Where to Stay in Medellín: The Best Neighborhoods for Your Visit

"I found this award-winning hostel to be one of the best in the city, with a rooftop pool, co-working stations, a gym, a garden, and plenty of social spaces." - Matthew Kepnes

I stayed in a 4 dorm room at los patios for 4 nights. I had high expectations given that it is a “boutique hostel” but left feeling reasonably disappointed. First off, it is just a regular hostel. Is it marginally nicer than average? Probably. But it isnt anything fancy. Certainly not “boutique”. The room I was in was not large and was on the fifth floor, beneath the rooftop deck (more on that later). It did not have air conditioning but did have fans. I noticed that several things did not work, including the fans (resolved quickly by the hostel) and the showers not working or draining quickly. It’s also important to note that there is only a single toilet/shower/sink per floor, so I often had to go to other floors. They also have a pool, but it is located in the other building and is quite small considering the number of people in the hostel. I had hopes for the social aspects of this hostel, but soon realized that the vast majority of social events held by the hostel revolved around dancing and/or drinking heavily. I’m not a dancer or a partier so I did not attend these. I did book the comuna 13 and guatape tours with their affiliated company. These were fine, but the tours can include people from outside the hostel, and the tour guides didn’t put effort in getting the groups to intermingle. Didn’t have much luck with my bunkmates either. Not a single person stayed more than a single night. “Highlight” was an incredibly rude family that demanded the lights be turned on and talked at full volume at midnight and 8am. My biggest complaint with this hostel (and this is probably a medellin thing) was the partying/noise. As mentioned before, I was beneath the rooftop patio bar, which constantly blasted music in the evenings. I could feel the bass in my bed. It usually wasn’t too bad - ending between 10-11pm, but it was really bad on christmas eve. The music was even louder than usual and went on for longer than before. I was in bed trying to get rest in as I wasn’t feeling well. I raised this issue to the hostel and they simply apologized and that it was a special event. They offered a minor (and I mean MINOR) compensation along with a free breakfast item. I chose to take this offer as it was better than nothing, but nowhere near compensates for their inability to provide quiet accommodation. There were some good things: the beds were larger/longer than usual (for a hostel) and the staff were responsive over whatsapp

I’ve stayed at many hostels and this is one of the best hostels out there! Everyday there are activities, something for everyone to do! If you want to party the Boutique hostel has a pub crawl every night and the bar offers increíble views! If you prefer a quiet night, the suites offers a more quiet atmosphere with a nice pool and panoramic views! There are daily tours you can do through the hostel which offer transportation and take away the hassle of planning activities! The staff is incredibly nice! Everyone from the bartenders, to the reception team, to the security at night are all incredible people! The location is so nice offering so many delicious food spots, public transportation nearby and a very safe area to walk alone! The room amenities are great and the beds are very comfortable! Overall, I have not found a better hostel than Los Patios in Medellin!

First time ever staying in a hostel and I loved every thing about Los Patios in Medellin. There was so much to do and so many activities that were offered, many of them free. A special shout out to Juliana at the front desk, who could not have been more helpful and lovely. Chef Christian was also great and wonderful with sharing his recipes and his cooking skills. I came across a couple of fellow travellers staying at different hostels in the city and it was a very different experience for them (negative). Great place to stay and I would highly recommend. Recently stayed at Los Patios during my time in Medellin and I have to say I had a great experience. The staff is warm and welcoming, the facility is well maintained, and they arraigned activities and tours during the week to help keep you busy and engaged. While I stayed in a private room, I was still able to meet other travelers from around the world which made the experience unforgettable. A HUGE THANK YOU to David, the bartender, for assisting me getting my phone back after it fell onto a nearby rooftop, you’re a lifesaver and one of the best parts of this hostel! Overall I would highly recommend this hostel to someone looking for ways to meet other solo travelers, while also offering a safe and fun place to stay when visiting. 5/5!

Awestruck 👍 Literally the best Hostel experience I've had. Juliana at Front Desk was very kind Always, just lovely & suggested fun events & things to do. I promised her a review & here it goes. Christian (one of the hosts) is very passionate in meeting travelers & teaching cooking & hosting Fun events like a Ping-pong Tournament I joined. Neighborhood is really Chill, local yet layback. Salsa & Bachata classes, cultural Dance presentations, Party Bus, you name it. The whole Team strikes for a Home Run! 🤯 Definitely would stay again.

I had a great week solo stay here. It was social, and had so many activities (fruit tasting, dance, soccer, rooftop events, etc!) which were amazing. You can book tours via this hostel as well which was so convenient. A wonderful place to spend a solo trip and meet others / have lots to do! Good location in Poblado. I had a private room with balcony which was great. There is noise around, so be mindful of that if you’re a light sleeper. The WiFi in my room on the 5th floor was not reliable, but the wifi worked well on the main floor. There are coworking spaces and a common kitchen as well as a cafe downstairs. Staff is so incredibly nice and helpful. It was mainly a European crowd when I stayed! I did the coffee tour, guatape tour, comuna 13 tour, soccer match trip, and downtown walking tour. All were fantastic!

Quick guide to what's good & bad: I was going to check out & move to another hostel, not because it was bad here, but it just wasn't my vibe (sometimes it just depends on who you meet) & it's expensive relative to other hostels. The mixed dorms are also quite small. Obviously this often depends on who you meet, which is random. But I changed my mind. And wanted to re-book and extend for a few more days, but it was booked out :(. Why? The staff they employ here are really amazing, accommodating, cheerful, happy to help - really everyone at the front desk I interacted with. Then there was this guy running the cooking classes they have, called Chris. He was incredible. So passionate about cooking & teaching us, with great English. I signed up to this class just 'meh' because, but glad I did because I got so much out of it and after this I really wanted to extend my booking for a few more days. They really seem to get the staff part of the business equation right here, and I think that makes it worth paying up for this hostel.

I had an amazing stay at this hostel! The staff were incredibly friendly and always made me feel right at home. Huge shoutout to Juliana, Sara, Sofia, Don Cesar, Carlos, Fernando, and many others whose names I’m forgetting—everyone was wonderful. Trust me, if you stay here, you’re guaranteed to have a great time.
