Large menu with creative choices. Service was fantastic. I had to try their version of Chiles en Nogada which was the best I’ve had. They had a large choice of Mexican beer. Couldn’t have been better and was reasonably priced.

Unfriendly waitress not smiling, said nothing and stood there after grabbing 2 menus. I had to say “two please.” Should have turned around right then and there. I Notice she was friendly, greeting people and smiling to others after us. We’re not her kind of brown I guess. Ordered Chile relleno stuffed with shrimp. What came out was not what I’m used to calling “Chile rellenos”. I knew it was going to be the bigger green poblano, but it did not have the egg coating. Maybe it’s the egg shortage and I brought it up to the unfriendly waitress and she said they only put cheese on top. So it was unseasoned plain rubbery shrimp, covered by a poblano pepper, melted cheese and watery tasteless red sauce. The corn in the rice was old. It was also served with broccoli with sautéed mushrooms which was different. Sounds like a variety of things but there was no flavor. No garlic, butter, no onions. It took so long that my tortillas were no longer warm. Other people seated after us got their food before us. Unsatisfying to my pallet and wallet. Won’t return and we were debating on where to go for lunch since we’re from out of town. My daughter liked her ceviche, but states it didn’t have to cost that much- $21.00. Which is true. Gave our Saturday in Santa Fe a bad taste and feeling. Don’t go here.

As soon as I walked in I could tell this place was going to be interesting. The theme inside is horses. They have some incredible horse murals on the walls, wooden chairs with carved horses, and saddles. The menu is quite extensive and has a nice selection to choose from. We ordered the mole plate, four taco plate, shrimp soup, and Caldo de Res. Portions were huge and the quality and flavors were amazing. Service was excellent. Easy review… five stars for sure.

Google
One of my favorite Santa Fe spots, and my favorite place to get Mexican food in the city. Huge menu - there's something for everyone. Ribs, stuffed peppers, delicious sauces... very filling and tasty. I haven't had anything spicy here - flavors are often sweet. And they have great fresh tortillas. They are very family friendly, and even with two babies crawling around a busy restaurant I felt welcome.

Google
I had the rellenos de pollos and it was delicious. Not very spicy which I was happy about. My husband had the burrito plate and really enjoyed the green sauce. Wait staff was very friendly. Good location and plenty of parking on a Tuesday.

We came in on a rainy day after Meow Wolf, and it was so cozy, and the food was so homey. Service was excellent. My husband got the Gorditas Zacatecas and I got the Tamal de Cazuela. Both were delicious. The Tamal was to die for. Creamy, filling and comforting. I ordered the piña aquas frescas and it was so delicious. Highly recommend this place!!

My wife and I took a trip to Santa Fe, and spent the majority of our time on the Square in downtown. One afternoon, we happened to stop by this restaurant, a few miles south of downtown. We were simply hungry and looking for a generic, quick experience, before heading back downtown. Let me tell you what, our experience was top notch at Los Potrillos. From the moment we sat down, we had incredible service, with exceptionally fast response times for drink and food orders. The service was great, the food was good, and the overall experience was surprisingly excellent. Highly recommend this place!

We ate here on a snowy Thursday evening. All of our meals were delicious. They accommodated one of my very picky eaters and I’m so grateful for that. Our servers were very attentive and the food came out very fast. The fajitas were some of the best we’ve had. The tortillas, chips & salsa were all fresh as well. We will definitely return when we come back to Santa Fe.

Yelp
ice cold brew and chicken enchilada. One of our favorite places fast and friendly service.

Lecia C.

Yelp
Stopped in here last night while driving through town. We were hungry for Mexican food and the reviews were good. We were seated right away and the service was fast and friendly. The chips and salsa were ok. The green salsa was tasty but the red sauce was overly chipotle flavored. I had Enchiladas de Colores and hubby had shredded beef tacos. The enchiladas were too salty to eat and hubby switched with me. The tacos were tastier.

Yelp
A hidden gem with authentic decor, excellent food, and the fastest service I've experienced in a long time. I ordered the enchiladas suizas, which were just the way I like them, with grilled chicken and a lovely tomatillo/jalapeño sauce. Tjefrozen mango margarita hit the spot after a day on the road. Will be back!

Yelp
Loved my meal at Los Potrillos! We were quickly seated and served chips and salsa. The salsas could have been a bit spicier (personal preference) but the flavor was great! Smoky green and red salsas were yummy. I ordered the Gorditas Zacatecas (1 beef, 1 chicken, and 1 rajas con queso). My favorite was the rajas con queso! It was so cheesy, and the gordita breading had great texture and flavor. I ate the gorditas with the leftover salsa we had from the chips. The plate honestly doesn't look like that much food, but I was STUFFED afterwards. I definitely want to try more of the dishes they have on the menu! I'm excited to visit again.

Yelp
We love this restaurant. It has a nice family run vibe. I love that it's out of the touristy area of Santa Fe. The menu is huge and the food is very authentic and delicious. The waitstaff is attentive but they don't hover. Oh and the margaritas are really good. *Try the chicharoni appetizer yum.

Yelp
A hidden gem. Friends took us here and I was pleasantly surprised! I had passed their sign on Cerrillos many times and didn't as much as blink an eye. But after stopping in, it's a great spot for yummy Mexican food with large portions! We ate and were full with still half the food we ordered! The horchata is delicious with free refills! Big enough to share. I also got their carne asada tostadas which were stacked high with all the goods! A yummy little spot.

Stephanie K.

Yelp
Only every dive take out here but everything is really well done and always fresh and hot when we pick it up. Looking around the dining room is clean and seems like they have some very fun cocktails on the menu.

Amy W.

Yelp
This is a restaurant full of LOCALS! For good reason - great staff, huge menu, huge servings of authentic Mexican food, reasonable prices. Unpretentious and comfortable. Always a good choice. (Except Wednesday, they're closed on Wednesday.) Seriously - super yummy food and great service. Check it out.

Yelp
We enjoyed this restaurant that was able to promptly seat us, supply us with chips and a couple sauces and get our orders in. My friend wanted me to try the chiles en nogado. It is a dish that not every mexican restaurant has. This version had unbreaded poblano peppers stuffed with a savory/sweet meat mixture and then topped with a creamy sauce, garnished with pomegranate seeds and parsley. It was rich and delicious. We also had the tamales de cazuela which was like a creamy corn soup with tortillas, chicken and cheese. Both were delicious and the restaurant's service was attentive.

Nathan M.

Yelp
Los Potrillos is a Mexican food restaurant that offers a huge menu of options, so you can certainly find something you like here. My wife and I ate here on our last night in Santa Fe and are really glad we did. The restaurant decor and vibe is of a horse ranch and is filled with locals versus the more tourist driven downtown restaurants. I ordered a frozen mango margarita that was rim lined with chilli powder. Delicious! It reminded me of the Mexican Vero Mango, which is a mango flavored lollipop covered in chili powder. Only this one was frozen and with tequila!!! My wife ordered cheese enchiladas with Verde sauce and I had Chicken Rellenos. If you are from out of town, Rellenos in this area are often not battered and deep fried. So the Rellenos are basically stuffed poblano peppers. They were very good. My wife also really enjoyed the enchiladas. The service was fast and efficient from taking our order, bringing our food, and closing out the bill. We would definitely go here again.

Yelp
Molcajete! Get it! Nice vibes. Authentic food! Busy but usually no wait. Open on Sundays.

Yelp
To culminate our first full day in scenic Santa Fe, our oldest brother and his lovely wife treated my brother and I to their favorite New Mexican style restaurant. Los Portrillos may be named for the foals, or baby horses, that line their lobby walls, but for the ingenuity and culinary craftsmanship shown in their show stopping specialties this place may as well be named after the greatest horse to ever race- Secretariat! Our trio of brothers contented ourselves with stiff margaritas and a trio of entrees pulled straight from the Chef's Specialties: Enchiladas Del Colores, Pechuga de Pollo en Nuez and my Gorditas de Zacatecas. The first featured the Christmas (red and green) salsas that all self-respecting New Mexican restaurants employ. Number two positively sang with an inventive savory-sweet sauce gleaned from walnuts. And the latter stuffed three chubby gorditas with chicken, cheese and shredded beef. But our momentary delight almost derailed when my sister in law's dish arrived. Mayra had ordered the Chiles de Nogada, and it swiftly had us three brothers gnashing our teeth in culinary covetedness! Imagine plump chiles poblanos blanketed with a novel sauce comprised of ground beef, pecans and raisins?! Combine the licking-our-plates fervor with stout, generously poured drinks and efficient service and a festive crowd that doesn't mind waiting because they KNOW they're about to go on a true culinary odyssey. Aboard the Secretariat of Santa Fe New Mexican cuisine.

Yelp
Los Portillo's is always excellent! The authentic Mexican food here is very good - it's always busy with locals and the service is good too,The prices are affordable and the restaurant is traditional Mexican with the carved wood chairs and murals - we go there or order out often

Jeramie D.

Yelp
I don't recommend this place service was amazing but the food was disgusting!! we ordered the shrimp cocktail which tastes like sauce out of a can.

Karen B.

Yelp
Food and service were very good. Margaritas were also very good. Great place to eat if you go to Meow Wolf.

Gennie A.

Yelp
I took my husband there for Fathers Day and we were very pleased. We ordered Menudo and Posole and both were excellent. I also ordered a "tamal de cazuela" which I took home and loved the next day. Great service and authentic offerings and ingredients.

Kathy B.

Yelp
Best Mexican food this side of the Rio Grande. Prices are reasonable and the servers attentive. I suspect most patrons are locals - it had a homey atmosphere We just selected it randomly and we were so glad we did.

Angie D.

Yelp
Good service and ambiance was great. Just a little annoyed but the consistent chopped behind us. Other than that I would go again just not sit right there

Christina M.

Yelp
We happen to be at the Farmers Market and we were chatting with a vendor about good restaurants and they suggested Los Potrillos, so we decided to give it a try for lunch. Everyone ordered a dish and we shared it family style so we could try allll the things. Every single dish was fantastic, we were blown away. Dished we ordered were the Tamal en la Cazuela, Chiles Nogada, Chicken Mole, Enchiladas Suizas and the Al pastor mocajete... so much better interesting variety and delicious flavors, everything was fantastic! Highlights were the charro beans, mocajete and the Chile nogadas. Everything was so good we decided to ordered takeout 2 days later for dinner LOL that time we ordered the Chicken Soup, the ribs and chicken fajitas and the mole enchiladas, dang so good! FYI:The service was great, food was prepared quickly and the parking is super easy. If your in the Sante Fe area you've got to try Los Potrillos for a meal you wont be disappointed!

Vanessa L.

Yelp
We travel from Rio Rancho just to eat here!!! The food is always amazing and the service is always top notch!!!! I always recommend the food here!

David F.

Yelp
The best Mexican Mexican food in New Mexico. My son got the shrimp enchiladas and I got another shrimp dish (don't want to butcher the spelling) the tortillas are perfect. We will come back.

Emma G.

Yelp
Such a hidden gem in Santa Fe! The best place to get authentic Mexican food! I've been here many times over the past two years since I tried it and they NEVER disappoint! From the queso fundido, the ceviche tostadas, the aguacate rellenos, the Gorditas, the pechuga con mango- just a few of my faves! Also love their mango margarita! The service was great and my waiter Hector is also PHENOMENAL

Marvin P.

Yelp
Love this place. Been coming for about 10 years, excellent food and love the chips and salsas

Jeff V.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Service was excellent. Food arrived very quickly from when order was placed. Ambience was as expected.

Isobel P.

Yelp
We came here after Meow Wolf for dinner and were not disappointed! Being from California, I wanted to try Mexican food from a different region since it's so different depending on where you are. We were blown away by the flavors! We ordered the Chile Relleno en Nogada dish after hearing so many stellar reviews about their Chile Relleno. There are different types you can order and we opted for the Nogada style--the sauce and filling has walnuts and raisins, making it very sweet. It comes with veggies and rice. SO delicious. True comfort food and very generous portions. We also ordered the Tamal de Cazuela, which was completely new to us. It is a thick corn chowder with pieces of chicken and beans/rice on the side. We were impressed! Amazingly silky and creamy, with a delicious corn flavor and texture! It was a departure from the Mexican food that I'm used to and so yummy. Chips and salsa (complimentary) were tasty too. However, we didn't love the margarita ($7) which I found a bit too sweet and strong enough. Overall, an awesome experience!

Lauren H.

Yelp
This place was really great! Chips and salsa were delicious as a starter. My sister ordered a chicken quesadilla and she ate it so fast I didn't have a chance to take a photo. I ordered shredded steak tacos that were delicious, but the steak and the rice on the side were slightly salty. My boyfriend ate all of his chicken fajitas. Overall, great place!

Stephen F.

Yelp
Good authentic Mexican food for a good price. Most of the places in town are Americanized or too Yuppie for us. This was great. Good service, authentic food, nice selection.

Flor D.

Yelp
Just stopped for a nice caldo in a cold day. It was the best decision to stop at this local Restaurant. I am in town for work but will definitely be back. Everything was so delicious. This place made me feel like back home in Mexico. The service was also great, authentic Mexican food, at a great price with a lot of flavor. They have natural aguas frescas too .

Susan G.

Yelp
Every time I drive by this place there's cars in the parking lot so you know it's got to be good. My friend and I stopped in for dinner he had the chicken Mole and I had the Chile En Nogada. Absolutely delicious. The chicken was more like a guisada I thought but the flavors were delicious. The Chile en Nogada was one of the best meals I have ever eaten. Unexpected flavors sweet and savory all at once. Not New Mexican food. MEXICAN FOOD. Try it you wont regret it. Great friendly service and happy patrons. Big families eating happily you know its good

Gloria H.

Yelp
Excellent food and service!! Fail on the margaritas. If you operate a Mexican restaurant and serve liquor, have some pride.

Isadora K.

Yelp
Hell yes, just go right now. The menu here is unique, portions are huge, good value, nice service. Delicious!

Rod F.

Yelp
I went here today with some co-workers. One of them told me that this Mexican restaurant is an old Mexico, Mexican food restaurant. So it was great to try this as I've not had that cuisine before. The first thing that struck me was the salsa for the chips. There were 3 types, mild and moderately hot, but the fun one was based upon guacamole salsa! Never have I heard of guacamole salsa!! Awesome! My colleagues recommended the fajitas, so I went with what the menu called the Mixed Fajitas, which includes both beef and chicken. WOW!!! Was that fantastic!! The tastes were nothing like I've had at other Mexican restaurants! In one move, I'm sold on old Mexican food. The accompanying beans were pureed, which I've never had before. There was rice with corn, more of their guacamole and sour cream. What impressed me, besides the wonderful taste of the fajita, was the inclusion of lots of green, red and orange peppers! So much food, I had to take half of it back to the office! I am very definitely returning here as soon as possible and try other dishes!

Josh R.

Yelp
Los Potrillos was suggest when a friend and I were in Santa Fe looking at a truck. Had a few hours we needed to spend while a repair was done. Started out with a house margarita which was a very good margarita for a house one. Buddy had a mango frozen margarita which was a little sweat for me. The burrito de asada al carbon was amazing the shredded beef had so much flavor! Never would have stopped in just driving by however that is the awesome thing about local recommendations and small home town place. Buddy had carne asada served tradition he was shocked it came with a baked potato. Once again the spice and flavor of the steak was amazing. Santa Fe has the square which gets crazy busy and is touristville with tourist pricing. Would much rather come here than deal with the square traffic and pricing.

Tena C.

Yelp
This location was on the busy roadway that bisects town. They were not too busy and had a few tables that were interested in the soccer game on the TV. The menu was very large and took us a bit to choose what we wanted. There were several staff members that helped serve our table, which was great because our waiter took our order and then pretty much ignored us after that. The decor was fun New Mexican themed with cool wood carved chairs for the table seating area. There were murals on the walls as well. I ordered the Tamal de Cazuela thinking it was a shallow plate with a tortilla covered in creamy chicken corn sauce based on the menu description. It turned out to be a deeper bowl with a corn tortilla on the bottom. This made it very difficult to eat and it was way more food than I really needed. There are so many places to choose from with this type of cuisine so I likely won't be back soon.

Michelle M.

Yelp
Visiting Santa Fe and this restaurant was minutes away from our Airbnb. Pretty decent reviews and menu looked packed, so decided to try. I give a 4.5 Stars-Service was a tad slow but the food was so good it made up for it. Chips are decent(not too hard or stale), salsa hot and flavorful, do wish they had a green salsa. I ordered the Mojachete Al Pastor, my husband the Pollo en Salsa Verde, and my kids shared enchiladas with the three different kinds. Again, everything was delicious, spicy level perfect, plus can't beat homemade tortillas! Will definitely recommend and come back when I'm in town.

Mazdarx7 F.

Yelp
First time and last time unfortunately when me and my family came we were treated well. The wait was a bit long. My plate came out little cold. I order 2 orders of tortillas and took them a while to bring my second set. They had minimal non alcoholic drinks. They said they had horchata and I was craving that. No dr. Pepper smh. Over all their servers were not attentive to parts of the table. The lemonade was kind of plain.

Greg B.

Yelp
Local place with authentic Mexican food, good portions, and friendly service. Corn tortillas tasted home-made.

Doreen L.

Yelp
Los Potrillos was this amazing Mexican restaurant in Santa Fe. The food portions were enormous, the food quality was very good but a little inconsistent and the service was great! We came here for a dinner after a long hike in the tent rocks. We were very hungry. Since Los Potrillos is a popular restaurant with many regulars, we crowded around the entrance. The wait was around 30 minutes. The dining room is filled with cowboyish material: chaps on the walls, a saddle, etc. The chair backings are carved wooden horses. Drinks such as margaritas and beer were served in head-sized glasses. We ordered the queso fundido, the cocktail de campechano (shrimp and octopus cocktail) to share. For entrees: Chile Rellenos de camaron, molcajete al pastor, lamb stew and Barbeque ribs. The queso fundido comes with a protein, and we choose chorizo. It was gooey cheesy and the bits of fatty spiced chorizo was amazing! The shrimp and octopus cocktail was okay. The shrimps and octopus for tiny and the sauce covering it was thin tomato sauce. You can skip this. The Chile renellos was wonderful! This dish was soft sweet stuffed Chile's, oozing with cheese and small flavorful shrimps. Then its topped with cheesy savory sauce. It came with a side of steamed vegetables and rice with beans. Molcajete al pastor was chopped bits of marinated pork in a hot cast iron bowl with seared pineapple slice. As if this was not enough food, there was a tiny bowl filled with Vienna hot dogs, beans and soup. Then there was a salad of pineapples jalapenos and shredded lettuce and tomatoes. And a small pile of shredded lettuce and carrots. The BBQ ribs were smoky sweet and very hearty. The lamb stew was filled with shredded lamb and a tomato based soup. There was so much lamb, our friend shared with the three of us and still could not finish the soup. Actually no one finished any of their dishes and we took lots and lots of leftovers home. The coffee was also a little burnt. You can avoid getting coffee here. I loved this place. Definitely come by for a hearty meal. And split your entree with another person.

Sharon C.

Yelp
Lamb birria is soso yummy !!! Roasted salsa very tasty. Fundido with poblanos is the best. Wait staff top notch.

Kathryn G.

Yelp
Great food, service and one of my favorite places for tasty Mexican food. Highly recommend!

Opal D.

Yelp
My husband hated the chile rellenos and the queso fundido arrived congealed into a mass you need to cut with a knife. Heavy cilantro in the guacamole, which isn't for everyone. I liked the Mi Capitan entree.

J B.

Yelp
This is an amazing restaurant ! Great Food and Prices ! A family owned restaurant with owner on site. The waitresses work to please and they all checked on the table to make sure everything was right. We had Roxanna and she could not have done a better job. We will be back !

Rumpelstilzchen I.

Yelp
This has to be the worst restaurant in Santa Fe that you would think would be amazing. Great interior, great overall look, bit horrendous food. When you hear teenagers at the next table over commenting that "this is the worst Mexican food I've ever had", you know you're in trouble. Service was friendly, food was horrible. From the waitress who misunderstood that we wanted frozen margaritas, and gave us the most awful sweet Walmart mix you've ever tasted, to the horrendous "queso", to the bland, dry meal, to the $100 bill -- I'm very sorry but this place is terrible. AVOID.

Betcy W.

Yelp
Great authentic Mexican restaurant! I liked the selection on the menu because it was very authentic like the Birria plate that comes with the tortillas and the trimmings. I did end up ordering a side of rice and refried beans and I probably could have done without it. The portion of Birria alone was sufficient. Staff was very friendly and the chips and salsa were excellent! Make sure to order the horchata it was bomb!

Chebo C.

Yelp
This was my first time eating at this restaurant. I was born and raised here, but have been gone for over 40 years. This place is a short walk from my current house. The atmosphere is acceptable, but too many cositas on the walls. The burlap curtains look ratty and only serve as dust collectors. Interior is on the dark side with low dark ceilings. Bathroom was clean enough, but floor was sticky. Food was flavorful, but not my favorite. I had Huevos Rancheros. They use a tomatillo sauce instead of red or green chile. I ordered a side of red chile - also not spiced New Mexican style. Tasty, but I have had much better. Service was adequate overall. There are much better choices for my taste which is New Mexican cuisine.

Wyona B.

Yelp
Customer service was crap.... Didn't get our order correct, also was out of all the drinks. Never received our oysters and guacamole. Would not recommend coming here.

Len G.

Yelp
Los Potrillos was recommended to us by a local. The staff were friendly and accommodating. I was interested in the molé. They brought a sample and after tasting it, I was immediately convinced to get the enchiladas molé. I highly recommend this restaurant when visiting Santa Fe!

Lex W.

Yelp
Probably in my top three restaurants in Santa Fe. We've tried so many different dishes, and they're all so good, it's hard to pick a favorite. That being said, I pretty much always order the Tamal de Cazeula, which is kind of a creamy corn soup layered with tortillas, chicken, and cheese. Unbelievably good. I'm a sucker for good chile rellenos, and the Chile Rellenos Dona Maria are great if you want the type that are stuffed with cheese and covered in a tomato based sauce. Or if you're feeling adventurous, try the Chiles en Nogada, which are stuffed with ground beef, raisins, and pecans and covered in a cream sauce. Other favorites: The Enchiladas Suizas (chicken enchiladas in a jalapeno tomatillo sauce) and Enchiladas Huevonas (chicken and cheese enchiladas in a mole sauce) are delicious. Probably the best mole I've ever had. Every time I try something new, I end up with a new favorite dish. And the menu is HUGE, so you're pretty much guaranteed to find something to please any palate. The staff are always very friendly and service is fast. Takeout orders have always been ready in 10-15 minutes.

Eliseo R.

Yelp
Service was good except for the the fact that they did not mention the ceviche comes with mayonnaise. I know some people in Mexico eat it like this but it didn't say it on the menu and the waiter did not mention it. Hate sending food back so I ate it as is. They could have said something some people are allergic to eggs and could have a reaction eating this being unaware. They don't add hot souce for you so why would they add mayo without letting you know.
