9 Best Places to Visit in Costa Rica in 2025

"My favorite hostel in Santa Teresa, Lost Boyz is a chill and social eco-friendly hostel with an on-site bar, a restaurant serving wood-fired pizza, and a pool, located near the beach — a fun place to relax and meet people." - Matthew Kepnes

It's a cheap hostel don't expect much. Bring towels or pay $3. No locked place for your valuables. There was very bad lighting you have to use your flashlight even when the light is on in the room. They had tiny cubbies with no locks and 1 outlet in the room. There was an extender for the outlet but not all of them worked. Breakfast is a pancake with fruit, and 2 people who arrived after me were served before I was. There were even people who had already gotten breakfast who got a second breakfast before me. But it's a chill vibe if you don't mind any of that.

I stayed in a nomad dorm and it was great. Staff are fabulous. I truely became a lost girl here and would like to get lost again. Thanks. Also, woke up to howler monkeys most morning and you’ll most likely catch a glimpse of them whilst here. AND THE CUTE RED SQUIRRELS.

I spent a total of 6 weeks at Lost Boyz Hostel, specifically in the Nomads dorm with 6 beds, and I had an amazing time. What truly sets this hostel apart are the people, especially the staff on-site. They are not just friendly, helpful, and in good spirits; they genuinely care about the guests. Whether it was sharing meals together at the hostel table, giving a quick ride to the ATM, assisting with phone repairs, translating emails, or arranging spontaneous shuttles, Santiago, Jesus, Cesar, Ian, and Matteo are simply fantastic. They are undoubtedly the reason I ended up staying at this hostel for so long, and it felt like home. Apart from the exceptional staff, the hostel itself is well-maintained, boasts a great pool, and includes breakfast (which is quite significant, especially considering the prices in Santa Teresa). Matteo, the hostel manager, is always open to feedback and goes above and beyond to address any reasonable concerns or suggestions (missing spoons were back in stock in a matter of hours :-D ). The hostel's location is also excellent; it's close to the main beach entrance (next to eat streets) and conveniently near surf and ATV shops (like Extreme Surf Center), the "Ronnie's" supermarket, and a laundry service. Regarding the atmosphere, most of the rooms do not have AC, but the beds typically come with their own fans. The layout of the house is very open, almost like sharing a massive house with friends. During the weeks I was there (off-season), it was fantastic. I can't speak to the noise levels during the high season, but the security was quite strict after 11 PM :-D. In summary, Lost Boyz Hostel offers a welcoming and warm family-like atmosphere, thanks to its exceptional staff members, and I can highly recommend it. I already miss you guys!

Lost Boyz is a fantastic experience. The property has amazing spaces to relax, meet people, and party by the pool. The studio room provide a comfortable stay with AC so you can get away from the heat at night. The staff is friendly, kind, and offers great suggestions for places to visit during your stay. I would recommend Lost Boyz for anyone visiting Santa Teresa.

Very nice staff and location is great. Rooms are pretty clean too. Maybe the furniture near the pool area would need a little bit of love.

We stayed in lost boys for nine nights and absolutely loved this place. We stayed in a private cabin, which was perfect. The fan is super powerful for those hot, sticky nights, the room is huge (and we can certainly spread out!), and the attached bathroom is half open so you’re undercover but enjoying the open Costa Rican air. They’ve thought of everything, from bedside lights to rope clotheslines under the roof eves in the bathroom for swimmers and towels to dry. The kitchen is huge and the three fridges mean there’s always space. There’s only two burners and no toaster (because people keep breaking them) so it can be a bit of a squish in the kitchen but just need a bit of patience. The staff really make this place! The part owner, Dennis, is such a delight and we were incredibly sad to leave him. He has so much knowledge about the area that he shares so freely and is a joy to be around. Matteo is such a fun and friendly dude and can always build a good bar vibe. The bar also closes at 11pm, and if you want you can go party elsewhere. This was a great combo of everyone drinking together and then going out, but people who wanted to sleep absolutely could. We went in the wet season, so the kitchen was closed except for breakfast, and the bar is mostly closed (they have beers and basic spirits but aren’t running a full menu). This is totally understandable with the seasons but something to just be aware of, although there are plenty of food places nearby. There’s a lot of comments about the breakfast but wet season may be a bit different- it alternates between a bowl of fruit and a traditional Costa Rican breakfast (rice and beans, a fried egg, and plantain), with a bowl of fruit and a crepe on Sundays. We found we needed to supplement the breakfast but gets you started. We had a great stay, watching monkies in the trees from the pool (which is a great pool- always in shade and many different levels to lounge on in the water), and watching iguanas jump out of the trees and on to the roof of the bar. Absolutely loved this place and would 100% go back.

I love the place. BUT none of the rooms has AC. I stood at a 6 bed dorm that had just one ceiling fan. Therefore it was really hot during day and night. Adding to that, the room is open, which means that you have to use mosquito spray at night to avoid being completely bitten. I talked to other travelers who weren't as bothered by that as I was... The place itself is really nice (pool, community areas, treehouse, ...) and the staff was awesome. So if you're not a really sensitive sleeper you should give the place a chance!

Highly recommend going to this hostel when in Santa Teresa. The hostel is like a little jungle, the staff/ volunteers are super nice and helpful and this place is great for solo travelers. Also breakfast is included and they have changing breakfast! Loved my stay!
