tucked in an industrial area. When we got there it was not that full but it was a Sunday so people started rolling in around 12. The bar area was very busy but we got seating after like 5 minutes because there was only one server and she was taking an order for a table of about 10-12 people. The 3 salsas they brought out with the chips were outstanding. The green creamy salsa was my favorite but they were all really good! The coffee was also very delicious, I ordered the chorizo con papas burrito which had beans, potatoes and chorizo. My dad ordered a mulita and my mom also ordered the chorizo con papas but the plate version and boy the tortillas really just kicked it up a notch! Something about homemade corn tortillas will elevate any dish regardless of how delicious it already is! I will definitely be going back whenever I'm in town. The parking is set in the back of the restaurant next to a motel and they are all pretty compact but other than that we will be back! I was so excited for the food I didn't take a picture!

James P. C.

Yelp
Smallest burrito bowl I've ever been served (Here are some extra words to make the review long enough to submit.)

Tiania C.

Yelp
Ooohh this place is absolutely amazing. The food is delicious, the price isn't bad and the portions are so worth it. I was introduced to this by a friend and it is now my default place to go when I want bomb Mexican food. I personally love their carne asada fries and they are absolutely amazing every time. The only other place I've liked carne asada fries is in San Diego. Tips to find the place: if you see the hotel, turn in! Don't be like me and miss it the first couple of times. Second tip, carpool if you can. This place is popping everytime I've been and the parking can get iffy. There are also other businesses in the same area and not nearly enough parking so carpool is necessary. Bring an appetite and I'd look over the menu really quick before you come just so you aren't overwhelmed and can spend most of the time eating your food rather than ordering. Or, you can order ahead and pick up your food. ;) The last time I went here, the place was noisy (in a good way) , plenty of TVs showing sports, and everyone was happy and enjoying their food. The only reasons why I didn't give it 5 stars was the parking and the wait time for the food. Parking is right as I mentioned before. Wait time always feels super long though that honestly might be because I'm always looking forward to the food and therefore starving so nevermind, my rating is a 4.5 not 4. Tldr I highly recommend and just carpool so that you don't have to worry about parking as much.
google avatar

Jeremy E.

Yelp
Home made tortillas were awesome! All the food was really good and friendly service. Really cool low key Mexican restaurant.
google avatar

Gina P.

Yelp
Delicious carnitas and micheladas. The salsas were spicy and the tortilla chips good. We make sure to stop here every time we are on the mainland

Joey R.

Yelp
The food is good and the chavelas were the only reason why I went here, but their service is terrible. It's family owned and the two female waitresses are horrible. They get annoyed by any request you ask. They never come to your table and ask if you need anything you always have to flag them down. The receipt is not itemized they are written on a receipt that looks like chicken scratch so you do know what you were charged for. It's 2025!!! How do you not print out an itemized receipt????
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
Fire! I went there for the first time tonight and dined in alone. They were very generous with the chips and salsa, with 3 types of salsa! The food was delicious and fresh! Treated everyone like family, good home cooked meal. Nice decorations, lots of business.
